The incident is the first example of such a diplomat before prosecuted\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on the basis of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> alleged ties to Iran terrorism.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is little doubt that he will be convicted, given that the prosecution has provided clear details about how the principal defendant,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assadollah<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assadi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, used his diplomatic passport\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in order to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0bypass security screening and smuggle explosives into Europe. The jail time requested for the three other terrorists (Assadi\u2019s hired accomplices) were 18 years for Amir Saadouni and Nasimeh Naami, and 15 years for Mehrdad Arefani. The prosecutors also requested the latter three to be stripped of their Belgian citizenships. The most important target in this foiled bomb plot was Iranian opposition President Maryam Rajavi, and Saadouni and Naami were told to install the bomb as close as possible to her, the prosecutors emphasized. All the collected evidence indicate Assadi commanded this bombing operation, the prosecutors highlighted, adding he should be condemned for our own security. Assadi played the main role in the attack targeting the Iranian opposition People&#039;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK), the prosecutors continued. Describing how Assadi was arrested in Germany, the prosecutors underscored he enjoys no diplomatic immunity. The plot for mass killing people is the reason why we are resorting to international law to deny him of diplomatic immunity. The Iranian regime not permitting Assadi to attend the first session of this trial, cooperate and answer questions indicates that Tehran was behind this terrorist operation. Since Assadi was working with the regime\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS), one cannot claim this operation was a one-man initiative and the entire regime was involved in this plot. Saadouni began cooperating with the MOIS back in 2004 for money and the pressure placed on his family. Saadouni and Naami significantly increased their ties with the MOIS from 2007 onward. From 2015 the couple is linked with Assadi under the alias \u201cDaniel\u201d and they were in constant contact with him until their arrest on June 30, 2018. The two had constantly travelled to Iran during this period and had met with Assadi in various countries such as Germany, Italy and Austria, receiving money for information. The places of their meetings were always specified by Assadi. Naami was fully trained on how to use the bomb, according to the prosecutors. Assadi went back to Iran several times during his effort to prepare all the necessities for this operation. Strong evidence in this regard was found in his vehicle and mobile phone indicating he went back to Iran once a month facilitating his preparations for the 2018 plot. On March 19, 2018, Naami and Saadouni began exchanging phone calls and emails with Assadi. Their last meeting was on June 28 at a pizzeria in Luxembourg where Naami received the bomb, a new SIM card and 18,000 euros, placing them all in her bag and receiving written training on how to use the bomb. Based on the indictment Mehrdad Arefani began cooperating with and was recruited by the MOIS when he was arrested in Iran back in 1981. Arefani was in constant contact with Assadi, obtaining footages and using equipment to gather information about the MEK for the MOIS. Arefani met with Assadi in various countries and received money from him. Arefani was missioned to control Naami and Saadouni properly carrying out the bomb plot at the scene. Assadi was waiting for Arefani to provide reports and control the scene through him. And given that the primary target was the Iranian Opposition leader <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/maryam-rajavi\/14237-maryam-rajavi\" rel=\"noopener\">Mrs. Maryam <\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rajavi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it is also very likely that those casualties would have included some of the high-profile American and European dignitaries who were seated nearest to her throughout the event.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The details of the plot should have prompted the European Union to revise its Iran policy in the immediate aftermath of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assadi\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0arrest. The absence of this response is arguably a testament to how pre-occupied the EU and its member states have been with shoring up the Iran nuclear deal. At the same time, the pending verdict, therefore, represents an opportunity for Western policy apparatus to respond to the situation as they should have in the first place.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In doing so, Europeans must understand that they are responding to much more than just the one terror plot that is being addressed by the Belgian legal system. The unraveling of that plot helped to reveal important details about the nature of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/key-iranian-regime-officials-involved-in-terrorism\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran\u2019s terror apparatus<\/a> and about its continued operation during the supposedly moderate era that began with the regime\u2019s President Hassan Rouhani\u2019s election in 2013.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the immediate aftermath of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assadi\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0arrest, several persons close to the case acknowledged that Iran\u2019s embassies and consulates are replete with regime intelligence operatives.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assadollah<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assadi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was the third counselor at the Iranian embassy in Vienna until the moment of his arrest. And while he is presently the only diplomat to be prosecuted for his actions on behalf of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security, he is certainly not the only one to have such actions exposed. In 2018 alone, several Iranian diplomats were expelled from Europe in connection with terror plots in Albania and Denmark, as well as the plot targeting France.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The effort to bomb the Free Iran rally was part of a larger phenomenon and one that affirms the need for the EU to hold Tehran accountable for these and other threats.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even if European governments were\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">absolutely confident<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about their security services\u2019 ability to repel any and all Iranian threats at home, there will still be lives put at risk by Iranian impunity. The most recent case was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-human-rights\/iranian-resistance-urges-un-eu-states-especially-france-to-firmly-condemn-the-execution-of-ruhollah-zam\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruhollah\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Zam<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a French resident who was executed on trumped-up charges earlier this month.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"lyte-wrapper\" title=\"Iran&amp;#039;s diplomat &amp;amp; the largest terror plot in Europe. The bomb plot intended to target an annual Iranian opposition rally held in Villepinte, north of Paris, where over 100,000 Iranian dissidents gathered each year. The decision to green-light this terror attack, which could have been one of the largest terrorist attacks in Europe\u2019s history, traces back to the most senior officials of Iran\u2019s regime, according to international news media. On January 9, 2018, Iranian regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said the opposition People&#039;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) were behind Iran&#039;s Dec. 2017-Jan. 2018 protests. From this day forward the regime\u2019s launched plans to carry its largest-ever terror plot on European soil, with the signatures of Khamenei, Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi. The target was the annual Iranian opposition gathering near Paris where over 100,000 people, along with hundreds of political dignitaries, take part. NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi is the keynote speaker at these events. This conference is an event that Zarif describes as a very hostile measure. Senior Iranian regime officials allocated all their assets for this terrorist plot, assigned to their Vienna-based diplomat by the name of Assadollah Assadi. Assadi is a career Intelligence Ministry agent and an expert in explosives. Following a year of preparations, on June 20, 2018, exactly ten days prior to the NCRI\u2019s 2018 gathering in Villepinte near Paris, Assadi was summoned to Tehran and on June 22 he personally transferred the explosive device in his luggage on an Austrian Airbus passenger plane, flight number OS872, to Vienna. The bomb contained 500 grams of TATP explosives with a remote control detonation mechanism. On June 28, Assadi traveled to Luxembourg where he delivered the bomb to two terrorist agents, Nasimeh Na&#039;ami and Amir Saadouni, who was missioned to take the package to the gathering site. Assadi was in close contact with these two agents for years and regularly met with them in various European countries while sending them to Iran for training whenever necessary. The two terrorist agents, while transferring the bomb in their vehicle to Paris and the gathering site, were arrested prior to noon on June 29 in Belgium. On the afternoon of the same day, Mehrdad Arefani, a third terrorist, was arrested at the gathering site in Villepinte, just north of Paris. Assadi himself was arrested on the afternoon of the next day, The truth is that Asadollah Assadi is a senior ranking MOIS member working under the cover of a diplomat. Both of his posts as an intelligence official and diplomat indicate that he is part of a military\/administrative chain of command, making both the MOIS and Foreign Ministry responsible for his measures. This hierarchy begins with his two superiors in both the MOIS and Foreign Ministry and linked to both ministers directly. These two ministers are under the authority of the regime\u2019s President. The mullahs\u2019 leader is also the highest official responsible in this regime. Furthermore, the MOIS is specifically and directly under the supervision of Khamenei himself and the foreign minister also reports directly to him. This indicates very well that the appeasement policy, alongside neglecting the regime\u2019s terrorist crimes and espionage, have resulted in the mullahs taking on such unprecedented crimes despite the high risks. Its diplomat terrorists and senior officials count on appeasement on one hand and taking advantage of nuclear talks with the Europeans on the other, providing the regime with a sense of immunity. NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi said the following during an online conference on October 22 regarding the case of Assadollah Assadi: 1. European countries must set aside all political considerations in this case. The regime\u2019s leaders must be prosecuted and they must face justice. This is a necessary and a preventive measure against terrorism under the name of Islam with the clerical regime as its exporter and central banker. 2. Khamenei and Rouhani took a great risk by sending a diplomat to carry out the bombing and slaughter. The reason is that they are extremely vulnerable in the face of the people\u2019s uprisings, the spread of the Resistance\u2019s influence, and the overthrow of their regime. 3. The policy of appeasement has greatly emboldened the regime over the past 40 years. And that in turn should raise concern among all Western policymakers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">about the dangers that may be looming while tensions with the regime continue to escalate. If they do respond this way, some of those policymakers will be tempted to look to their relationships with the so-called \u201cmoderate\u201d Iranian officials like <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/fact-sheet-record-of-mohammad-javad-zarif-foreign-minister-of-irans-regime\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Foreign Minister\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Javad<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Zarif, as a means of defusing those tensions. But as the nation\u2019s top diplomat, Zarif is the overseer of those figures, like\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assadollah<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assadi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who have abused their positions to attack Iranian advocates for democracy and to threaten the lives of Western nationals.
