{"id":232963,"date":"2021-01-11T08:47:31","date_gmt":"2021-01-11T13:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/?p=232963"},"modified":"2023-02-01T05:25:07","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T04:25:07","slug":"anniversary-of-january-2020-iran-protests-the-regime-continues-violating-rights-of-protesters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-protests\/anniversary-of-january-2020-iran-protests-the-regime-continues-violating-rights-of-protesters\/","title":{"rendered":"Anniversary of January 2020 Iran Protests: The Regime Continues Violating Rights of Protesters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Anti-Regime_Protests_in_Several_Iranian_Cities-2\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-213003\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Anti-Regime_Protests_in_Several_Iranian_Cities-2.jpg\" alt=\"Anti-Regime_Protests_in_Several_Iranian_Cities-2\" width=\"800\" height=\"519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Anti-Regime_Protests_in_Several_Iranian_Cities-2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Anti-Regime_Protests_in_Several_Iranian_Cities-2-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Anti-Regime_Protests_in_Several_Iranian_Cities-2-768x498.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Anti-Regime_Protests_in_Several_Iranian_Cities-2-696x452.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">January 11 marks the first anniversary of the nationwide Iran protests that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-iran-protest\/anti-regime-protests-in-several-iranian-cities\/\" rel=\"noopener\">erupted <\/a>after the regime acknowledged it had downed a Ukrainian passenger jet, killing all 176 passengers, after three days of an initial cover-up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Two months after the major Iran <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-november-2019-uprising-and-its-amplifications\/\" rel=\"noopener\">protests<\/a> in November 2019 and despite the regime\u2019s heavy crackdown and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/iran-protests\/27081-over-1-500-killed-in-the-iranian-people-s-nationwide-uprising-names-of-504-martyrs-released\" rel=\"noopener\">massacring<\/a> 1500 protesters, Iranians poured onto the streets in January 2020, once again demanding regime change and righteously identifying the regime as the only source of Iran\u2019s problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">These protests first <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-protests\/27206-anti-regime-protests-by-university-students-in-tehran-over-the-downing-of-ukrainian-plane\" rel=\"noopener\">started<\/a> on January 11, when officials admitted the Revolutionary Guards (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/inside-irans-army-of-terror-and-oppression-revolutionary-guards-irgc\/\" rel=\"noopener\">IRGC<\/a>) had shot down flight PS752 minutes after its departure from Tehran to Kiev, with two surface-to-air missiles.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">January 11 &#8211; Tehran, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a><br \/>Large crowd outside Amir Kabir University<br \/>Protesters chanting:<br \/>&quot;I will kill he who killed my brother!&quot;<br \/>This is a clear warning to the mullahs&#39; regime.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IranProtests?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IranProtests<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WfC6lStKgA\">pic.twitter.com\/WfC6lStKgA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; People&#39;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) (@Mojahedineng) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mojahedineng\/status\/1216026506662572032?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The officials including the regime\u2019s President Hassan Rouhani and IRGC commanders blamed the crash on technical issues for three consecutive days. Yet, the evidence, including footage clearly showed two missiles fired at the plane.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Once unable to continue the cover-up, the regime admitted it had shot down the airliner. Iranians took to the streets and chanted anti-regime slogans and mainly demanded the regime\u2019s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, as Iran\u2019s commander in chief, resign. They rejected the regime\u2019s claims that this crime was due to \u201chuman error.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime cracked down on the protesters, arrested dozens and took them to its torture chambers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Amnesty International later <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2020\/01\/iran-scores-injured-as-security-forces-use-unlawful-force-to-crush-protests\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that \u201con 11 and 12 January security forces fired pointed pellets from airguns, usually used for hunting, at peaceful protesters causing bleeding and painful injuries. Security forces also used rubber bullets, tear gas and pepper spray to disperse protesters as well as kicking and punching them, beating them with batons and carrying out arbitrary arrests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"screencapture-amnesty-org-en-latest-news-2020-01-iran-scores-injured-as-security-forces-use-unlawful-force-to-crush-protests-2021-01-11-14_00_01-1\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-232965\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/screencapture-amnesty-org-en-latest-news-2020-01-iran-scores-injured-as-security-forces-use-unlawful-force-to-crush-protests-2021-01-11-14_00_01-1.jpg\" alt=\"screencapture-amnesty-org-en-latest-news-2020-01-iran-scores-injured-as-security-forces-use-unlawful-force-to-crush-protests-2021-01-11-14_00_01-1\" width=\"800\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/screencapture-amnesty-org-en-latest-news-2020-01-iran-scores-injured-as-security-forces-use-unlawful-force-to-crush-protests-2021-01-11-14_00_01-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/screencapture-amnesty-org-en-latest-news-2020-01-iran-scores-injured-as-security-forces-use-unlawful-force-to-crush-protests-2021-01-11-14_00_01-1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/screencapture-amnesty-org-en-latest-news-2020-01-iran-scores-injured-as-security-forces-use-unlawful-force-to-crush-protests-2021-01-11-14_00_01-1-768x428.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/screencapture-amnesty-org-en-latest-news-2020-01-iran-scores-injured-as-security-forces-use-unlawful-force-to-crush-protests-2021-01-11-14_00_01-1-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/screencapture-amnesty-org-en-latest-news-2020-01-iran-scores-injured-as-security-forces-use-unlawful-force-to-crush-protests-2021-01-11-14_00_01-1-696x388.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On January 15, 2020, Amnesty <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2020\/01\/iran-scores-injured-as-security-forces-use-unlawful-force-to-crush-protests\/\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed<\/a> that the regime\u2019s \u201csecurity forces fired pointed pellets, causing painful wounds and requiring surgical treatment to remove the pellets, as well as injuries consistent with rubber bullet use. Such pellets are used for hunting small game and are completely inappropriate for use in any policing situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThere are reports that scores of people, including university students, have been arrested in cities where protests have taken place,\u201d Amnesty wrote adding that it has \u201calso received shocking allegations of sexual violence against at least one woman arbitrarily arrested by plain-clothes security agents and detained for several hours in a police station.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cAccording to an informed source, while in detention, the woman was taken to a room where she was questioned by a security official who raped her by forcing her to perform oral sex on him and then attempted forced sexual intercourse,\u201d Amnesty added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Simultaneous with its refusal to stand to account for its crime in killing 176 innocent passengers, the regime has continued arresting and torturing those who participated in the January protests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On May 2, the Tehran Revolutionary Court <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iran-hrm.com\/index.php\/2020\/05\/02\/iran-courts-sentence-january-protesters-to-prison-ana-lashes\/\" rel=\"noopener\">sentenced<\/a> Seyed Mostafa Hashemzadeh to five years in prison and 74 lashes for taking part in the January protests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime has not only investigated its crime of killing 176 innocents, but it continues inhumanely punishing those who protested the inhumane downing of PS752.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223173\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223173\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"The-Ukrainian-airliner-PS752-was-shot-down-by-the-Iranian-regime\u2019s-Revolutionary-Guards-on-January-8-2020-killing-all-176-on-board\" class=\"wp-image-223173\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/The-Ukrainian-airliner-PS752-was-shot-down-by-the-Iranian-regime\u2019s-Revolutionary-Guards-on-January-8-2020-killing-all-176-on-board.jpg\" alt=\"The-Ukrainian-airliner-PS752-was-shot-down-by-the-Iranian-regime\u2019s-Revolutionary-Guards-on-January-8-2020-killing-all-176-on-board\" width=\"800\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/The-Ukrainian-airliner-PS752-was-shot-down-by-the-Iranian-regime\u2019s-Revolutionary-Guards-on-January-8-2020-killing-all-176-on-board.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/The-Ukrainian-airliner-PS752-was-shot-down-by-the-Iranian-regime\u2019s-Revolutionary-Guards-on-January-8-2020-killing-all-176-on-board-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ukrainian airliner PS752 was shot down by the Iranian regime\u2019s Revolutionary Guards on January 8, 2020, killing all 176 on board<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime will never investigate its own crimes and will continue violating human rights of Iranian citizens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime will continue refusing to investigate its crime because the mullahs fear international consequences of this heinous crime. In fact, the regime has failed to investigate and prosecute any of its many crimes against humanity in the last 41 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime has refused and failed to investigate the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20932-the-1988-massacre-in-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">1988 massacre<\/a> of over 30,000 political prisoners. Seven United Nations\u2019 experts, in a letter to the regime in September 2020, which was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/significance-of-un-experts-letter-on-1988-massacre-victory-for-justice-seeking-movement\/\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in December, underlined that the 1988 massacre \u201cmay amount to crimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">These UN experts underlined: \u201cTo date, no official in Iran has been brought to justice and many of the officials involved continue to hold positions of power including in key judicial, prosecutorial and government bodies responsible for ensuring the victims receive justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In fact, as the UN experts underlined the \u201cinternational community\u2019s failure to act \u201chad a devastating impact on the survivors and families as well as on the general situation of human rights in Iran and emboldened Iran to continue to conceal the fate of the victims and to maintain a strategy of deflection and denial that continue to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This inaction has continued to this day, allowing the regime to massacre 1500 protesters, kill 176 passengers and arrest and torture those who protest these criminal acts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime will continue its human rights violations until it is held accountable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The European Union recently adopted a new global sanctions regime against human rights violators. Sadly, EU leaders continue their economic relations with Iran, where mass murderers rule. The EU\u2019s inaction and prioritizing financial interests over human rights values in dealing with Tehran only allow the regime to continue its human rights violations. EU leaders have expressed concern over years about ongoing human rights abuses in Iran and condemned the regime. But these \u201ccondemnations\u201d and expressions of \u201cconcern\u201d will not stop the regime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The EU should lead an international effort to hold the regime\u2019s leaders to account for their crimes against humanity. The international community should send a fact-finding mission to the Iranian prisons and secure the release of all prisoners, particularly those arrested during the nationwide Iran protests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The EU should impose sanctions on the regime\u2019s leaders for human rights violations and make all relations with Tehran conditioned to an end to the regime\u2019s human rights abuses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
