However, reports and video clips presented by the network of the Iranian resistance in various cities in Iran, as well as journalists, who managed to visit unassigned voting stations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/heshmatalavi\/2017\/05\/20\/the-outlook-of-rouhanis-second-term-as-irans-president\/#2223a7959c43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">suggest<\/a> that a large portion of the population had stayed away from ballot boxes, Jafarzadeh wrote on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/alirezajafarzadeh\/2017\/05\/31\/what-does-rouhanis-second-term-mean-n2334300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">in an opinion piece for Townhall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n<p>The campaign this year attracted greater public attention to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-resolution\/188\/cosponsors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">1988 massacre<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/middle_east\/the-nuclear-deal-takes-center-stage-as-irans-election-campaign-gets-underway\/2017\/04\/27\/2f9377d4-2a97-11e7-9081-f5405f56d3e4_story.html?utm_term=.46502ad85833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">30,000 political prisoners<\/a>, mostly members of the main Iranian opposition, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/iran-election-protests-calling-mrs-rajavi-for-president_us_591b1c08e4b03e1c81b00910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK)<\/a>. Public outrage against Rouhani\u2019s rival, Ebrahim Raisi, over his role in the massacre mounted to a point where even many powerful figures within Khamenei\u2019s faction were not prepared to support Raisi, to the Supreme Leader\u2019s dismay.<\/p>\n<p>Rouhani\u2019s first four years saw over 3,000 executions and an intense crackdown, rampaging poverty and injustice on the domestic scene; and intensifying foreign meddling and skyrocketing military\/security budgets alongside efforts to advance the regime\u2019s ballistic missile drive.<\/p>\n<p>Funds gained as a result of the nuclear agreement were used to fuel wars in the region and increase military and security spending. Rouhani\u2019s Defense Minister, Revolutionary Guards Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan, in his <a href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/en\/News\/middle-east\/2013\/11\/12\/Khamenei-s-conglomerate-thrived-as-sanctions-squeezed-Iran.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">remarks<\/a> two weeks ago, described Rouhani\u2019s tenure as \u201cthe most glorious period in development of missile and defense programs of the country in terms of both quantity and quality.\u201d He added that until March 2017 \u201ccredit guarantees for defense grew by up to 2.5 fold compared with the previous government\u201d and \u201cit will increase up to four fold by March 2018 relative to the previous government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rouhani openly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iranfocus.com\/en\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=30979:un-general-assembly-voted-overwhelmingly-condemns-human-rights-situation-in-syria&amp;catid=40&amp;Itemid=133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">boasted<\/a> in February 2016 that the regime\u2019s presence in Syria and Iraq was used as leverage to gain concessions during nuclear talks. \u201cIf our forces did not fight in Baghdad, Samarra, Fallujah and Ramadi, and if they did not help the Syrian government in Damascus and Aleppo, we would not have had any security in order to be able to conduct the [nuclear] negotiations so well,\u201d Rouhani said.<\/p>\n<p>Rouhani will likely try to present himself as the key to public problems as he has done in the past, through deceit and hollow promises. However, this would be rapidly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2017\/05\/22\/irans-president-isnt-a-reformer-hes-an-enabler-215171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">discredited<\/a> when faced with people\u2019s expectations and demands. Iranian people know that massive economic and social destructions along with political suppression will continue in Rouhani\u2019s second term.<\/p>\n<p>Rouhani neither wants, or is able, to seriously alter the foundations, structure, or behavior of this historically backward regime. As the Washington Post editorial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/global-opinions\/theres-no-clear-winner-for-america-in-irans-presidential-election\/2017\/05\/18\/1b3fd734-3b25-11e7-a058-ddbb23c75d82_story.html?utm_term=.aa8a53bd9833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">suggested<\/a>, \u201cReal transformation in Iran will require a collapse of the Islamic Republic.\u201d In early May, Khamenei <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1099661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">admitted<\/a>, \u201ca change of behavior is no different from regime change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Rouhani <a href=\"http:\/\/217.25.54.55\/en\/News\/82521779\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">acknowledged<\/a> that the ruling faction during 38 years \u201conly knew how to execute and imprison people,\u201d but at the same time he praised Khamenei and publicly announced that he is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/iran-election-incumbent-president-hassan-rouhani-is-no-moderate\/article\/2623651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">willing<\/a> to kiss the ring of the \u201cexalted leader\u201d dozens of times.<\/p>\n<p>This is of course not unusual from Rouhani who for nearly four decades has held the highest positions in the regime\u2019s security and military apparatus in domestic suppression and war mongering; he even called for public hanging of conspirators at Friday prayers to demonstrate the regime\u2019s resolve in dealing with opponents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKhamenei\u2019s failure to manipulate the election result to bring Raisi out of the ballot box and make the regime monolithic is a heavy blow for him and a sign of the regime\u2019s approaching demise,\u201d Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran <a href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/22845-rouhani-s-2nd-term-deepens-rift-within-the-regime-intensifies-mullahs-crisis-and-power-struggle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The take away from the 2nd term of Rouhani is that no change should be expected in the policies and behavior of the Iranian regime; the regime is more divided and thus weaker and more vulnerable; and the organized opposition has gained much more public standing. As evident in their sentiments expressed in the run-up to the election farce, the Iranian people see the overthrow of the religious tyranny by the Iranian people and the organized opposition as the only solution to Iran\u2019s problems.<\/p>\n<p>The recent summit in Riyadh where some 50 Muslim nations along with the United States built a consensus, concluded that Islamic extremism is the biggest threat in today\u2019s world and that it must be confronted in a unified way. In his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2017\/05\/21\/president-trumps-speech-arab-islamic-american-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">address<\/a> to the conference, President Donald Trump was correct in stating, &#8220;The Iranian regime&#8217;s longest-suffering victims are its own people.&#8221; King Salman of Saudi Arabia, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques expressed his &#8220;respect and appreciation&#8221; for the Iranian people, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2017\/05\/21\/saudi_king_salman_1979_iranian_revolution_is_responsible_for_growth_of_terrorism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">adding<\/a>, &#8220;The Iranian regime has been the spearhead of global terrorism since the Khomeini revolution until now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As the Trump administration finalizes its review of its policy on Iran, the will of the Iranian people, voiced by their organized opposition, should be taken into account, as a central element of the new policy.
