The letter sheds light upon the likely operations of a network of operatives in Europe, the existence of which was exposed by the landmark court case involving the former third counsellor at the Iranian embassy in Vienna, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/guilty-verdict-for-iran-regimes-terrorist-isnt-enough-to-eliminate-threats-to-europe\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Assadollah Assadi<\/a>. It also confirms key facts behind longstanding warnings about the Iranian regime\u2019s efforts to influence Western media and demonizing its main opposition group the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/i\/primer-the-history-the-peoples-mojahedin-organization-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">PMOI-MEK<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi was prosecuted alongside three co-defendants for their efforts to set off explosives at an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/paris-free-iran-with-hundreds-of-top-personalities-lawmakers-and-elected-representatives-from-five-continents\/\" rel=\"noopener\">international gathering<\/a> of Iranian expatriates just outside Paris. The plot specifically targeted the Iranian Resistance leader <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/biography\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryam Rajavi<\/a> the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/about-ncri\/alternative\/\" rel=\"noopener\">NCRI<\/a>). Had it not been thwarted by European authorities, it most likely would have caused hundreds of deaths, including those of Western political dignitaries who were attending the 2018 event in a show of support for the MEK\u2019s platform of regime change leading to democratic governance in Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The MEK\u2019s support among Western lawmakers has been growing for many years and has come to include members of every major political party in both the US and the European Union. Three accomplices, agents of the Iranian intelligence ministry were respectively sentenced to 18, 17, and 15 years in prison and were stripped of their Belgian citizenship. The judge stipulated that the bomb was manufactured in Iran and was carried to Europe in a diplomatic suitcase. They had been instructed to place the bomb as close as possible to Mrs. Maryam Rajavi. Assadi who was under police watch, delivered the bomb to one of the agents in Luxemburg and was arrested in Germany on his way back to Austria. He was then extradited to Belgium for trial. Simultaneous with the declaration of the court ruling, a virtual conference was held with participants joining in from more than 3,000 places across the world including MEK members in Ashraf, Albania. In her speech at the conference, Mrs. Rajavi said, \u201cToday\u2019s conviction of the Iranian regime\u2019s diplomat-terrorist confirms the Iranian regime\u2019s state terrorism by a European judicial authority. \u201c She made key policy recommendations to European leaders:\u201dRecall their ambassadors from Tehran and shut down the regime\u2019s embassies and centers in Europe which are used for terrorism. The Ministry of Intelligence and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards must be designated as terrorist entities. All their agents must be prosecuted and expelled from Europe. Tom Ridge former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security said: The planned bombing was a state sponsored operation by a terrorist state that continues to operate with arrogance with impunity, with disdain for human race and common decency, basic norms with civil society, \u2026 But rhetorical condemnation without further action, will be of little impact on this rogue regime, which heretofore has been totally unwilling to change its behavior. countries whose citizens were in harm&#039;s way, in the July event should consider downgrading, seriously, considering downgrading diplomatic relationships with Iran Patrick Kennedy: \u201cIt&#039;s time to call Iran for what it is: a terrorist state. It&#039;s time to expel their diplomats. It&#039;s time that we have a new Iran, that we support the NCRI, we support the 10-point plan of Madam Rajavi,\u201d A number of dignitaries from Albania also participated, including Mr. Pandeli Majko, state minister for Albanian diaspora. Giulio Terzi, the former foreign minister of Italy said: \u201cEurope\u2019s lack of proper action has emboldened Iran\u2019s regime in its terrorist activities, giving them the impression that they will not be held accountable.\u201d Former United States National Security Advisor James Jones underlined that \u201cwe should stand with the Iranian people and their desire for regime change by supporting the democratic alternative of the National Council of Resistance of Iran and its president-elect, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi.\u201d Stephen Harper, former Prime Minister of Canada said: \u201cThis is what the Islamic Republic in Tehran, the world&#039;s largest state sponsor of terrorism does.\u201d On the same day\u2019s evening, a virtual conference was also held in the United States by the Washington office of the NCRI. The panelists elaborated on the impact of the verdict by the Belgium court. The PMOI members in Ashraf3, Albania joyfully celebrated the Belgium court verdict. Read More: https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/IranNCR\/ https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy Subscribe to NCRI weekly newsletter t.ly\/MybJ\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:853px;margin:5px;\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Sani-Khani\u2019s letter describes only a rather narrow theater of that network\u2019s operation, focusing on Albania where the MEK erected a headquarters after thousands of its members were relocated from their embattled former home in Iraq. Nevertheless, the letter\u2019s contents represent a much larger phenomenon with implications for international security as well as the integrity of Western media. This fact was underscored by prior revelations during the Assadi trial, namely that the mastermind behind the 2018 terror plot had been running a network of operatives spanning at least 11 European countries, for many years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The exact function of that network remains to be determined, but it stands to reason that it was multi-faceted and that its purpose expanded over time as the operatives became more experienced and their operation became more sophisticated. What is known is that Assadi had personally provided cash payments to a number of his contacts in the months and years leading up to his arrest on July 1, 2018. Although it is possible that some of the assets were retained as sleeper cells for operations just like the Paris terror plot, these payments imply active and ongoing services, which would more likely involve intelligence-gathering and psychological operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In other words, Assadi\u2019s mission may have included running operations much like those described in Sani-Khani\u2019s letter. The letter begins by explaining that its author fled Iran in 2003 and joined the MEK in Iraq, then left the organization in 2016, shortly after relocation to Albania. Afterwards, he was promptly recruited by the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security, so that it could use his former membership in Iran\u2019s leading Resistance organization as a way to legitimize longstanding defamatory talking points.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Sani-Khani described being contacted by Ebrahim Khodabandeh, the head of an organization known as Nejat which was created by the MOIS for the express purpose of conveying propaganda in the guise of disclosures from persons who have \u201cescaped\u201d the Resistance movement. While much of this propaganda is disseminated directly by the MOIS via websites and social media accounts featuring individuals recruited by Nejat, some of its finds an even more insidious pathway into Western media outlets, facilitated by operatives who portray themselves to journalists as independent experts on Iranian affairs and counterterrorism.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Among these operatives are Ebrahim Khodabandeh\u2019s brother <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fas.org\/irp\/world\/iran\/mois-loc.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Massoud<\/a>, as well as Massoud\u2019s wife Anne Singleton. To this day, both occasionally receive bylines in legitimate Western outlets despite their demonstrable connections to Iranian intelligence. Sani-Khani\u2019s letter specifically names Khodabandeh and Singleton as having played the main role in connecting reporters to Iranian operatives in Albania who had been coached on what to say about the MEK\u2019s presence there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This operation eventually yielded stories in British and German media which were subjected to legal challenges in 2019 that resulted in the offending outlets being ordered to withdraw false claims and pay financial penalties. The MEK naturally expressed frustration with the fact that such challenges were still necessary so many years after the organization began raising alarms about the true origins of familiar talking points regarding its supposed \u201ccult-like\u201d status and lack of popular support inside Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The falsity of those talking points was exposed to an especially wide audience beginning in the final days of 2017 when Iran was quite suddenly rocked by a nationwide uprising that regime authorities begrudgingly attributed to the MEK. Signs of popular support for the MEK continued to accumulate after Maryam Rajavi issued a statement calling for activists to make 2018 a \u201cyear full of uprisings.\u201d The response to that appeal seemingly helped to fuel the regime\u2019s backlash, which culminated in the attempted bombing of the 2018 Free Iran rally, which had been organized by the MEK\u2019s parent coalition, the National Council of Resistance of Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The growth and function of Iranian terrorist and intelligence networks should alert the European and American policymakers to understand that they need to take much more assertive action to dismantle those networks and obstruct their operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The actions in question should include the closure of embassies like the one out of which Assadi was working, or they should emphasize explosion of anyone caught collaborating with Iranian Intelligence. But regardless of the specifics, the result must include creation of media standards that are much less credulous regarding disparaging claims about the Iranian Resistance.
