According to the prosecutors, the primary target was Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the opposition&#8217;s president-elect. Assadi had instructed his operatives to plant the bomb as close as possible to her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In an article on January 13, the French daily Le Monde revealed how the regime in Iran had mobilized its efforts to save Assadi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Le Monde revealed that a new piece of evidence in the Belgian investigations, which has been recently published, &#8220;confirms the amount of attention that Tehran is paying&#8221; to Assadi&#8217;s case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8220;A note drafted by security and sent to the federal prosecutor&#8217;s office, in charge of terrorism cases, detailed, in August 2019, the numerous visits by Iranian officials to Mr. Assadi, then in preventive detention in Belgian Limburg,&#8221; Le Monde added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Le Monde <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/international\/article\/2021\/01\/13\/attentat-dejoue-de-villepinte-teheran-mobilise-pour-qu-un-diplomate-echappe-a-la-prison_6066149_3210.html\" rel=\"noopener\">underlined<\/a> that at least &#8220;fourteen personalities&#8221; of the regime in Tehran visited Assadi. The jail time requested for the three other terrorists (Assadi\u2019s hired accomplices) were 18 years for Amir Saadouni and Nasimeh Naami, and 15 years for Mehrdad Arefani. The prosecutors also requested the latter three to be stripped of their Belgian citizenships. The most important target in this foiled bomb plot was Iranian opposition President Maryam Rajavi, and Saadouni and Naami were told to install the bomb as close as possible to her, the prosecutors emphasized. All the collected evidence indicate Assadi commanded this bombing operation, the prosecutors highlighted, adding he should be condemned for our own security. Assadi played the main role in the attack targeting the Iranian opposition People&#039;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK), the prosecutors continued. Describing how Assadi was arrested in Germany, the prosecutors underscored he enjoys no diplomatic immunity. The plot for mass killing people is the reason why we are resorting to international law to deny him of diplomatic immunity. The Iranian regime not permitting Assadi to attend the first session of this trial, cooperate and answer questions indicates that Tehran was behind this terrorist operation. Since Assadi was working with the regime\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS), one cannot claim this operation was a one-man initiative and the entire regime was involved in this plot. Saadouni began cooperating with the MOIS back in 2004 for money and the pressure placed on his family. Saadouni and Naami significantly increased their ties with the MOIS from 2007 onward. From 2015 the couple is linked with Assadi under the alias \u201cDaniel\u201d and they were in constant contact with him until their arrest on June 30, 2018. The two had constantly travelled to Iran during this period and had met with Assadi in various countries such as Germany, Italy and Austria, receiving money for information. The places of their meetings were always specified by Assadi. Naami was fully trained on how to use the bomb, according to the prosecutors. Assadi went back to Iran several times during his effort to prepare all the necessities for this operation. Strong evidence in this regard was found in his vehicle and mobile phone indicating he went back to Iran once a month facilitating his preparations for the 2018 plot. On March 19, 2018, Naami and Saadouni began exchanging phone calls and emails with Assadi. Their last meeting was on June 28 at a pizzeria in Luxembourg where Naami received the bomb, a new SIM card and 18,000 euros, placing them all in her bag and receiving written training on how to use the bomb. Based on the indictment Mehrdad Arefani began cooperating with and was recruited by the MOIS when he was arrested in Iran back in 1981. Arefani was in constant contact with Assadi, obtaining footages and using equipment to gather information about the MEK for the MOIS. Arefani met with Assadi in various countries and received money from him. Arefani was missioned to control Naami and Saadouni properly carrying out the bomb plot at the scene. Assadi was waiting for Arefani to provide reports and control the scene through him. However, the Belgian authorities have only been able to identify three of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Le Monde then referred to Mrs. Rajavi&#8217;s testimony, during which she &#8220;gave investigators a note detailing the role of some of these officials. One of them was, in fact, one of the main leaders of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security, in charge of overseeing agents stationed in foreign countries and acting undercover.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8220;A special committee bringing together different services has also been set up in Tehran to follow up on the Assadi case,&#8221; Le Monde wrote, adding, &#8220;Assadi threatened Belgium with possible retaliation if it condemns him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Besides its diplomatic pressure, the regime has tried to use its hostage-taking tool and blackmailing campaign to force Belgian authorities to release Assadi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Simultaneous with Assadi&#8217;s trial, the regime announced it would execute <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/iran-call-for-immediate-international-action-to-secure-the-release-of-ahmad-reza-jalali-and-to-prevent-his-execution\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ahmadreza Djalali<\/a>, an Iranian-Swedish academic who taught in Belgium. In reaction to the regime&#8217;s extortion campaign, the Belgian Parliament adopted a resolution, threatening to cut all relations with Tehran&#8217;s regime if Mr. Djalali was executed. The regime was thus forced to momentarily halt his execution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Having failed to blackmail Belgium, the regime tried to undermine the Belgian court&#8217;s legitimacy in holding Assadi on trial.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Despite having its diplomat-terrorist caught red-handed, Tehran&#8217;s regime has tried to portray him as an innocent &#8220;diplomat&#8221; on duty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A regime that has massacred over <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20932-the-1988-massacre-in-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">30,000 political<\/a> prisoners in 1988 and has one of the main perpetrators of this massacre, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/special-reports\/iran-who-is-ebrahim-raisi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebrahim Raisi<\/a>, as its Judiciary Chief \u2013 who continues the extrajudicial punishments &#8211; called the Belgian court &#8220;illegitimate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi&#8217;s trial is historic since it is the first time Iran&#8217;s career diplomat has gone on trial for terrorism in Europe and could mark a precedent. Therefore, Assadi&#8217;s trial infuriated the regime.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Since Assadi&#8217;s arrest, the regime&#8217;s official policy has insisted on Assadi&#8217;s so-called &#8220;diplomatic immunity&#8221; and that the Belgian authorities cannot prosecute Assadi. Despite being caught red-handed, Assadi also repeated the same bogus claim and has refused to appear in court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Yet, during Assadi&#8217;s trial, the prosecutor said that according to Belgium&#8217;s 2002 legislation, even if Assadi had diplomatic immunity, Belgian authorities could have arrested him. The prosecutor added that even according to Austrian law, Belgian authorities were entitled to arrest Assadi since he planned to commit mass murder. International law allows authorities to strip Assadi of his diplomatic immunity and arrest him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi&#8217;s trial is the trial of the entire regime. &#8220;According to the long investigation by the Belgian justice, state security, and the intelligence service, the whole operation was designed at the highest level in Tehran, in connection with the defendants who had worked for a long time for the [regime&#8217;s] Ministry of Intelligence and Security,&#8221; Le Monde wrote in this regard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">According to Le Monde, a Belgian security official said the action was instigated &#8216;in the name of Iran, under its leadership.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\">Final Words<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The 2018 bombing plot was an act of state-sponsored terrorism by the Iranian regime and Assadi was tasked to carry out this plot on behalf of Iran&#8217;s Ministry of Intelligence with coordination with the Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi has been clinging to his so-called diplomatic immunity. He will continue doing so this since his boss, the regime&#8217;s Foreign Minister <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-world\/26715-a-look-at-the-record-of-iran-regime-foreign-minister-javad-zarif\" rel=\"noopener\">Mohamad Javad Zarif<\/a>, who played a crucial role in facilitating the bomb plot, still enjoys his &#8220;diplomatic immunity&#8221; and is greeted by the European leaders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi&#8217;s trial marks a moment for the EU to end the regime&#8217;s terrorism and blackmailing campaign by ending the appeasement policy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The EU should shut down all Iranian regime&#8217;s embassies and expel its so-called &#8220;diplomats&#8221;.
