Two of those operatives were caught with 500 grams of the high-explosive TATP, which they were attempting to carry from Belgium into France, where the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) was holding its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/free-iran-gathering-paris-2018\/\" rel=\"noopener\">annual rally<\/a> for the cause of Iranian democracy. Their handler, the third counselor at the Iranian embassy in Vienna, had reportedly handed off the material and a detonator to them after personally smuggling them into Europe while traveling on a diplomatic passport.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The latter individual, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/iranian-diplomat-and-three-accomplices-on-trial-for-planned-bombing-of-a-massive-rally-in-paris\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Assadollah Assadi<\/a>, is not the first Iranian diplomat to be accused of ties to terrorism, but he is the first to actually face charges as a result. Following more than two years of investigation, he and his co-conspirators formally went on trial in late November, and a verdict in their case is now due on Thursday, February 4, 2021. Information about their terror plot has continued to leak to the public throughout the proceedings, and it has provided a better understanding both of the potential impact and of the likely motivating factors. The information suggests the mullahs\u2019 network of espionage and terrorism is much wider in Europe than it appears. Assadi was arrested in July 2018 after delivering a bomb to a terrorist couple, Nasimeh Na\u2019ami and Amir Saadouni, in Luxembourg and tasking them to plant the bomb in the \u201cFree Iran\u201d gathering of the Iranian opposition in Villepinte, north of Paris, France. Germany\u2019s police arrested Assadi on July 1 before he could enter Austria, where he served as the third secretary of Iran\u2019s embassy. The German authorities found a green notebook in Assadi\u2019s car with important information about the 2018 bombing plot, Assadi\u2019s acts and travels, and the amounts of money he had given to different Iranians. According to the Deutsche Welle Farsi, the German Federal Criminal Court (BKA) is investigating Assadi\u2019s activities on a mission from the German Attorney General. The question is: Has Assadi commanded a large network of people tasked with different missions? The information in his notebook suggests Assadi had 144 visits to Germany. One of Assadi\u2019s notes refers to the Islamic Center of Hamburg. The BKA recognizes this center as one of the regime\u2019s espionage and export of fundamentalism centers. Another issue that caught the attention of the police is that Assadi had several receipts with him, indicating cash payments he made to some people. Recipients\u2019 identities have not yet been determined, since they have used common Iranian names. One of these individuals received 2500 Euros, another 5000 Euros, and another person confirmed the receipt of a laptop. According to Deutsche Welle, the BKA authorities deduce that these payments could be the salaries of the regime\u2019s agents. According to the Belgian prosecutors\u2019 indictment, during the last meeting between Assadi and the couple on June 28, 2018, in Luxembourg, Na\u2019ami received the bomb, a new SIM card, and 180,000 euros. On June 26, 19,000 euros was wired to the couple\u2019s account. Another Assadi\u2019s agent Mehrdad Arefani who was arrested during the bomb plot made 62 cash deposits in 2017 and 2018, with a total of 28,409Euros, into his accounts. In fact, the regime used the European Union\u2019s inaction to create and lead a large network of spies and terrorists across Europe. The 2018 foiled bomb plot is only the tip of the iceberg of the Iranian regime\u2019s network in Europe. Now the key questions are: Who are those agents mentioned in Assadi\u2019s notebook? Which diplomat has Mohammad Javad Zarif appointed to run the network instead of Asadi? As long as the regime has its embassies and so-called cultural centers remain open, and its officials can travel to Europe, the regime will maintain its network of terrorism and espionage in Europe. EU leaders should expel the regime\u2019s agents, close its embassies and the so-called cultural centers, and ban the entry of all Iranian officials to Europe for their role in terrorism. This erases any doubt that might have previously existed about how the plot might have affected Western nations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Throughout the event, Mrs. Rajavi was often in close proximity to high-profile political dignitaries from around the world, including dozens of Americans and Europeans. If the terrorists had fulfilled their main objective, it is virtually certain that some of those lawmakers and foreign policy experts would have been among the collateral damage. The terrorists were no doubt aware of the potential impact, as at least one of them had reportedly traveled to the target venue in advance, for reconnaissance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The prosecutors in Assadi\u2019s case have been unequivocal in their statements describing the principal defendant as someone who was acting in the name of the Iranian regime and upon orders from high in the regime\u2019s leadership. In fact, the plans would only have moved forward with input from both the regime\u2019s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In the presence of all these details, it is natural to wonder why Iran\u2019s leadership was willing to embrace this course of action, knowing full well that Assadi\u2019s capture would expose the regime to risk of an international incident. To find the answer, it is necessary to look to the circumstances inside Iran before the time when the plot went into motion. While tensions between Tehran and the West had certainly begun to escalate by the summer of 2018, the terror plot was without question the result of months of planning, and thus were part of a response to preexisting conflict between the regime and domestic supporters of the Iranian Resistance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Maryam Rajavi and the NCRI have long been a major focus of the regime\u2019s wrath, but its obsession with stamping out the Resistance expanded at the beginning of 2018 when the regime found itself rocked by a spontaneous, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/anniversary-of-2018-iran-protests-and-international-communitys-obligations\/\" rel=\"noopener\">nationwide uprising<\/a> which popularized explicit calls for regime change and democratic governance. Once the uprising exposed the falsity of that narrative, it was virtually impossible for regime authorities to put the genie back in the bottle. By the middle of 2018, it was clear that the only way Tehran could reclaim its former image of strength was by turning its fantasy of a ruined Resistance movement into reality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">After Assadi\u2019s arrest signaled the failure of that effort, activists throughout Iran continued to promote the uprising\u2019s anti-government slogans, culminating in another, larger uprising in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-november-2019-uprising-and-its-amplifications\/\" rel=\"noopener\">November 2019<\/a>. That movement encompassed nearly 200 cities and towns before being suppressed by institutions like the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which opened fire on crowds of protesters and killed an estimated 1,500. But even this failed to bring a conclusive end to the unrest, which flared up again just two months later, in the wake of the IRGC\u2019s missile strike on a commercial airliner over Tehran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In light of the high political price the regime had to pay for this terrorist act, it stands to reason that the regime was willing to pay this price to destroy or exert a blow to the Iranian resistance and the MEK. This, in itself, is indicative of the significance of Iranian resistance, and the MEK and its existential threat to the regime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If the EU turns a blind eye to the regime\u2019s terrorism and deals with this case as a trial for rouge individuals, the regime will once again attempt to carry out more terrorist acts in Europe. To prevent this, the international community must make it absolutely clear that Tehran has to pay serious consequences for this act.
