The Iranian regime\u2019s authorities continue their killing spree, enjoying what seems to be systematic impunity. This figure does not include prisoners secretly executed and whose identities are not known.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In another development, Hadi Rostami, sentenced to finger amputation, committed suicide in Urumaiah prison on January 18. Last November the regime\u2019s court in Urumaiah issued this medieval verdict.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Despite global condemnations, the regime continues issuing harsh and inhumane sentences and its officials defend these inhumane methods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThe Global Arrogance [international community] monitors Iran [regime] regarding [hand amputation] and questions the implementation of Islamic codes and has tightened the hands of judges. But the sentence of amputation must be carried out for the thieves so that these criminals will stop their evil deeds,\u201d Entekhab daily wrote on January 05, quoting Mousavi Largani, Member of the Presidium of the regime\u2019s Majlis [parliament].<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Inmate Hadi Rostami, the 4 fingers of whose right hand are due to be amputated, attempted suicide on Jan. 18, by swallowing glass splinters. He did so in protest to being detained in a high security ward in the Central Prison of Urmia, NW <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>. He has been taken to hospital. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fEvykC0x8G\">pic.twitter.com\/fEvykC0x8G<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; IRAN HRM (@IranHrm) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IranHrm\/status\/1351993496496992260?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 20, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The so-called \u201cmoderate\u201d president, Hassan Rouhani, has over 4,000 executions on his record since he assumed office in 2013, including 111 women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Rouhani\u2019s current and former Justice Ministers, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iran1988.org\/seyyed-alireza-avaei\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Alireza Avaii<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iran1988.org\/mostafa-pour-mohammadi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Mostafa Pourmohammadi<\/a>, respectively, along with the current Judiciary Chief, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/special-reports\/iran-who-is-ebrahim-raisi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebrahim Raisi<\/a> (aka hanging judge), are the main perpetrators of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" rel=\"noopener\">1988 massacre<\/a>. Over 30,000 political prisoners were massacred in the summer of 1988. A glance at the record of the Iranian regime&#039;s Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raisi At the age of 20, Raisi was appointed Karaj Prosecutor After a few months and after countless crimes in Karaj, Raisi was appointed as the Prosecutor of Hamedan In 1984, Raisi became the deputy head of the Central Revolutionary Prosecutor\u2019s Office Raisi played a pivotal role in the 1988 massacre of over 30,000 political prisoners These prisoners were mostly members and supporters of the People&#039;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) Raisi was a member of the Central Committee of the \u201cDeath Commissions\u201d which oversaw the 1988 massacre In 2015, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei appointed Raisi as caretaker of the Astan-e Quds Razavi (AQR) AQR is one of the largest financial institutions of the Middle East AQR funds terrorism and terrorist groups such as the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and its Quds Force On June 6, 2018, Khamenei appointed Ebrahim Raisi as Iran&#039;s Judiciary Chief on September 30, 2019, Raisi described his cruelty by saying: \u201cWe will not cut the fingers of those who are corrupt; we will cut off their entire hand.\u201d Khamenei appointed him as Judiciary Chief for two reasons: 1- To increase oppression and pursue the regime\u2019s contraction policy 2- To prepare him for his potential appointment as the regime\u2019s next Supreme Leader Read More: https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/IranNCR\/ https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy Subscribe to NCRI weekly newsletter t.ly\/MybJ\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:853px;margin:5px;\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Thirty years later, seven UN experts in a letter <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/significance-of-un-experts-letter-on-1988-massacre-victory-for-justice-seeking-movement\/\" rel=\"noopener\">underlined the 1988 massacre<\/a> \u201cmay amount to crimes against humanity,\u201d highlighting however that since the massacre, the perpetrators of this massacre enjoyed a \u201csystematic impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">They highlighted how \u201cMedia outlets in Iran frequently publish distressing statements from high-level officials glorifying the executions and describing the perpetrators as \u2018national heroes\u2019 and call any public criticism or documentation of the killings as support for terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The human rights experts also criticized how the world community\u2019s failure to \u201cact\u201d has had \u201ca devastating impact on the survivors and families as well as on the general situation of human rights in Iran and emboldened Iran to continue to conceal the fate of the victims and to maintain a strategy of deflection and denial that continue to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In December 2020, the European Union <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eeas.europa.eu\/headquarters\/headquarters-homepage\/90395\/stronger-eu-action-against-human-rights-violations_en\" rel=\"noopener\">approved<\/a> its new global sanctions regime against human rights violators and underlined that upholding \u201cthe universality and indivisibility of human rights and fundamental freedoms and respect for human dignity\u2019 is one of the core principles of the EU\u2019s external policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But when it comes to Iran, with its record-holder regime in terms of executions per capita, the EU\u2019s external policy\u2019s core principles seem to change, and they have always prioritized their economic interests over their human rights standards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">While the EU\u2019s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, on December 10, urged EU members to go \u201cbeyond condemnations\u201d and take action against human rights violations, he was scheduled to jointly chair a business forum with Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-world\/26715-a-look-at-the-record-of-iran-regime-foreign-minister-javad-zarif\" rel=\"noopener\">Mohammad Javad Zarif<\/a> on December 12.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This event was canceled due to the execution of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-human-rights\/iranian-resistance-urges-un-eu-states-especially-france-to-firmly-condemn-the-execution-of-ruhollah-zam\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruhollah Zam<\/a>, a French resident. The organizers underlined they are looking forward to holding another forum in the near future with Tehran. Thus, they confirmed parallel to the regime\u2019s persistence on human rights violations, the EU leaders persist in appeasing the ruling theocracy in Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Rouhani later confirmed this fact, saying Zam\u2019s execution would not affect the regime\u2019s relationship with the EU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The EU has always expressed concerns about the human rights violations in Iran, but Rouhani\u2019s remarks suggest that the EU\u2019s lack of action has made those probably genuine concerns worthless.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">EU leaders should end their wrong approach toward the regime in Tehran. The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/thinktank\/en\/document.html?reference=EPRS_BRI(2020)659402\" rel=\"noopener\">Magnitsky Act<\/a> allows the EU to apply sanctions when governments commit \u201cgenocide; crimes against humanity; torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment; slavery; extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions and killings; enforced disappearance of persons; and arbitrary arrests or detentions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Magnitsky Act allows the EU member states to apply sanctions \u201cin the event of other violations if they are widespread, systematic or otherwise of serious concern, in view of principles, such as respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The UN experts\u2019 letter called the 1988 massacre \u201ccrimes against humanity\u201d and a clear sign of extrajudicial executions and forced disappearance. Many international organizations such as Amnesty International and even the regime\u2019s state-run media have confirmed systematic human rights abuses in Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Thus, the EU has this momentum to act and for once go \u201cbeyond\u201d verbal condemnation of the Iranian regime and use the Magnitsky Act and impose sanctions on the Iranian regime and its authorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">All relations with Tehran must be contingent on an absolute halt of human rights abuses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least 33 people have been executed in Iran within the last 30 days.
