reported<\/a> on the increasing human rights abuses in Iran during the presidency of Hassan Rouhani.<\/p>\nThe Iranian judiciary and security apparatus since 2013 has intensified the suppression of human rights defenders in Iran, according to a report by Amnesty International published on Wednesday August 2.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Iranian authorities have waged a \u2018vicious\u2019 crackdown on human rights defenders since Hassan Rouhani became president, demonising and imprisoning activists who dare to stand up for people\u2019s rights, Amnesty writes.<\/p>\n
This way, according to the human rights organization, the hope of improving the human rights situation in Iran after the election of Hassan Rouhani has not really come to fruition.<\/p>\n
According to the report, the Iranian judiciary has faced many \u201chuman rights activists\u201d and defenders of human rights over the past four years and charged them with \u201cacting against national security.\u201d The Revolutionary Courts of the Iranian regime have also considered human rights activities as \u201ccriminal\u201d activities based on extremely vague and general accusations.<\/p>\n
Amnesty International writes in its report that \u201cOffences\u201d of some of the convicts \u201cinclude communicating with EU, and UN, as well as with media outlets, international trade union associations and human rights organisations based outside Iran \u2013 including Amnesty International.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCaught in a web of repression\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nAccording to Dieter Karge, an Iran expert at Amnesty International in Germany, the main victims of the crackdown were human rights lawyers, syndicate and trade union representatives and activists who have been working for women’s rights, the abolition of the death penalty and for defense of the rights of minorities, including religious minorities.<\/p>\n
Those activists who tried to shed lights on the mass executions of 30,000 political prisoners in the summer of 1988 were particularly targeted by the attacks and suppressions of the judiciary and security agencies, according to the Amnesty International official.<\/p>\n
The new Amnesty International report \u201cCaught in a web of repression: Iran\u2019s human rights defenders under attack,\u201d citing current reports shows that the pressure and repression in Iran have exacerbated since the arrival of Hassan Rouhani.<\/p>\n
According to Dieter Karge, human rights defenders in Iran are marked with titles such as \u201cforeign spies\u201d and \u201ctraitors\u201d and condemned to long-term prisons, usually more than 10 years. Revolutionary courts are often held behind closed doors, and the court duration, in some cases, takes just a few minutes.<\/p>\n
\u201cTorture to extract confession\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nIn many cases, detainees have been tortured or subjected to abuse and ill-treatment to \u201cconfess,\u201d Karge added.<\/p>\n
Amnesty International’s report states that the Iranian regime has so far failed to take effective action to deal with these explicit human rights abuses and to stop it, but on the contrary, has always rejected reports related to human rights abuses in Iran, claiming that in this country no one is detained solely for the peaceful use of rights such as freedom of expression and assembly.<\/p>\n
The Amnesty\u2019s report specifically mentions 45 people in Iran who have fallen victim to peaceful human rights activism. Of these, 21 were recorded with details.<\/p>\n
Narges Mohammadi, human rights activist; Athena Daemi, proponent of abolition of the death penalty; Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraei, civil activist; Jafar Azimzadeh, Secretary of the Board of the Iran Workers\u2019 Free Trade Union and Ismail Abdi, Secretary of the Teachers’ Association of Iran, are among the names referred to by Amnesty International.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
