The rising trend of human rights abuses sounds the alarm for the international community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Iran is one of the main issues for the international community, but not its human rights abuses. World leaders, particularly the European Union, expect to revive Iran&#8217;s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. Yet, they refuse to address the regime\u2019s human rights violations and only express concern. This inaction has emboldened the regime to continue its human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On Sunday, the Iranian regime\u2019s security forces <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-human-rights\/defenseless-residents-of-iranshahr-attacked-suppressive-forces-use-birdshot-to-counter-rebellious-youths-resistance\/\" rel=\"noopener\">attacked<\/a> Iranian Baluch citizens in Sistan and Baluchistan province, southeast Iran. The Revolutionary Guards (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/inside-irans-army-of-terror-and-oppression-revolutionary-guards-irgc\/\" rel=\"noopener\">IRGC<\/a>) and police forces opened fire on innocent people over transporting a few gallons of gasoline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Recently the authorities extrajudicially sentenced political prisoner <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/prisoner-of-conscience-saeid-sangar-re-sentenced-after-20-years-in-prison-tortured-for-supporting-mek\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Saeid Sangar<\/a> to 11 months in prison in Urmia, northwest Iran. Mr. Sangar has served over 20 years of imprisonment for supporting the Iranian opposition, People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/i\/primer-the-history-the-peoples-mojahedin-organization-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">PMOI\/MEK<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>: Prisoner of Conscience Saeid Sangar Re-Sentenced After 20 Years in Prison, Tortured for Supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MEK?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MEK<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HumanRights?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HumanRights<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/v9Isd7d8hh\">https:\/\/t.co\/v9Isd7d8hh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1353689577643413504?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On Wednesday, Iran\u2019s brutal regime executed three prisoners in Zahedan, southeast Iran. On Saturday, the regime hanged another prisoner in Qom central prison.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime has executed at least 33 individuals starting at the end of December 2020. There have also been several political executions within the last few months. In September, Tehran hanged national wrestling champion <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/breaking-news-the-clerical-regime-in-iran-hanged-the-wrestler-navid-afkari\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Navid Afkari<\/a> for his role in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tQACfCy_X8Q?list=PL-I2iQQcsqbtrEcaEuiN6l3GOV_u86JQf\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 Iran protests<\/a>. News from Iran indicates that recently the authorities harassed Navid\u2019s coach, closing his gym. The regime\u2019s agents also destroyed Navid\u2019s tombstone recently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Iran executed Navid Afkari despite an international outcry. When in December the regime hanged <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-human-rights\/iranian-resistance-urges-un-eu-states-especially-france-to-firmly-condemn-the-execution-of-ruhollah-zam\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruhollah Zam<\/a>, a French resident, simultaneous with a business forum with EU leaders, it confirmed its utmost disregard for international human rights standards and EU leaders\u2019 \u201cconcern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Although the event was eventually canceled, organizers expressed their hope of holding another forum in the \u201cnear future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On the third anniversary of the Iran protests in January 2018, Amnesty International released a statement underlining how the international community\u2019s inaction has provided impunity to Iran\u2019s authorities to kill, detain and continue harassing activists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Amnesty highlighted that this \u201cimpunity emboldened the authorities to escalate the unlawful use of lethal force in Nov 2019 protests.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The impunity emboldened the authorities to escalate the unlawful use of lethal force in Nov 2019 protests. The cycle of bloodshed must not be allowed to continue. The international community must pressure Iran to end the recurrent pattern of using lethal force to crush protests.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Amnesty Iran (@AmnestyIran) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmnestyIran\/status\/1351873889119436800?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 20, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime has enjoyed this impunity since the 1980s. When in the summer of 1988, the authorities extrajudicially executed over <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" rel=\"noopener\">30,000 political prisoners<\/a>, and the world stayed silent, the mullahs found out they could continue their killing spree as long as the international community continues its silence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Seven United Nations experts <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/significance-of-un-experts-letter-on-1988-massacre-victory-for-justice-seeking-movement\/\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> a letter in December, sent initially to Iran\u2019s authorities in September, calling the 1988 massacre \u201ccrimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">They underlined how the perpetrators of this massacre hold top positions and enjoy \u201csystematic impunity.\u201d The regime\u2019s current Judiciary Chief <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/special-reports\/iran-who-is-ebrahim-raisi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebrahim Raisi<\/a> and Justice Minister Alireza Avail are two of the main perpetrators of the 1988 massacre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Their appointment as Iran\u2019s top government and Judiciary officials is not only a sign of the regime\u2019s disregard for human rights values but also indicates the regime has the intention of increasing human rights violations. This meeting comes in the wake of the recent adoption of a new global sanctions regime against human rights violators (a.k.a. Magnitsky Act) by all EU member states.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Foreign Affairs Council takes place while the regime in Tehran continues its human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">During today\u2019s meeting, EU leaders should not forget about the gross human rights violations in Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The trend of human rights abuses in Iran requires the EU to use its Magnitsky Act and impose sanctions on the regime.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The sanctions of this act are envisaged for human rights violations, including: \u201cgenocide; crimes against humanity; torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment; slavery; extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions and killings; enforced disappearance of persons; and arbitrary arrests or detentions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime\u2019s crimes fall under all the categories above, and responding to it has been long overdue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">EU leaders should now use their new global sanctions regime to target Tehran\u2019s regime and its officials for their human rights violations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Foreign Affairs Council should propose comprehensive sanctions on the regime for human rights abuses, ban the entry of all officials of Iran\u2019s genocidal regime to Europe, and freeze their assets. EU leaders should make all relations with Iran contingent on an immediate halt to human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Holding the regime to account and ending its systematic impunity over human rights violations will do justice to the Iranian people, and by doing it, the EU would be upholding its moral and legal obligations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Iranian regime has increased its human rights abuses within the last few weeks, with its officials explicitly calling for more human rights abuses.
