data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">three-decade struggle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for justice for the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20932-the-1988-massacre-in-iran\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1988 victims<\/a>.<\/span><span their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/un-special-rapporteurs-decry-irans-1988-massacre-as-crimes-against-humanity\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> to the regime\u2019s authorities,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UN experts underlined that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">based on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fact<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the 1988 massacre\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cmay amount to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">crimes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0against humanity.\u201d\u00a0 They also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reiterated that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">if the regime refuses to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">conduct an investigation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and \u201cuphold its obligations under international human rights law,\u201d they call \u201con the international community to take action to investigate the cases including through the establishment of an international investigation.\u201d <\/span><span It marks a turning point in the long-standing struggles of victims\u2019 families and survivors, supported by Iranian human rights organizations and Amnesty International, to end these crimes and obtain truth, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">justice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and reparation,\u201d said Diana\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Eltahawy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Amnesty International\u2019s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Africa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0this regard.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For more than 30 years, the Iranian authorities have systematically concealed the circumstances surrounding their deaths and the whereabouts of their remains, thereby subjecting the victims, including those killed and their surviving families, to the crime of enforced disappearance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d Amnesty highlighted.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the summer of 1988, the Iranian regime summarily and extra-judicially executed tens of thousands of political prisoners held in jails across Iran. The massacre was carried out\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on the basis of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a fatwa by the regime\u2019s then-Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More than 30,000 political prisoners<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0were executed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, mostly members and supporters of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/about-iranian-opposition-pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">People\u2019s Mojahedin\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Organization<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of Iran (PMOI\/MEK).\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many perpetrators of this massacre<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, including\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">current\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minister of Justice Alireza\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">v<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ei<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and head of the Judiciary <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/special-reports\/iran-who-is-ebrahim-raisi\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ebrahim Raisi<\/a>, now hold top positions in Iran.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amnesty had previously published a report<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0after interviewing many surviv<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the 1988 massacre and the family members\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the victims, entitled as \u201cBlood-Soaked Secrets.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Between July and September 1988, the Iranian authorities forcibly disappeared and extrajudicially executed thousands of imprisoned political dissidents in secret and dumped their bodies, mostly in unmarked mass graves. Since then, the authorities have treated the killings as state secrets, tormenting the relatives by refusing to tell them how and why their loved ones were killed and where they are buried. No official has been brought to justice and, in some cases, those involved hold or have held positions of power in Iran. This report calls on the UN to set up an independent investigation to help bring those responsible for these abhorrent crimes to justice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d Amnesty wrote in its report.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The massacre of 1988 remains to be one of the darkest stains on the recent history of mankind, as one of the least exposed and discussed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0crimes against humanity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The international community\u2019s failure to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hold the regime accountable for its major crime against humanity in 1988 has emboldened the regime to continue its human rights violations.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As the opposition president-elect, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/maryam-rajavi\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a> said<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This horrific crime and the 1988 massacre of 30,000 defenseless political prisoners, in which the regime\u2019s former and current leaders have been involved and continue to brazenly defend, are the most manifest cases of crime against humanity. The lack of action vis-\u00e0-vis continuing crime against humanity is a scar on the conscience of humanity.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mrs. Rajavi has repeatedly said<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The time has come for the international community to end three decades of impunity for the clerical regime leaders in Iran and to hold them accountable for their crimes.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The time has come for referring the dossier of human rights violations in Iran, particularly the executions of the 1980s and the 1988 massacre, to the UN Security Council.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The time has come for Khamenei and his accomplices to face
