Destro, the United States Department of State\u2019s Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, underlined his government\u2019s support for the call for justice for the victims of the 1988 massacre in Iran, made by United Nations Special Rapporteurs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States echoes the UN&#8217;s call for an independent investigation into mass disappearances and summary executions in Iran in 1988, though the alleged involvement of current senior officials makes it highly unlikely the regime will investigate itself,\u201d he wrote on Twitter, underlining the regime\u2019s certain refusal to investigate its own crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe regime has failed to provide families an accounting of the fate of their loved ones. Instead, they threaten families and desecrate grave sites. Iranians deserve justice. We urge the international community to hold the regime accountable to the UN&#8217;s demands,\u201d Assistant Secretary Destro added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The regime has failed to provide families an accounting of the fate of their loved ones. Destro (@DRL_AS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DRL_AS\/status\/1337137696637026304?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 1988, the Iranian regime summarily and extra-judicially <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20932-the-1988-massacre-in-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">executed<\/a> over 30,000 political prisoners held in jails across Iran. The massacre was carried out based on a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/anniversary-of-khomeini-s-fatwa-which-led-to-1988-massacre-in-iran\/\" rel=\"noopener\">fatwa<\/a> by the regime\u2019s then-Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini. Most of the victims were members and supporters of the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/i\/primer-the-history-the-peoples-mojahedin-organization-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">PMOI or MEK<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-un-experts-call-for-investigation-of-1988-massacre\/\" rel=\"noopener\">recent letter<\/a> to the Iranian regime, seven UN Special Rapporteurs said the 1988 massacre could amount to \u201ccrimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are concerned that the situation may amount to crimes against humanity. Should your Excellency\u2019s Government continue to refuse to uphold its obligations under international human rights law, we call on the international community to take action to investigate the cases including through the establishment of an international investigation,\u201d read the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo date, no official in Iran has been brought to justice and many of the officials involved continue to hold positions of power including in key judicial, prosecutorial and government bodies responsible for ensuring the victims receive justice,\u201d they added, confirming the regime&#8217;s inaction and the impunity enjoyed by the perpetrators.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UN experts\u2019 communication is a momentous breakthrough. It marks a turning point in the long-standing struggles of victims\u2019 families and survivors, supported by Iranian human rights organizations and Amnesty International, to end these crimes and obtain truth, justice and reparation,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2020\/12\/iran-un-calls-for-accountability-on-1988-prison-massacres-marks-turning-point-in-three-decade-struggle\/#:~:text=of%20these%20individuals.-,The%20UN%20experts'%20communication%20is%20a%20momentous%20breakthrough.,obtain%20truth%2C%20justice%20and%20reparation.\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Diana Eltahawy, Amnesty International\u2019s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.<\/p>\n<p>With respect to this letter, Mrs. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/biography\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/maryam-rajavi-un-experts-report-doubles-the-need-to-refer-the-file-on-the-1988-massacre-in-iran-to-the-security-council-and-to-bring-to-justice-perpetrators-of-this-ongoing-crime-against-humanity\/\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cThe report is a testament to the resistance of those martyrs in defense of their ideals. Thirty-two years after the massacre, this report is a major and qualitative step in the advancement of the movement for justice for the victims of that massacre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Rajavi underlined that the report, which emphasizes the regime\u2019s non-compliance with its \u201cobligations under international human rights law,\u201d including the non-disclosure of the fate and burial place of those executed, heightens the need to refer this dossier on the ongoing crime against humanity to the UN Security Council and to bring to account the officials and perpetrators of this great crime of the century.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; The mullahs ruling Iran, particularly Ali Khamenei, Hassan Rouhani, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/special-reports\/iran-who-is-ebrahim-raisi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebrahim Raisi<\/a>, and many of the ministers and directors of the regime\u2019s Judiciary, Intelligence Ministry and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/inside-irans-army-of-terror-and-oppression-revolutionary-guards-irgc\/\" rel=\"noopener\">IRGC<\/a> were involved in the massacre of political prisoners in 1988 and throughout the 1980s.
