State media quoted him Mahmoud Alavi as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/nuclear\/irans-minister-of-intelligence-contradicts-longstanding-claim-of-peaceful-nuclear-intentions\/\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a> that if Western powers \u201cpush Iran in that direction, then it wouldn\u2019t be Iran\u2019s fault\u201d if it acquires nuclear weapons capability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime\u2019s official position has always been that it has no intentions for its nuclear material other than power generation and scientific research. But Alavi\u2019s statement acknowledges that the regime has been deceiving the world about its nuclear ambitions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Certainly, there are lessons in this incident for those policymakers who are responsible for formulating American and European responses to Iran\u2019s nuclear provocations. But there are also broader lessons to be learned from it by those who have influence over Western reactions to any of Iran\u2019s other malign activities. Alavi\u2019s recent statements say as much about the underlying patterns of Iranian propaganda as they do about the truths that that propaganda barely conceals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In deliberately shifting away from the narrative of an exclusively peaceful nuclear program, Alavi revealed Iran\u2019s tactic of altering its self-representation according to the practical needs of the moment.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>&#39;s Minister of Intelligence and Security Mahmoud Alavi frankly threatens the international community about the proliferation of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NuclearWeapons?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NuclearWeapons<\/a>.<br \/>&quot;We do not pursue nuclear weapons, but if foreigners pushed us, this is their fault,&quot; he said in an interview with state-run TV. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qFEZgKWKNW\">pic.twitter.com\/qFEZgKWKNW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; IranNewsUpdate (@IranNewsUpdate1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IranNewsUpdate1\/status\/1359111187846352897?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 9, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In the weeks prior to Alavi\u2019s threat, Tehran was apparently depending upon the newly-inaugurated Biden administration to quickly suspend the economic sanctions its predecessor had re-imposed. By insisting that its intentions had been peaceful, the regime surely expected to promote that outcome. But the US insisted upon Iran resuming compliance with the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal before receiving any sanctions relief, the regime began try to exert more obvious pressure on the new US administration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Alavi\u2019s threat was not the only example of this shift. Among the latest such provocations was the announcement of the regime\u2019s intention to produce uranium metal, a substance with virtually no function other than as part of the core of a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Intelligence Minister\u2019s statement was noteworthy for the rarity of its positive reference to potential weapons development. It was also noteworthy for its attempt at playing both sides of the issue. Alavi prefaced his comments by declaring that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/inside-source-reports\/iran-s-nuclear-weapons-program\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran\u2019s nuclear program<\/a> is peaceful and that nuclear weapons are banned by a fatwa from the regime\u2019s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. But he immediately undermined that point by suggesting that the ban could be quickly reversed in response to the perception of foreign \u201cpressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In a single breath, Alavi gave voice to the inherent untrustworthiness of official Iranian pronouncement on virtually any issue, especially issues of importance to the regime\u2019s foreign adversaries. Incidents like this are by no means an isolated incident, and so they ought to inspire those adversaries to apply extreme skepticism to all public statements by all public officials. More than that, they ought to prompt those same adversaries to be aware of Iran\u2019s reliance on self-serving propaganda, and to be on guard against less obvious outlets for it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Serious critics of the Iranian regime have been warning about this phenomenon practically since the advent of the Iranian regime. In so doing, they have pointed not only to the mullahs\u2019 tight control over media inside the country but also to a vast network of foreign proxies and friendly journalists that is responsible for spreading the regime\u2019s talking points far beyond its own borders.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The function of this network is rarely as obvious as one might assume. Often, its outlets and operatives manage to fly under the radar by masking their true affiliations behind occasional criticism of the Iranian regime. Using such tactics, Iranian regime\u2019s agents and apologists may not convince the international community to believe in the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program; but they may convince Western leaders to embrace other narratives that compel them to adopt conciliatory strategies like that which was on display in the 2015 nuclear deal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">That agreement was rightly criticized for its weak and temporary restrictions on Iran\u2019s nuclear development, as well as for its failure to address related issues like the regime\u2019s ballistic missile program and its penchant for destructive interference in the affairs of surrounding countries. But for many of the supporters of that agreement, it presumably represented the only viable option for constraining Iran\u2019s progress toward a nuclear weapon, short of escalating the risk of a drawn-out military conflict.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The problem with this notion is that it depends upon a false perception of the Iranian regime as a government that is politically stable, appreciably strong, and lacking in serious domestic challenges to its hold on power. To a great extent, that perception has been created over many years by Iranian influence operations, the prime objective of which was to downplay and delegitimize an organized Iranian Resistance movement that has been gaining traction both at home and abroad since very soon after the mullahs\u2019 co-opted a popular revolution in 1979.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As the main target of those operations, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/about-ncri\/alternative\/\" rel=\"noopener\">NCRI<\/a>) has been working tirelessly over the years to expose the tactics that Iranian authorities rely upon in order to project a false image of their own strength while manipulating Western counterparts into adopting and defending conciliatory policies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lyte-wrapper\" title=\"Iran&amp;#039;s disinformation campaign against the MEK via &amp;#039;friendly journalists&amp;#039;\" style=\"width:853px;max-width:100%;margin:5px;\"><div class=\"lyMe\" id=\"WYL_AsxtNqIMoG4\" itemprop=\"video\" itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/VideoObject\"><div><meta itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FAsxtNqIMoG4%2Fhqdefault.jpg\" \/><meta itemprop=\"embedURL\" content=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AsxtNqIMoG4\" \/><meta itemprop=\"duration\" content=\"PT16M7S\" \/><meta itemprop=\"uploadDate\" content=\"2020-09-09T15:32:21Z\" \/><\/div><div id=\"lyte_AsxtNqIMoG4\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FAsxtNqIMoG4%2Fhqdefault.jpg\" class=\"pL\"><div class=\"tC\"><div class=\"tT\" itemprop=\"name\">Iran&#039;s disinformation campaign against the MEK via &#039;friendly journalists&#039;<\/div><\/div><div class=\"play\"><\/div><div class=\"ctrl\"><div class=\"Lctrl\"><\/div><div class=\"Rctrl\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><noscript><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/AsxtNqIMoG4\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FAsxtNqIMoG4%2F0.jpg\" alt=\"Iran&amp;#039;s disinformation campaign against the MEK via &amp;#039;friendly journalists&amp;#039;\" width=\"853\" height=\"460\" \/><br \/>Watch this video on YouTube<\/a><\/noscript><meta itemprop=\"description\" content=\"On June 25, 2020, a German court ruled in favor of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, in a case challenging the content of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) article purporting to describe the situation of PMOI\/MEK members in Ashraf-3 in Albania, which houses members of the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran(PMOI-MEK). Both the compound, Ashraf 3, and the MEK have been targets of extensive disinformation campaigns by the Iranian regime. The same court ordered a similar case for another news publication, Der Spiegel, in March 2019. That publication, too, published an article that conveyed similar allegations against the MEK in general, and Ashraf-3 in Albania in particular. Both Der Spiegel and FAZ provided a platform for individuals who presented themselves as former MEK members and portrayed themselves as having fled their Albanian residence in the wake of mistreatment at the hands of MEK leadership in Albania. But the NCRI\u2019s legal challenge identified the originators of these allegations as operatives for, or collaborators with, Iran\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS). In the past two years, similar allegations from the same sources have been published in Britain\u2019s Channel 4, Al-Jazeera English, BBC, and The New York Times. This has been an organized campaign by the Iranian regime to demonize and discredit the MEK BUT WHY? While the Iranian regime\u2019s constantly been engaging in spreading misinformation about the Iranian opposition, these efforts took on a new scale as popular protests began emerging across Iran at the end of 2017, in which were chanted MEK slogans such as \u201cdeath to the dictator.\u201d These slogans gained popular support in Iran despite the regime\u2019s disinformation campaign against MEK &amp; NCRI. The Regime Change message of the 2018 uprising reflected the MEK\u2019s platform, while its spontaneous spread reflected a high level of organization that is only possible in the presence of a well-developed network of MEK activists. This is what the regime fears most and why it goes to great lengths to distract people from joining the resistance. In January 2018, the regime\u2019s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei publicly accused the MEK of planning and facilitating the 2018 uprising. That in turn set the stage for another nationwide protest in November 2019, which once again showcased MEK leadership and explicit calls for regime change. Having no way out of crises, the Iranian regime sees no other way out of its current dilemma than engaging in a reprehensible campaign of demonization of the MEK. The goals are: - Discrediting a viable alternative to the ruling theocracy that has succeeded both in organizing protests within Iran, and in disrupting the Iranian regime\u2019s terrorist activities and destructive policies. - Preparing the ground for terrorist attacks justified by such propaganda. The flip side of this coin is the forced televised confessions of prisoners to discredit the resistance against the regime. The Associated Press in a report published on June 25, 2020, wrote: \u201cstate television has broadcast the suspected coerced confessions of at least 355 people over the last decade as a means to both suppress dissent and frighten activists in the Islamic Republic on behalf of security services.\u201d In a nutshell, terrified of the enthusiasm exhibited by young people towards the MEK and the cause of regime change, and International support for the resistance, the regime desperately needs to either eliminate or isolate the democratic resistance movement, by fake news and demonizing campaign. #Iran #MEK #PMOI #NCRI #Rajavi #Mojahedin #Mujahedeen #Ashraf-3 #Ashraf #Albania Read More: https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/IranNCR\/ https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy Subscribe to NCRI weekly newsletter t.ly\/MybJ\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:853px;margin:5px;\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The NCRI has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-resistance\/iran-regimes-terrorism-and-propaganda-go-hand-in-hand-and-both-must-be-shut-down\/\" rel=\"noopener\">highlighted<\/a> the work of Iranian intelligence operatives and lobbies outside of Iran which have been pursuing Iranian regime\u2019s \u201cpsychological warfare\u201d against the opposition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">That psychological warfare has only grown more intense in recent years, as evidenced by an upsurge in the amount of state propaganda targeting the NCRI and its main constituent group, the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/i\/primer-the-history-the-peoples-mojahedin-organization-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">PMOI-MEK<\/a>). Interestingly, this phenomenon was explicitly highlighted by the Intelligence Minister within the same statement that acknowledged the falsity of the regime\u2019s peaceful nuclear narrative. Alavi boasted about the number of \u201cfilms and serials\u201d that his Ministry had recently produced in order to \u201ceducate the public\u201d and \u201cprotect society against espionage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In other words, Alavi confirmed via state media on Tuesday that the regime is aggressively spreading propaganda against its main opposition, the MEK. It is doing the same on a global scale, using established networks which the international community has yet to root out.
