With an additional 225 executions in 2020, the regime holds the record as the world\u2019s top executioner per capita. The rising trend of executions in Iran shows the regime\u2019s disregard for human rights standards and that its leaders enjoy a \u201csystematic impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This systematic impunity, mainly due to the international community\u2019s inaction, has not just served the regime in committing crimes against humanity in Iran. The recent conviction in Belgium of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/guilty-verdict-for-iran-regimes-terrorist-isnt-enough-to-eliminate-threats-to-europe\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Assadollah Assadi<\/a>, the regime\u2019s diplomat terrorist who tried to bomb the opposition rally in France in 2018, is a testament to this fact that mullahs\u2019 crimes are not limited to Iran and its borders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A Belgian court, after two-and-a-half years of investigations, found Assadi and his three accomplices guilty and convicted them to 70 years in prison, rejecting Assadi\u2019s \u201cdiplomatic immunity.\u201d The court ruling was also a major blow to the \u201cimpunity\u201d that the mullahs in Tehran have been enjoying due to the international community\u2019s inaction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This fact was also confirmed by Dr. Tahar Boumedra, former chief of the Human Rights Office of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and legal expert. He asserted that on Thursday, \u201cthe truth, the rule of law, justice, have prevailed over impunity. Impunity has failed. Through this verdict, it\u2019s not only Assadi who has been convicted. It\u2019s the whole regime. The whole regime has been behind crimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As Mr. Boumedra underlined, the undeniable evidence, and the regime\u2019s efforts to have Assadi released by claiming he has \u201cdiplomatic immunity,\u201d showed that the entirety of the regime, mainly the Foreign Ministry led by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-world\/26715-a-look-at-the-record-of-iran-regime-foreign-minister-javad-zarif\" rel=\"noopener\">Mohammad Javad Zarif<\/a>, was behind the 2018 foiled bombing.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ex-UN Official Tahar Boumedra: Through this verdict, it\u2019s not only Assadi who has been convicted. Assadi&#8217;s conviction showed that the mullahs advance their foreign policy on the basis of terrorism, and they advance terrorism under the cover of foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi&#8217;s trial and conviction also showed that all the regime\u2019s factions are united and collaborate with each other in carrying out terrorist crimes. In other words, when it comes to savagery and pure evil, &#8220;moderates&#8221; and &#8220;hardliners&#8221; constantly try to upstage one another.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">When it comes to human rights violations, the regime\u2019s factions collaborate on how to oppress society. The rising number of executions in Iran, under the so-called \u201cmoderate\u201d President Hassan Rouhani and the killing of over <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/iran-protests\/27081-over-1-500-killed-in-the-iranian-people-s-nationwide-uprising-names-of-504-martyrs-released\" rel=\"noopener\">1500 protesters<\/a> during the November 2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-november-2019-uprising-and-its-amplifications\/\" rel=\"noopener\">uprising<\/a> are testaments to the regime\u2019s systematic human rights violations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In other words, as Mr. Boumedra said, \u201cThe whole regime has been behind crimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The entire regime was behind the 1988 massacre of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" rel=\"noopener\">30,000 political prisoners<\/a>. In a letter published in December, seven UN human rights experts underlined that the 1988 massacre \u201cmay amount to crimes against humanity.\u201d They underlined how the perpetrators of this crimes enjoy \u201csystematic impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime\u2019s current Judiciary Chief <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/special-reports\/iran-who-is-ebrahim-raisi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebrahim Raisi<\/a> and the Justice Minister Alireza Avaei are both members of the so-called \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iran1988.org\/perpetrators\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Death Commissions<\/a>,\u201d which were responsible for carrying out the 1988 massacre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi\u2019s conviction could set a precedent for the international community of how to address crimes committed by the Iranian regime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As Mr. Boumedra said, the \u201cverdict is a very good example and a source of inspiration for the United Nations. But they should know that giving concessions to the regime will only allow the regime to further pursue its nuclear ambitions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In other words, efforts to contain and control the regime\u2019s the nuclear program will not succeed unless they are coupled and linked with a firm stance against the regime&#8217;s human rights violations and state-sponsored terrorism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As Mr. Lars Rise, former Norwegian MP, said on Thursday, \u201cHow come every European leader wants to shake Zarif\u2019s hand? After receiving today\u2019s verdict, all European leaders have to add an arrest warrant for Zarif to their to-do list. How is it possible for anyone to continue to work with the regime as if nothing happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi\u2019s conviction in addition to numerous developments in recent months such as the UN experts&#8217; letter have formed a momentum for the European leaders, mainly Mr. Borrell, to set the record straight and choose the right policy. The Belgian Judiciary has fulfilled its task, and the ball is now in the court of EU leaders to act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As Mrs. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/biography\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, the opposition President-elect, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/item\/maryam-rajavi-conviction-regime-terrorist-diplomat-belgian-court-antwerp-represents-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on Thursday, the EU should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cShut down the regime\u2019s embassies and other centers in Europe, all of which are hubs for terrorism.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Hold the regime\u2019s Foreign Minister accountable. It was proven that his ministry, and the embassy and diplomat under his control, were involved in planning and preparing for the potential mass slaughter.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Designate the entire Ministry of Intelligence and the IRGC as terrorist entities.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Prosecute the regime\u2019s leaders who are in charge and are the masterminds of its terrorism infrastructure. They must face justice.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">The mullahs\u2019 intelligence agents and mercenaries under any cover must be prosecuted and expelled. Granting them refugee status or citizenship must be considered a red line.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Any form of renormalization of diplomatic relations with the regime must be made contingent on dismantling its terrorism infrastructure and on the observance of the human rights of the people of Iran.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Iranian regime executed at least 27 prisoners in January.
