Young Iranians want regime change<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Last November,\u00a0<\/span>the Iranian regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei ordered the Revolutionary Guard\u00a0<\/a><\/span>(IRGC)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to \u201cdo whatever it takes\u201d to end the nationwide protests that sprang up spontaneously after Tehran announced sudden hikes in the government-set price of gasoline. The result was a series of mass shootings across dozens of Iranian cities. After only a few days of IRGC attacks on public protests,\u00a0<\/span>the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a> announced\u00a0<\/span>that 1,500<\/a><\/span>\u00a0people lay dead<\/a> from gunshot wounds. Others survived shootings but can be expected to suffer permanent effects after arresting authorities prevented them from receiving medical treatment. What\u2019s more, some of the thousands of arrestees are still facing possible capital punishment, so the ultimate death toll remains to be determined.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This bloodshed shows the regime\u2019s brutality and its utter fear of people\u2019s uprising that rattled its foundations in November<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In fact, mullahs have always used violence to quell the restive Iranian society<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0crackdown on\u00a0<\/span>2019 uprising<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>or<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>its brutality during the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>previous nationwide uprising in January 2018,\u00a0<\/span>were not the only examples of the regime\u2019s brutality<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Another example is t<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a01988 massacre of political prisoners<\/a>, which saw\u00a0<\/span>over<\/span>\u00a030,000\u00a0<\/span>individuals,<\/span>\u00a0mostly MEK supporters and members,\u00a0<\/span>condemned to the gallows for the crime of opposing\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0theocratic dictatorship and advocating for a democratic system in its place<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That was ultimately the message of the two recent uprisings, as well. <\/span>Although\u00a0<\/span>both\u00a0<\/span>triggered<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>by the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>economic hardship brought on by the regime\u2019s mismanagement and self-serving policies. This was reflected in protesters\u2019 slogans that were widely repeated among the 150 participating cities in the first uprising, and 200 in the second. Iranians from various ethnic, geographic, and economic backgrounds were heard to chants \u201cforget about Syria; think of us,\u201d\u00a0in an effort to\u00a0highlight the regime\u2019s wasteful spending on foreign adventurism at a time when the Iranian people were suffering terribly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Protesters also expressly condemned both factions\u00a0<\/span>the regime<\/span>, making it clear that they saw no pushback against these misplaced priorities coming from either Khamenei\u2019s \u201chardliners\u201d or the \u201creformists\u201d associated with\u00a0<\/span>regime\u00a0<\/span>President Hassan Rouhani. The apparent demand for an outside alternative lent additional credence to some of Khamenei\u2019s own statements about the uprisings. In January 2018, he declared that the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian\u00a0<\/span>opposition group, the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran<\/span>\u00a0(MEK)<\/span>, had planned for month to bring the protests into the open. The\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span>\u00a0has long advocated for a transitional government led by\u00a0<\/span>the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), which is in fact a government in-<\/span>exile, in<\/span>\u00a0advance of Iran\u2019s first truly free elections.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This in turn helps to explain why Khamenei was so eager to order his\u00a0<\/span>thugs<\/span>\u00a0to \u201cdo whatever it takes\u201d to crush the uprising when it re-emerged last November. The\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span>\u00a0has maintained its role as the leading voice for Iranian democracy since the\u00a0<\/span>early<\/span>\u00a0days of\u00a0<\/span>the mullahs\u2019 regime\u00a0<\/span>hijacking the 1979 anti-monarchic revolution<\/span>. Accordingly, it became the main target of the 1988 massacre and has\u00a0<\/span>sacrificed over 120,000 of its members and supporters\u00a0<\/span>for the cause of freedom.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Notably, though, the\u00a0<\/span>crackdowns have not halted the\u00a0<\/span>MEK\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0efforts to facilitate popular overthrow of the mullahs\u2019 regime. And the two uprisings, coming less than two years apart, suggest that these efforts have been\u00a0<\/span>efficient<\/span>. They also suggest that the Iranian people as a\u00a0<\/span>whole are prone to the same sort of resilience that allowed the PMOI itself to weather the lion\u2019s share of 30,000 hangings, plus subsequent assassinations, and come out the other side as strong as ever.<\/span>\u00a0In addition to\u00a0<\/span>playing a\u00a0<\/span>leading\u00a0<\/span>role during the nationwide Iran\u00a0<\/span>during recent years, the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian Resistance<\/span>\u00a0has developed a substantial international presence, and leading an annual rally and conference in the summer which attracts tens of thousands of Iranians, plus hundreds of political dignitaries, from throughout the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The collective resistance of the public and the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span>\u00a0was tested after January 2018, when dozens of participants in that month\u2019s protest were killed, some of them under torture. They passed the test with flying colors when the sequel to that uprising proved to be even more widespread and even more forthright in its message of regime change.\u00a0<\/span>Now, even<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s officials and media acknowledge the Iranian society\u2019s restiveness and the MEK\u2019s role and potential in guiding people\u00a0<\/span>toward freedom<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Several recent editorials in Iranian state news outlets have highlighted the\u00a0<\/span>near inevitability<\/span>\u00a0of another uprising being modeled after the recent two. The state-run daily newspaper Etemad, for instance, quoted one regime official as saying that Iranian society is currently in a state whereby \u201cany dissatisfaction quickly turns into social protest.\u201d Another daily,\u00a0<\/span>Asre<\/span>\u00a0Iran, said that\u00a0<\/span>as long as<\/span>\u00a0the status quo persists and conditions for ordinary Iranians continue to worsen, these protests will \u201chave the ability to evolve\u201d into overthrow of the ruling system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These<\/span>\u00a0and other state media outlets, as well as some\u00a0<\/span>of the regime\u2019s officials<\/span>, have begun urging the regime to undertake serious reform initiatives, in hopes of alleviating a bit of the public outrage.\u00a0<\/span>But the Iranian people have rejected these deceptive actions by chanting \u201chardliner, reformist, the game is over”<\/a>. In addition, the mullahs\u2019 regime is not capable of <\/span>changing its behavior.<\/span>\u00a0It is not as though the supreme leader was unaware of the severity of the outrage when he ordered the IRGC to put it down by any means necessary.\u00a0<\/span>He deliberately prioritized the repression of dissent over any compassionate response to the people\u2019s suffering, and he will most likely do it again whenever another uprising emerges.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the Iranian Resistance has said, mullahs will continue human rights violations until the very last days of their survival.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Any compromise on the regime\u2019s current, self-serving priorities would be tantamount to the abdication of power. For this reason, the only legitimate means of alleviating the Iranian people\u2019s suffering is\u00a0<\/span>by overthrowing this regime<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The Iranian resistance and its members and supporters have and will always paid the price of\u00a0<\/span>the struggle for freedom. The Iranian regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0worst repressive measures fail to outpace the hardship associated with a system that has left about 80 percent of the Iranian population living beneath the poverty line, while the mullahs enrich themselves and strive to extend their power beyond their nation\u2019s borders.<\/span><\/p>\n
