Through this execution, the regime fully displayed its insecurity and disregard for human rights standards. Ali Hosseini was another athlete added to the list of national athletes the regime has executed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Similarly, in September, the regime executed Iran\u2019s national wrestling champion, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/breaking-news-the-clerical-regime-in-iran-hanged-the-wrestler-navid-afkari\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Navid Afkari<\/a>, despite international efforts to prevent his execution. Navid was arrested during a second wave of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/anniversary-of-2018-iran-protests-and-international-communitys-obligations\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran protests<\/a> in 2018 in southwest Iran, along with his brothers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">While the world community condemned Navid Afkari\u2019s execution, the regime once again proved its disregard for condemnations by destroying Navid\u2019s tombstone recently and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IranNW\/status\/1353759122001448960\" rel=\"noopener\">arresting his coach<\/a> a few days ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Navid And Mehdi are among scores of athletes executed by the mullahs\u2019 regime in Iran. Unlike other countries where national athletes are endorsed and supported by the ruling system, the regime in Tehran has arrested, tortured and executed many athletes for their political or social beliefs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Tehran executed Houshang Montazer-ol Zohour, a member of Iran\u2019s wrestling team, in 1981 for his support for the Iranian opposition, People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/i\/primer-the-history-the-peoples-mojahedin-organization-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">PMOI\/MEK<\/a>). Houshang was the national heavyweight wrestling champion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Iranian regime also executed Habib Khabiri, the captain of Iran\u2019s national soccer team, in 1981 for his connections with the MEK.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/48-iranian-national-sports-champions-members-of-ncri-call-to-stop-the-execution-of-navid-afkari-2\/\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> to the International Olympic Committee before Navid Afkari\u2019s execution, 48 renowned Iranian national athletes and heroes, including Mr. Moslem Eskandar Filabi, winner of 17 medals from national and international wrestling events, underlined the regime\u2019s use of violence against Iranian athletes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>: 48 Iranian National Sports Champions, Members of NCRI Call To Stop the Execution of Navid Afkari<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SaveNavidAfkari?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SaveNavidAfkari<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StopExecutionsInIran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#StopExecutionsInIran<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5QMdkvtQTp\">https:\/\/t.co\/5QMdkvtQTp<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9eHXBLkWOE\">pic.twitter.com\/9eHXBLkWOE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1301172403242926085?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 2, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cExecution of Athletes, Champions and Olympians in Iran by the ruling regime is not new. Many Athletes have been executed to date only because they had responded to the voices of their conscience and their Athletic duties when it comes to oppression of people by the regime. Thus, the mullahs will continue their human rights abuses and execute national figures to intimidate the public.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The rising number of executions in Iran also suggests a \u201csystematic impunity,\u201d as highlighted in the UN experts\u2019 letter, which allows the regime to continue its killing spree.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In other words, since the international community failed in addressing the regime\u2019s crimes in the early 1980s, mainly the 1988 massacre, the regime has been emboldened to continue its crimes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The UN experts\u2019 letter also highlights that how the international community\u2019s failure to act \u201chad a devastating impact on the survivors and families as well as on the general situation of human rights in Iran and emboldened Iran to continue to conceal the fate of the victims and to maintain a strategy of deflection and denial that continue to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The recent executions in Iran and massacre of 1500 protesters during the 2019 Iran protests are some of the \u201cdevastating\u201d results of the world\u2019s inaction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">When it comes to human rights violations, all western government, mainly the European Union, \u201ccondemn\u201d the human rights situation in Iran. This new sanctions regime allows the EU to target those involved in crimes against humanity, extrajudicial executions and arbitrary arrests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The crimes by the regime in Tehran, whether the recent executions or the 1988 massacre, require the EU member states to target the regime\u2019s leaders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The recent execution of Mehdi Ali Hosseini despite international condemnations necessitates world leaders to take concrete actions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The EU should use the Magnitsky Act and impose sanctions on the regime\u2019s leaders and make all relations with Tehran conditioned on an immediate halt to human rights violations by the regime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">EU leaders should also lead an international effort to investigate the 1988 massacre, thus not allowing the regime to make executions in Iran \u201cnormal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iran&rsquo;s clerical regime executed wrestler Mehdi Ali Hosseini on Monday despite an international outcry and condemnations.
