This execution confirms the mullahs\u2019 absolute disregard for international human rights standards, and the trend of human rights violations in Iran continues to get worse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-human-rights\/wrestler-mehdi-ali-hosseini-hanged-after-five-years-in-prison\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Mehdi Ali Hosseini\u2019s execution<\/a> comes a few months after the brutal hanging of Iran\u2019s national wrestling champion, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/breaking-news-the-clerical-regime-in-iran-hanged-the-wrestler-navid-afkari\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Navid Afkari<\/a>, despite international calls for a halt to his execution. The mere words of condemnation had no effect on the regime. In December, the security forces destroyed Navid\u2019s tombstone, thereby showing the regime had not regretted its crime. The recent arrest of Navid Afkari\u2019s coach and the closure of his gym are testaments to this fact.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime has executed over 35 prisoners within the last thirty days. The ongoing executions in Iran underline the mullahs will not change course in human rights violations.<br \/>\nOn Wednesday, the authorities hanged three prisoners in Zahedan, southeast Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime\u2019s human rights violations are not limited to prisons. On Sunday, the security forces opened fire on innocent people in Sistan and Baluchistan province because locals had transferred a few gallons of fuel.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jan. 24 &#8211; Iranshahr, SE <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> <br \/>Voice says security forces have attacked Baluch citizens over a few gasoline cans. <br \/>Reports say intelligence agents, the IRGC &amp; the police shot in the air and at residents who threw stones to defend themselves. No reports on casualties yet. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8uH4uDeWYO\">pic.twitter.com\/8uH4uDeWYO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Iran News Wire (@IranNW) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IranNW\/status\/1353360719446728706?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 24, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The international community should expect a rising number of executions and ongoing oppression in Iran. Apart from Tehran\u2019s need to control the restive society through intimidation, perpetrators of Iran\u2019s worst crimes against humanity hold top positions in the regime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime\u2019s current Chief Justice, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/special-reports\/iran-who-is-ebrahim-raisi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebrahim Raisi<\/a>, also known as the \u201changing judge,\u201d and Alireza Avaei, the regime\u2019s Minister of Justice, are perpetrators of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" rel=\"noopener\">1988 massacre<\/a> in Iran, which United Nations experts recently described as \u201ccrimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/significance-of-un-experts-letter-on-1988-massacre-victory-for-justice-seeking-movement\/\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> by the seven UN human rights experts was initially sent to the regime\u2019s authorities in September but was published in December.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The UN experts underlined that \u201cThere is a systemic impunity enjoyed by those who ordered and carried out the extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The letter further criticized the international community\u2019s failure to act, which rendered this systematic impunity to the regime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The UN experts underlined how this inaction \u201chad a devastating impact on the survivors and families as well as on the general situation of human rights in Iran and emboldened Iran to continue to conceal the fate of the victims and to maintain a strategy of deflection and denial that continue to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">During the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/anniversary-of-2018-iran-protests-and-international-communitys-obligations\/\" rel=\"noopener\">January 2018 uprising<\/a> in Iran, the regime forces killed dozens of protesters and imprisoned thousands. This killing spree was part of the \u201cdevastating impact\u201d of the 1988 massacre on Iran\u2019s human rights situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Again, the international community refused to act in 2018, emboldening them to continue targeting dissidents, enjoying their systematic impunity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In this regard, on the third anniversary of the Iran protests in January 2018, Amnesty International released a statement. Amnesty underlined how this \u201cimpunity emboldened the authorities to escalate the unlawful use of lethal force in Nov 2019 protests.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The impunity emboldened the authorities to escalate the unlawful use of lethal force in Nov 2019 protests. The international community, mainly the western governments, have been a \u201cvocal\u201d critic of Iran\u2019s human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Yet, actions by Western powers, mainly the European Union, have been limited to \u201ccondemnations\u201d and \u201cresolutions.\u201d Their eagerness to engage in business with the ruling theocracy in Tehran has allowed the mullahs to continue their medieval actions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On December 10, the EU\u2019s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, underlined that the EU \u201cshould go beyond\u201d resolutions and condemnations when it comes to human rights violations. Also, in December, EU leaders adopted a new global sanctions regime, targeting human rights violators worldwide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On December 12, Mr. Borrell was supposed to deliver a joint keynote speech with Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-world\/26715-a-look-at-the-record-of-iran-regime-foreign-minister-javad-zarif\" rel=\"noopener\">Mohammad Javad Zarif<\/a> in a business forum. This event was canceled in the last moments because the regime executed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-human-rights\/iranian-resistance-urges-un-eu-states-especially-france-to-firmly-condemn-the-execution-of-ruhollah-zam\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruhollah Zam<\/a>, a French resident, but it was too late.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">EU leaders had already \u201ccondemned\u201d Zam\u2019s death sentence, but holding an economic forum sent a signal to the regime that this execution would not affect the EU\u2019s relations with Tehran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">When some European leaders condemned Zam\u2019s execution, regime\u2019s foreign ministry summoned some of their ambassadors and condemned their reaction and mere the \u201ccondemnations\u201d of Zam\u2019s execution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In a nutshell, the EU\u2019s inaction regarding human rights violations in Iran had not only a devasting effect on the general human rights situation in Iran, but it has also made the EU\u2019s human rights policies and condemnations ineffective.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The newly adopted Magnitsky Act and the recent letter by UN experts, in addition to ongoing human rights violations in Iran, allows the European leaders to target the regime\u2019s authorities for their involvement in crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The EU should impose comprehensive sanctions on the regime\u2019s leaders and make all relations with Tehran contingent on a halt to human rights abuses in Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">By taking concrete actions regarding human rights violations in Iran, the EU could restore the effectiveness of its resolutions and condemnations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Iranian regime executed 30-year-old wrestler Mehdi Ali Hosseini in southwest Iran on Monday, despite an international outcry.
