The continued executions underline Tehran\u2019s intention of continuing human rights violations despite global \u201ccondemnations\u201d and its disregard for international human rights standards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The United Nations issued its 67th resolution of condemnation over the Iranian regime\u2019s human rights violations on December 16. Less than a week after the UN resolution, the regime executed 14 prisoners, showing its absolute defiance of international norms, condemnations, and human rights standards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime showed its disregard for international verbal condemnations, actions, and outcries, when it executed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/breaking-news-the-clerical-regime-in-iran-hanged-the-wrestler-navid-afkari\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Navid Afkari<\/a>, Iran\u2019s national wrestling champion, in September, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-human-rights\/iranian-resistance-urges-un-eu-states-especially-france-to-firmly-condemn-the-execution-of-ruhollah-zam\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruhollah Zam<\/a>, a French resident, in December.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime continues using capital punishments to intimidate the public and prevent people\u2019s uprisings. The law says that if someone yells and spreads fear, he is waging war on God.\u201d\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:853px;margin:5px;\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In other words, the gross human rights violations are an inseparable part of the mullahs\u2019 regime. The rising number of executions and brutal tortures in Iran is not a surprise when the current Judiciary Chief is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/special-reports\/iran-who-is-ebrahim-raisi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebrahim Raisi<\/a>, also known as the \u201changing Judge\u201d for his role in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" rel=\"noopener\">1988 massacre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In the summer of 1988, Raisi and other members of the \u201cDeath Commissions,\u201d applied a fatwa by Ruhollah Khomeini, then-Supreme Leader, of massacring prisoners who were affiliated to the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/i\/primer-the-history-the-peoples-mojahedin-organization-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">PMOI\/MEK<\/a>). Political prisoners affiliated to other groups were executed in a second wave. At least 30,000 political prisoners were massacred in 1988 and buried secretly in mass graves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In a letter in September, which was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/significance-of-un-experts-letter-on-1988-massacre-victory-for-justice-seeking-movement\/\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in December, a group of UN experts underlined that the 1988 massacre \u201cmay amount to crimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">They also emphasized how the regime in Tehran has refused to investigate this crime against humanity, and in fact has provided \u201csystematic impunity\u201d to the perpetrators, by offering them top governmental and judicial positions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The UN experts also criticized the international community\u2019s inaction vis-\u00e0-vis this crime against humanity which \u201chad a devastating impact on the survivors and families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Most importantly, the UN experts underlined this inaction had also a devastating impact on \u201con the general situation of human rights in Iran and emboldened Iran to continue to conceal the fate of the victims and to maintain a strategy of deflection and denial that continue to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As the UN experts underlined, the international community\u2019s failure in holding the regime to account for its crimes has allowed the regime to continue human rights abuses. The international community\u2019s actions have not exceeded \u201cletters\u201d and \u201ccondemnations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">During the November 2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-november-2019-uprising-and-its-amplifications\/\" rel=\"noopener\">uprising<\/a>, the regime massacred <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/iran-protests\/27081-over-1-500-killed-in-the-iranian-people-s-nationwide-uprising-names-of-504-martyrs-released\" rel=\"noopener\">1500 people<\/a> on the streets. But the international community did not go beyond \u201ccondemning\u201d the massacre. Many European countries have even redoubled their efforts since the November uprising to establish business relations with the regime. Meanwhile the uprising and the regime\u2019s violence showed that Iranians do not want this regime and the regime will lose its grip on power if it halts human rights violations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The European Union has since continued its efforts to revive the already dead Iran nuclear agreement, despite the regime\u2019s violations of its commitments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">While in December the EU adopted its new global sanctions regime, targeting human rights violators in all countries, EU leaders continue their relations with the regime in Tehran, which is the world\u2019s number executioner per capita.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The time has come for the EU to go beyond resolutions and condemnations and take concrete actions. The EU should use its \u201cMagnitsky Act\u201d and impose sanctions against all the regime\u2019s leaders for their role in human rights violations.
