The Iranian regime executed <\/span>a woman and <\/span>three<\/span> men on Tuesday. Previously,<\/span> on August 5,<\/span> Mostafa Salehi<\/a>, <\/span>who was <\/span>detained in <\/span>the <\/span>2018 major Iran protests was executed<\/span>. <\/span>The m<\/span>ullahs\u2019 incessant execution<\/span>s<\/span> and human rights violation<\/span>s will<\/span> continue <\/span>as long as<\/span> they enjoy impunity over 1988 <\/a><\/span>m<\/span>assacre<\/span><\/a> of political prisoners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since taking power in 1979, the Iranian regime started oppressing any dissent voice.<\/span> In other words, execution<\/span>s<\/span> in Iran <\/span>are<\/span> a political tool for the mullahs to maintain their grasp on power. The <\/span>goal of the <\/span>regime\u2019s Judiciary, unlike other countries, is to further fortify the regime\u2019s foundations<\/span>. With hundreds of detained lawyers, such as Nasrin <\/span>Sotudeh<\/span>, there is no<\/span> real <\/span>\u201cindependent lawyers center\u201d or a defense system.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite their peaceful activities, dozens of supporters of the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a><\/span> were executed between 1979 and 1981. Simultaneous with the beginning of organized resistance against the regime<\/span>, the mullahs\u2019 regime started a political purge to maintain its power and quell the restive Iranian society.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When the regime\u2019s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini, was forced to accept ceasefire with Iraq, h<\/span>is real concern was <\/span>over <\/span>the Iranian resistance movement<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s activities and a war-torn and restive society. To pacify this society, he ordered the massacre of all political prisoners, mostly members and supporters of the MEK<\/a>, who <\/span>refused to succumb to the regime\u2019s demands.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, 30,000 innocent prisoners were executed only for preserving their <\/span>ideas, despite all of them previously <\/span>being <\/span>tried by the regime\u2019s Judiciary and sentenced to prison terms. <\/span>The so-called \u201cdeath commissions,\u201d who were responsible for sending prisoners to<\/span> the<\/span> gallows simply asked one question: What is your charge? If the person said \u201cMEK<\/a>\u201d or \u201cMEK<\/span> supporter,\u201d or the word \u201c<\/span>Mojahed<\/span>\u201d his or her fate was sealed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/a>In this regard, Amnesty International<\/span> listed some of the questions by the \u201cdeath commissions\u201d on its Farsi Twitter account: <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Are you ready to condemn the “hypocrites”<\/span> [the term <\/span>the <\/span>mullahs use for<\/span> the<\/span> MEK]<\/span> and their leaders?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are you ready to step on a minefield to help the military forces of the Islamic Republic?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are you willing to join the execution squads?<\/span>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saying no to any of these questions also resulted in execution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ongoing human rights violations<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the 1988 massacre<\/a>, the regime has never stopped its human rights violations. Although the 1988 massacre is the <\/span>regime\u2019s harshest crime and the worst <\/span>massacre <\/span>of political prisoners <\/span>since World War <\/span>II<\/span>, the ongoing executions in Iran, <\/span>and brutal oppression of protests, such as killing over 1500 protesters during the major Iran protests in November 2019, indicate how <\/span>the <\/span>mullahs use execution and repression <\/span>to prolong their rule. <\/span>These events also confirm how <\/span>the <\/span>mullahs enjoy and use their impunity <\/span>o<\/span>ver <\/span>the 1988 massacre as <\/span>a <\/span>license to kill <\/span>and further brutalize the Iranian society. <\/span>In fact, many of the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre<\/a> \u2013 such as Ebrahim Raisi<\/a>, current head of the regime\u2019s Judiciary<\/span> – <\/span>hold top positions in the regime.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the 1988 massacre and <\/span>the <\/span>blood of its martyrs are never forgotten<\/span>, like the blood of slain protest<\/span>er<\/span>s in November. The regime\u2019s conceal<\/span>ment<\/span> or destroying the graves of <\/span>the martyrs of<\/span> the<\/span> 1988 massacre shows <\/span>the <\/span>mullahs\u2019 fear of the impact that this unpunished crime could have on the Iranian society.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, to end the regime\u2019s ongoing human rights violations, the world community should hold<\/span> the<\/span> mullahs to account for the 1988 massacre<\/a> and end their impunity. <\/span>This will also help the Iranian people in their quest for freedom and <\/span>democracy, because<\/span> an <\/span>end <\/span>to <\/span>the regime\u2019s human rights violations is <\/span>tantamount to <\/span>the end of the regime in its entirety.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The world community has <\/span>an <\/span>opportunity to stand with the people of Iran. <\/span>The United Nations and its members states should <\/span>take action<\/span> regarding the 1988 massacre during the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.
