The recent execution of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/navid-afkaris-execution-consequences-and-outcome-for-irans-regime\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Navid Afkar<\/a>i despite international calls to halt his death sentences, shows mullahs\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have not changed course about human rights.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>: European powers should expel the regime\u2019s ambassadors and intelligence agents from their countries shut down the mullahs\u2019 embassies, and end their trade and relations with this brutal regime.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NoImpunity4Mullahs?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NoImpunity4Mullahs<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StopExecutionsInIran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#StopExecutionsInIran<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/srl4eFr9it\">https:\/\/t.co\/srl4eFr9it<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1306265250031960067?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 16, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In December 2010, Amnesty International began issuing urgent action statements regarding the plight of seven Iranian prisoners. Each had been sentenced to death for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">having\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">connections\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with the MEK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Amnesty rightly believed that at least some of these prisoners and families of the MEK members were at imminent risk of execution following the hanging of a fellow prisoner, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/ali-saremi-political-prisoner-on-death-row-addresses-his-compatriots\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ali\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Saremi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who had been sentenced on similar grounds.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Saremi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0had previously been arrested on return from a visit to the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MEK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0community in eastern Iraq known as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/camp-ashraf-liberty\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Camp Ashraf,<\/a> where his son was a resident.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Saremi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was released in May 2007 after serving part of a one-year sentence, but sometime thereafter the authorities evidently decided to make a stronger example out of him. He was rearrested and put on trial for \u201cenmity against God\u201d through the support of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MEK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, then sentenced to death in December 2009. His execution the following year was carried out abruptly and with little warning.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Though Amnesty Internat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ional tried to warn against follow-up executions, little attention was paid to the issue by leading world powers, and two of the other prisoners were killed the very next month, also on the grounds\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of having simply visited<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Camp Ashraf.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2013,<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iran-hrm.com\/index.php\/2020\/05\/11\/political-prisoners-family-got-homelessness-after-authorities-confiscated-their-house\/#:~:text=Hassan%20Sadeghi%20served%20another%20six,four%20years%20in%20prison%20respectively.\" rel=\"noopener\"> Hassan Sadeghi<\/a> held a memorial for his father who had died in Camp Ashraf two years earlier. This most basic gesture of respect for a parent was considered\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a crime by the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">regime&#8217;s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">judiciary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Therefore, both<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> were arrested along with their two children at the memorial service. Their underage son was not released from detention for six weeks, and the parents have remained in prison ever since, serving\u00a015-year\u00a0sentences for \u201cenmity against God.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By any objective standard, this is unutterably cruel. But by the standards of the Iranian regime, the couple can be said to have gotten off easy. The sentence of enmity against God, which is applied indiscriminately to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MEK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0activists and associates, has been grounds for countless death sentences. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20932-the-1988-massacre-in-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">In the summer of 1988<\/a>, it was used as the basis for a massacre of political prisoners which primarily targeted the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MEK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and left an estimated 30,000 people dead.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ironically, though, the Iranian regime claims to also be at the head of efforts to reunite MEK members with estranged family members in their homeland. In April, an institution known as the \u201cNejat Association\u201d issued a statement that said its representatives had become \u201cwidely active in 27 provinces of the country,\u201d gathering signatures for a petition to the Albanian government, requesting visas for relatives of MEK members living in \u201cAshraf 3.\u201d But the \u201cNejat Association\u201d is a branch of Iran\u2019s Intelligence Ministry and took a leading role in the persecution of MEK members and their families in the past.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These so-called families actively participated in the psychological torture of the MEK members in Camp Ashraf Iraq with over 300 loudspeakers. Some of these \u201cfamilies\u201d threatened the residents and said they will \u201cpull out their tongues.\u201d The deadly attack on Camp Ashraf on 8 April, with 36 deaths, proved that the real mission of this demonizing campaign was paving the way for a massacre. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is simply inconceivable that the Ministry\u2019s attitude toward such people has shifted so dramatically in so short\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a period of time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. And there are certainly no other signs that anything has changed. Expressions of support for the MEK, either through speech or through financial donations, still results in capital punishment to this day. And any association whatsoever with that group may also result in severe punishment, even if that association is just a familial relationship that one has refused to disavow.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And it will almost certainly be used to punish anyone who comes forward as being related to a\u00a0 member<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the MEK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and seeks to claim one of the visas that the Intelligence Ministry is supposedly collecting in an effort to \u201crescue\u201d estranged families.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is not to say that those visas won\u2019t also serve their intended purpose. But there can be little doubt that their actual intended purpose is to facilitate infiltration of Ashraf 3<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, MEK\u2019s compound in Albania since their relocation from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Iran, by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0intelligence operatives posing as residents\u2019 relatives. This is a project that has already been underway for some\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has been exposed by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">itself<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0after they expelled persons who came under suspicion of Intelligence Ministry contacts while trying to apply for residency in Albania.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These expulsions may have prevented the Iranian regime from following through on plans to launch attacks on Ashraf 3 as they had done at the Camp Ashraf<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in Iran<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Unfortunately, though, they have not prevented international media from citing the infiltrators as \u201cformer members\u201d of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> MEK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, thus advancing the regime\u2019s longstanding effort to defame and demonize the Resistance movement in the eyes of those best suited to support it.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Particularly the Iranian yout<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">h who continue to approach the MEK as the only organized force against the regime.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meanwhile, c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ourt orders have led to the defamatory claims\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of so<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-called\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">former members<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the MEK and current members of the MOIS\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">being removed from certain publications in Europe. And reputable journalists throughout the world could take this as a cue to check the sources of their own reporting on the group,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">instead of repeating the allegations against the MEK, coming directly from Iran.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is vitally important that they do so because in the wake of two<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/iran-protests-2019-update\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> recent<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> nationwide uprisings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">emonizing the Iranian resistance will only pave the way for the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">regime to kill and arbitrary arrest MEK supporters inside Iran<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and other detained protesters by accusing them of having\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">relation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with the MEK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
