European policymakers should pay attention to the trial\u2019s conclusion and consider the broader implications of what it has brought to light.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Those revelations fall into at least two distinct categories. On one hand, the details of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/iranian-diplomat-and-three-accomplices-on-trial-for-planned-bombing-of-a-massive-rally-in-paris\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Assadi<\/a> highlight the thinly-veiled threats to Western security which could emerge from the Iranian regime\u2019s institutions and personnel in any time or place. On the other hand, when that threat emerged in the summer of 2018, it revealed some of the Iranian regime\u2019s anxieties over significant threats to its own rule. These threats remain in and will ultimately result in democracy for the Iranian people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi\u2019s prospective target was the June 2018 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/free-iran-gathering-paris-2018\/\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFree Iran\u201d rally<\/a> and conference, which had been organized just outside Paris by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/about-ncri\/alternative\/\" rel=\"noopener\">NCRI<\/a>). Experts have testified that the device was powerful enough to kill countless attendees at the Free Iran rally. And had it been in close proximity to Mrs. Rajavi the death toll would have surely included some of the hundreds of European and American lawmakers and other dignitaries who had traveled there to show their support for the cause of Iranian democracy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Fortunately, European agencies were monitoring the journey of the explosive device, perhaps since before Assadi departed Iran with it, secure in the knowledge that his diplomatic passport would spare him from ordinary security screenings. It was confiscated and detonated on the day of the NCRI\u2019s event before Na\u2019ami and Saadouni were able to carry it from Belgium into France. Assadi was arrested the following day in Germany, before returning to Austria where he acted as the third secretary of Iran\u2019s embassy in Vienna, so he could better insist on his \u201cdiplomatic immunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The conclusive disruption of this terror plot was a major setback for the Iranian regime, and not the first of its kind. About three months earlier, another team of operatives was caught in the planning of a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/albania-s-police-chief-reveals-iranian-regime-terror-ring-targeting-pmoi-mek\/?preview_id=26792&amp;preview_nonce=536fd8115c&amp;post_format=standard&amp;_thumbnail_id=54220&amp;preview=true\" rel=\"noopener\">truck bomb attack<\/a> on Ashraf 3, the MEK members\u2019 compound in Albania, after they were relocated from Iraq where they had repeatedly fallen under attack by Iran-backed militant groups. The jail time requested for the three other terrorists (Assadi\u2019s hired accomplices) were 18 years for Amir Saadouni and Nasimeh Naami, and 15 years for Mehrdad Arefani. The prosecutors also requested the latter three to be stripped of their Belgian citizenships. The most important target in this foiled bomb plot was Iranian opposition President Maryam Rajavi, and Saadouni and Naami were told to install the bomb as close as possible to her, the prosecutors emphasized. All the collected evidence indicate Assadi commanded this bombing operation, the prosecutors highlighted, adding he should be condemned for our own security. Assadi played the main role in the attack targeting the Iranian opposition People&#039;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK), the prosecutors continued. Describing how Assadi was arrested in Germany, the prosecutors underscored he enjoys no diplomatic immunity. The plot for mass killing people is the reason why we are resorting to international law to deny him of diplomatic immunity. The Iranian regime not permitting Assadi to attend the first session of this trial, cooperate and answer questions indicates that Tehran was behind this terrorist operation. Since Assadi was working with the regime\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS), one cannot claim this operation was a one-man initiative and the entire regime was involved in this plot. Saadouni began cooperating with the MOIS back in 2004 for money and the pressure placed on his family. Saadouni and Naami significantly increased their ties with the MOIS from 2007 onward. From 2015 the couple is linked with Assadi under the alias \u201cDaniel\u201d and they were in constant contact with him until their arrest on June 30, 2018. The two had constantly travelled to Iran during this period and had met with Assadi in various countries such as Germany, Italy and Austria, receiving money for information. The places of their meetings were always specified by Assadi. Naami was fully trained on how to use the bomb, according to the prosecutors. Assadi went back to Iran several times during his effort to prepare all the necessities for this operation. Strong evidence in this regard was found in his vehicle and mobile phone indicating he went back to Iran once a month facilitating his preparations for the 2018 plot. On March 19, 2018, Naami and Saadouni began exchanging phone calls and emails with Assadi. Their last meeting was on June 28 at a pizzeria in Luxembourg where Naami received the bomb, a new SIM card and 18,000 euros, placing them all in her bag and receiving written training on how to use the bomb. Based on the indictment Mehrdad Arefani began cooperating with and was recruited by the MOIS when he was arrested in Iran back in 1981. Arefani was in constant contact with Assadi, obtaining footages and using equipment to gather information about the MEK for the MOIS. Arefani met with Assadi in various countries and received money from him. Arefani was missioned to control Naami and Saadouni properly carrying out the bomb plot at the scene. Assadi was waiting for Arefani to provide reports and control the scene through him. A successful attack on the Iranian Resistance\u2019s most symbolic international gathering might have restored a measure of credibility to the regime\u2019s international propaganda. But that plan and the Iranian people\u2019s quest for regime change continued.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In November 2019, Tehran disregarded the Iranian people\u2019s worsening economic conditions in order to announce an increase in government-set gasoline prices. Immediately thereafter, citizens from all walks of life <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-november-2019-uprising-and-its-amplifications\/\" rel=\"noopener\">poured into the streets<\/a> of over 200 cities and towns, rekindling the slogans from the previous uprising in the process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This time, the regime responded with even more ruthless violence, killing at least <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/iran-protests\/27081-over-1-500-killed-in-the-iranian-people-s-nationwide-uprising-names-of-504-martyrs-released\" rel=\"noopener\">1,500 peaceful protesters<\/a>. But even that was only enough to keep the unrest more-or-less under control for about two months, until the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/inside-irans-army-of-terror-and-oppression-revolutionary-guards-irgc\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Revolutionary Guard<\/a> shot down a commercial airliner in January 2020 and the people rose up once again to demand accountability for the entire regime.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If the Iranian people are willing to issue such demands while suffering under the rule of theocrats who very recently killed thousands of their compatriots, it is imperative for the international community to demand similar accountability from the regime for its export of terrorism. In fact, the recurring unrest inside Iran should inspire European and American policymakers to reevaluate their understanding of what can be accomplished by confronting Iran\u2019s malign activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Certainly, that confrontation is valuable in its own right, for the sake of discouraging more of the same. As long as the threat of further uprisings looms over Tehran, the regime is sure to dispatch other figures like Assadi to make additional attempts on the lives of those who are leading the pro-democracy Resistance movement. And the details highlighted in Assadi\u2019s trial suggest that a network for such operations is already in place among Iranian embassies and other institutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">By shutting down those institutions and isolating the Iranian regime on the world stage, the nations of Europe will be safeguarding themselves against the very real possibility of being caught up in the regime\u2019s escalating terrorist threats and conflict with Iranian people. But one way or another, those nations will eventually have to choose, and by acting against Iran\u2019s terrorist networks now, they may be able to avoid more dangerous entanglements down the line.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Since the beginning of 2018, it has been clear that the clerical regime is vulnerable at home. When it is equally clear that that regime is isolated abroad, the domestic push for regime change will only grow in both its intensity and the breadth of its support.
