Unlike other governments whose priority has been to contain Covid-19, Iran’s regime has tried to use the pandemic to prolong its rule.

Iran is a place where the international community effectively should focus its efforts. Iran has been hit harder than any surrounding country by coronavirus outbreaks, and that hardship has been exacerbated by worsening conditions in other areas. Human rights crises are a constant feature of the theocratic regime, both those crises have grown worse throughout 2020, partly because of the regime’s culpability for uncontrolled infection and partly because the regime has aggressively cracked down on dissent to assuage its own anxiety over recent outpourings of popular dissent.

Khamenei dismisses Coronavirus as not that big a deal, even calls it a blessing!

Watch this video on YouTube<meta itemprop="description" content="Khamenei dismisses Coronavirus as not that big a deal, even calls it a blessing! The international community has been thoroughly distracted by the pandemic. Those obstacles were all the more challenging in light of the fact that European policymakers were already preoccupied with trying to salvage the 2015 Iran nuclear deal with world powers, prioritizing their economic interests over the Iranian people’s rights and their own humanitarian values.

However, 2020 also witnessed important steps regarding the regime’s human rights record and its other malign activities.

In September, a group of United Nations human rights experts wrote a letter to the Iranian regime questioning it over the unresolved history of a massacre of political prisoners that took place in the summer of 1988. The letter demanded answers about the incident itself and about the ongoing harassment of those Iranians who are pushing for justice for the massacre’s victims and their loved ones. Tehran was given time to respond but declined to do so, and the letter was released to the public this month.

UN experts call for investigation of 1988 Massacre in Iran - December 2020

Watch this video on YouTube<meta itemprop="description" content="December 2020 - Seven United Nations human rights experts have written a letter to Iran’s regime describing the 1988 massacre of thousands of political prisoners as “crimes against humanity.” Iran’s regime carried out the massacre in the summer of 1988 based on a fatwa by then-Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini. More than 30,000 political prisoners were massacred. The vast majority of the victims were activists of the opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI-MEK). The letter by the Special Rapporteurs, dated September 3, 2020, has only just been made public by the UN. It calls on the Iranian regime to prosecute the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre. It adds that if Tehran continues to refuse to uphold its obligations under international human rights law, the UN experts call on the international community to launch its own investigation into the massacre “including through the establishment of an international investigation.” The UN experts wrote: “In 1988, the Iranian authorities forcibly disappeared and extrajudicially executed thousands of imprisoned political dissidents affiliated with political opposition groups” President-elect of the NCRI called the report “a major and qualitative step in the advancement of the movement for justice for the victims of that massacre.“ Mrs. Rajavi noted that the report, which emphasizes the regime’s non-compliance with its “obligations under international human rights law,” including the non-disclosure of the fate and burial place of those executed, heightens the need to refer this dossier on the ongoing crime against humanity to the UN Security Council, and to bring to account the officials and perpetrators of this great crime of the century. The letter itself emphasizes that a number of members of the “death commissions” that oversaw the killings are currently top positions in the regime, include as head of the judiciary and the Ministry of Justice, and Supreme Leader.

It was largely these figures who guided the regime’s response to the uprisings in January 2018 and November 2019, and to a wide range of other outpourings of dissent inside Iran. It was also them other top officials of the regime who resolved to take their fight with the democratic opposition beyond Iran’s borders, as when agents of Tehran plotted to set off a bomb at the Free Iran gathering that was organized near France in June 2018 by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

That plot was disrupted by European security services and the conspirators were apprehended. Among them was a high-ranking diplomat-terrorist, Assadollah Assadi, who was serving as the third counsellor at the regime’s embassy in Vienna and has since become the first such diplomat to be formally prosecuted in connection with terrorist activity. The significance of this development can hardly be understated. Assadi’s trial is indeed the trial of the entire regime, which based on evidence, sought to eliminate the Resistance movement in 2018.

Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi faces terrorism trial in Belgium court

Watch this video on YouTube<meta itemprop="description" content="Antwerp court hearings – Friday, November 27, 2020 Belgian prosecutors requested a 20-year sentence for Iranian regime diplomat-terrorist Assadollah Assadi following its four-hour indictment. The jail time requested for the three other terrorists (Assadi’s hired accomplices) were 18 years for Amir Saadouni and Nasimeh Naami, and 15 years for Mehrdad Arefani. The prosecutors also requested the latter three to be stripped of their Belgian citizenships. The most important target in this foiled bomb plot was Iranian opposition President Maryam Rajavi, and Saadouni and Naami were told to install the bomb as close as possible to her, the prosecutors emphasized. All the collected evidence indicate Assadi commanded this bombing operation, the prosecutors highlighted, adding he should be condemned for our own security. Assadi played the main role in the attack targeting the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), the prosecutors continued. Describing how Assadi was arrested in Germany, the prosecutors underscored he enjoys no diplomatic immunity. The plot for mass killing people is the reason why we are resorting to international law to deny him of diplomatic immunity. The Iranian regime not permitting Assadi to attend the first session of this trial, cooperate and answer questions indicates that Tehran was behind this terrorist operation. Since Assadi was working with the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS), one cannot claim this operation was a one-man initiative and the entire regime was involved in this plot. Saadouni began cooperating with the MOIS back in 2004 for money and the pressure placed on his family. Saadouni and Naami significantly increased their ties with the MOIS from 2007 onward. From 2015 the couple is linked with Assadi under the alias “Daniel” and they were in constant contact with him until their arrest on June 30, 2018. The two had constantly travelled to Iran during this period and had met with Assadi in various countries such as Germany, Italy and Austria, receiving money for information. The places of their meetings were always specified by Assadi. Naami was fully trained on how to use the bomb, according to the prosecutors. Assadi went back to Iran several times during his effort to prepare all the necessities for this operation. Strong evidence in this regard was found in his vehicle and mobile phone indicating he went back to Iran once a month facilitating his preparations for the 2018 plot. On March 19, 2018, Naami and Saadouni began exchanging phone calls and emails with Assadi. Their last meeting was on June 28 at a pizzeria in Luxembourg where Naami received the bomb, a new SIM card and 18,000 euros, placing them all in her bag and receiving written training on how to use the bomb. Based on the indictment Mehrdad Arefani began cooperating with and was recruited by the MOIS when he was arrested in Iran back in 1981. Arefani was in constant contact with Assadi, obtaining footages and using equipment to gather information about the MEK for the MOIS. Arefani met with Assadi in various countries and received money from him. Arefani was missioned to control Naami and Saadouni properly carrying out the bomb plot at the scene. Assadi was waiting for Arefani to provide reports and control the scene through him. But the growing public hatred toward and the role of the Iranian opposition in guiding the society, coupled with recent developments outside of Iran, pose a serious threat to the regime’s existence. In other words, the regime’s policy of using the Covid-19 mass casualties to create a barrier against people’s uprisings, have failed.

The Iranian opposition, People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI-MEK) has continued the struggle for freedom and holding the regime to account through international instances despite the pandemic. That work has persisted throughout 2020, though advocates for the Resistance were surely aware of the fact that they faced an even more steep uphill battle than in years past. Nevertheless, the UN’s expanded focus on the 1988 massacre is arguably one example of how that activism has paid off.

The UN experts’ letter and the verdict in the Assadi trial should push the international community toward serious, collective action in the form of sanctions and diplomatic isolation for the Iranian regime. These measures along with the Iranian people’s desire and their inevitable uprising will double down the previous challenges to the regime’s hold on power.

In the aftermath of 2020, the International community should stand by the Iranian people and their Resistance movement in ousting the regime.

Events in 2020 showed Iranian society is on the verge of explosion, while the regime clings on to its fragile rule through brute suppression and export of terror abroad.
