The greatest single outpouring of that unrest took place exactly one year ago, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/iran-protests-2019-update\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in November 2019<\/a>, when residents of more than 190 cities and towns took to the streets in order to repeat anti-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">regime<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0slogans that had been popularized in a previous nationwide uprising.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That earlier uprising, which began in the final days of 2017,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">once again highlighted the leading role of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/about-iranian-opposition-pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(PMOI-MEK)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Its role in organizing the protests was acknowledged by none other than<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the regime\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. And in the nearly three years since he broke with years of his own regime\u2019s propaganda, Khamenei and other authorities have been regularly warning their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">forces<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">potential for escalating conflict with an organized opposition movement.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This expectation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was made clear on Tuesday by participants in an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/anniversary-of-the-november-2019-uprising\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online conference<\/a> organized by the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/about-ncri\/alternative\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a>. Many decried the overarching Western political impulse as tending toward appeasement, and many also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">outlined how<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0this tendency\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">contributed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to the severity of the Iranian people\u2019s suffering both before and during the coronavirus outbreak.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">NCRI\u2019s president-elect, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/maryam-rajavi\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">implied that Western governments had turned a blind eye to a \u201ccrime against humanity\u201d following the November uprising. Over a period of about a week,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">security forces<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0killed approximately 1,500 peaceful protesters, then set to work torturing many of the 12,000 activists who were taken prisoner during the unrest. No serious measures have been undertaken by the international community in response.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The stunning moment of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>\u2019s contemporary history which emerged during 48 hours of uprising in Nov.2019, was not a fleeting meteoroid but a manifestation of the burning determination that will continue to carry on until the mullahs are overthrown. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cjwaUAamlf\">https:\/\/t.co\/cjwaUAamlf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Maryam Rajavi (@Maryam_Rajavi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Maryam_Rajavi\/status\/1326184666282553347?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the same time, no serious measures have been undertaken by the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">regime<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in order to diminish the feelings of outrage that had been permeating society for years and had been expressed on nearly as grand a scale less than two years earlier. Even if the face of a global crisis of public health, the\u00a0mullahs maintained a focus on pe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t projects with the intention of tightening their grip on power, as opposed to wielding its existing power in responsible and legitimate ways.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These misplaced priorities were highlighted on Tuesday by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the panelists<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the NCRI<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s conference<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, such as Marica\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Montemaggi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an MP from San Marino who said, \u201cThe government keeps investing in projects that have nothing to do with the health and safety of the people despite the pandemic.\u201d And Mrs. Rajavi suggest<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that health and safety had been deliberately sidelined\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in an effort to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0reduce the public\u2019s capacity for renewed uprisings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Still, a common theme in remarks at Tuesday\u2019s conference was that measures such as these would only delay the inevitable and that no efforts at tightening its grip on power would actually save the theocratic regime from overthrow in the long run.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Elaheh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Zabihian<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a representative of the Iranian expatriate community in the United Kingdom, stated that \u201cthe mullahs\u2019 time is over,\u201d after urging Western governments to correct their own misplaced priorities by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recognizing the Iranian people\u2019s right to overthrow the mullahs\u2019 regime.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cInstead of economic relations with the Iranian regime to the benefit of the IRGC,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Zabihian<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said, \u201cWestern governments must designate the [<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/uncategorized\/inside-irans-army-of-terror-and-oppression-revolutionary-guards-irgc\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps<\/a>] and [Ministry of Intelligence and Security] as terrorist organizations and shut down the regime\u2019s embassies.\u201d The two\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oppressive organizations\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">agencies are the main perpetrators of the killings and subsequent torture that followed the November uprising.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Participants of Tuesday\u2019s event also <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">raised serious questions about the legitimacy of Iran\u2019s diplomatic infrastructure ever since its embassy in Vienna was discovered to be the staging ground for a terrorist plot that meant to target an NCRI gathering in France.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-219239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although the mastermind of that terror plot,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the regime\u2019s diplomat-terrorist<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0named\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/irans-regime-expresses-fear-of-upcoming-trial-of-diplomat-terrorist-assadollah-assadi\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assadollah\u00a0Assadi<\/a>, is scheduled to stand trial on November 27 in Belgium, the case has still helped to fuel condemnation of Western \u201cappeasement\u201d policies. Speakers at Tuesday\u2019s made a point of highlighting this situation in order to suggest that Tehran might see itself as having a green light for further reprisals against the Resistance, both at home and abroad, whenever unrest erupts again.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be that as it may, whil<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e this could make the path forward more difficult for the Iranian people, it will certainly not stop them from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rising up<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0again. Mrs. Rajavi insisted that Tehran\u2019s strategies for impeding the Resistance would ultimately backfire. Of the regime\u2019s deliberate mismanagement of the Covid-19 crisis, she said, \u201cEvery new coronavirus death drives the regime one step further towards its downfall,\u201d by adding to the simmering discontent that remains unresolved from two previous, nationwide uprisings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nevertheless, this \u201cdownfall\u201d could arrive more quickly, and with much less bloodshed, if the nations of Europe saw fit to put greater pressure on the Iranian regime and to make it clear that further reprisals, terror plots, and deliberately harmful domestic strategies will not be tolerated.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tehran is presumably sensitive to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the appeasement\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">policy and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is keen to exploit it in situations where more assertive Western policies would be an especially severe threat to the regime\u2019s hold on power. This may explain why the Iranian judiciary just issued an announcement claiming to have pardoned more than 150 \u201csecurity convicts.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But anyone who understands the nature of the Iranian regime also understands that this is a fantasy.\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/irans-regime-claims-it-has-pardoned-detained-protesters-a-lie-to-cover-up-its-crimes\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> judiciary\u2019s proclamation of its own mercy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a \u201cbitter joke\u201d and a \u201cdesperate measure\u201d at a time when the anniversary of the November 2019 uprising is reminding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that\u00a0the regime was responsible for 1,500 shooting deaths in just one week, plus untold numbers of deaths in custody during the ensuing months, not to mention the tens of thousands of coronavirus deaths that could have been prevented if Tehran had any other priority besides consolidating its power.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prior to the start of the coronavirus pandemic,&nbsp;Iran experienced recurring popular unrest for a period of more than two years.
