Friday, November 27, 2020 Belgian prosecutors requested a 20-year sentence for Iranian regime diplomat-terrorist Assadollah Assadi following its four-hour indictment. The jail time requested for the three other terrorists (Assadi\u2019s hired accomplices) were 18 years for Amir Saadouni and Nasimeh Naami, and 15 years for Mehrdad Arefani. The prosecutors also requested the latter three to be stripped of their Belgian citizenships. The most important target in this foiled bomb plot was Iranian opposition President Maryam Rajavi, and Saadouni and Naami were told to install the bomb as close as possible to her, the prosecutors emphasized. All the collected evidence indicate Assadi commanded this bombing operation, the prosecutors highlighted, adding he should be condemned for our own security. Assadi played the main role in the attack targeting the Iranian opposition People&#039;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK), the prosecutors continued. Describing how Assadi was arrested in Germany, the prosecutors underscored he enjoys no diplomatic immunity. The plot for mass killing people is the reason why we are resorting to international law to deny him of diplomatic immunity. The Iranian regime not permitting Assadi to attend the first session of this trial, cooperate and answer questions indicates that Tehran was behind this terrorist operation. Since Assadi was working with the regime\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS), one cannot claim this operation was a one-man initiative and the entire regime was involved in this plot. Saadouni began cooperating with the MOIS back in 2004 for money and the pressure placed on his family. Saadouni and Naami significantly increased their ties with the MOIS from 2007 onward. From 2015 the couple is linked with Assadi under the alias \u201cDaniel\u201d and they were in constant contact with him until their arrest on June 30, 2018. The two had constantly travelled to Iran during this period and had met with Assadi in various countries such as Germany, Italy and Austria, receiving money for information. The places of their meetings were always specified by Assadi. Naami was fully trained on how to use the bomb, according to the prosecutors. Assadi went back to Iran several times during his effort to prepare all the necessities for this operation. Strong evidence in this regard was found in his vehicle and mobile phone indicating he went back to Iran once a month facilitating his preparations for the 2018 plot. On March 19, 2018, Naami and Saadouni began exchanging phone calls and emails with Assadi. Their last meeting was on June 28 at a pizzeria in Luxembourg where Naami received the bomb, a new SIM card and 18,000 euros, placing them all in her bag and receiving written training on how to use the bomb. Based on the indictment Mehrdad Arefani began cooperating with and was recruited by the MOIS when he was arrested in Iran back in 1981. Arefani was in constant contact with Assadi, obtaining footages and using equipment to gather information about the MEK for the MOIS. Arefani met with Assadi in various countries and received money from him. Arefani was missioned to control Naami and Saadouni properly carrying out the bomb plot at the scene. Had those operatives not been intercepted on their way from Belgium to the French border, it is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">very likely<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that the bomb would have killed some of the dozens of European scholars and lawmakers who were in attendance and were seated near Mrs. Rajavi.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Of course, the successful detonation of the bomb would have also resulted in untold numbers of casualties among the general population. It <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is generally understood<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that the 500 grams of TATP confiscated from Assadi\u2019s agents was sufficiently explosive to kill hundreds of people in the crowded convention space. And more to the point, they are all long overdue. So, for that matter, is a prosecution of the sort that is currently wrapping up in Belgium. Although\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/iran-regime-diplomat-on-trial-tahar-boumedras-statement-to-the-court\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Assadollah\u00a0Assadi<\/a> is by no means the first Iranian diplomat to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">engage\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in terrorist activities carried out by either the Iranian regime or its militant proxies, he is nonetheless the first such individual to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">actually face<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0charges in Europe for that involvement. His arrest seemingly came as a surprise both to Assadi himself and to leading Iranian officials. Throughout the two-year investigation leading up to the trial, Belgium has repeatedly come under pressure to release him in accordance with an absurdly broad Iranian concept of diplomatic immunity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That claim of immunity is notably hypocritical coming from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the regime\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0authorities, who famously do not\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recognize<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0common international principles such as dual citizenship, and thus routinely refuse consular assistance to persons who are alleged to be detained\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on the basis of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0nothing other than their connections to the Western world.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0But the hypocrisy does not end there. Tehran has also complained that Assadi\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was granted<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0too little visitation with his attorney, whereas\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in Iran<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, \u201cnational security cases\u201d proceed without any access to legal counsel whatsoever, or \u2013 as in one very recent case \u2013 without any trial whatsoever.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assadi has had his day in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">court or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> would have if he had not refused to appear in person at his trial. Now it is time for the international community to take further steps that expose the dangerous imbalance between how Tehran treats\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and how it expects to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be treated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0by them. The regime\u2019s defiant attitude is a sign that longstanding Western policies of appeasement have left the mullahs with a strong sense of impunity, which in turn has emboldened them toward more and more provocative actions, culminating in a terror plot that might have killed dozens of prominent European citizens.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That tendency toward appeasement may not be readily apparent to all readers, given that Tehran has frequently been the target of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oral<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0condemnation. But verbal criticisms have little value\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in their own\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">right and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0must ultimately be backed up by a demonstration of real consequences that may follow upon repetition of the behavior that has been rightly condemned. And in Iran\u2019s case, those consequences have been few and far between. Sometimes, European authorities have gone out of their way to make sure Iran avoids them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1990, a group of gunmen ambushed and murdered the NCRI\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">representative in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Switzerland<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Kazem Rajavi. Two years later, two members of the hit team\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were arrested<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in France.
