The arrests were allegedly part of a broader effort to compel Belgian authorities to vacate the charges against <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/guilty-verdict-for-iran-regimes-terrorist-isnt-enough-to-eliminate-threats-to-europe\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Assadollah Assadi<\/a>, the former third counsellor at the Iranian embassy in Vienna who was identified in 2018 as the mastermind of a plot to bomb the annual gathering of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/about-ncri\/alternative\/\" rel=\"noopener\">NCRI<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi was arrested in Germany on July 1, 2018, a day after two co-conspirators were stopped on the way from Belgium to France, where they planned to infiltrate the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/paris-free-iran-with-hundreds-of-top-personalities-lawmakers-and-elected-representatives-from-five-continents\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Free Iran rally<\/a> while carrying 500 grams of the high-explosive TATP. It was later revealed that Assadi himself had smuggled the explosives into Europe on a commercial flight, while traveling on a diplomatic passport. He had then handed it off to the would-be bombers, instructing them to place it as close as possible to the keynote speaker and Iranian Resistance leader <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/biography\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryam Rajavi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Had the plot not been foiled, it would have mostly likely resulted in several hundred deaths, including those of political dignitaries who had traveled to the host venue just outside of Paris. Three accomplices, agents of the Iranian intelligence ministry were respectively sentenced to 18, 17, and 15 years in prison and were stripped of their Belgian citizenship. The judge stipulated that the bomb was manufactured in Iran and was carried to Europe in a diplomatic suitcase. They had been instructed to place the bomb as close as possible to Mrs. Maryam Rajavi. Assadi who was under police watch, delivered the bomb to one of the agents in Luxemburg and was arrested in Germany on his way back to Austria. He was then extradited to Belgium for trial. Simultaneous with the declaration of the court ruling, a virtual conference was held with participants joining in from more than 3,000 places across the world including MEK members in Ashraf, Albania. In her speech at the conference, Mrs. Rajavi said, \u201cToday\u2019s conviction of the Iranian regime\u2019s diplomat-terrorist confirms the Iranian regime\u2019s state terrorism by a European judicial authority. \u201c She made key policy recommendations to European leaders:\u201dRecall their ambassadors from Tehran and shut down the regime\u2019s embassies and centers in Europe which are used for terrorism. The Ministry of Intelligence and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards must be designated as terrorist entities. All their agents must be prosecuted and expelled from Europe. Tom Ridge former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security said: The planned bombing was a state sponsored operation by a terrorist state that continues to operate with arrogance with impunity, with disdain for human race and common decency, basic norms with civil society, \u2026 But rhetorical condemnation without further action, will be of little impact on this rogue regime, which heretofore has been totally unwilling to change its behavior. countries whose citizens were in harm&#039;s way, in the July event should consider downgrading, seriously, considering downgrading diplomatic relationships with Iran Patrick Kennedy: \u201cIt&#039;s time to call Iran for what it is: a terrorist state. It&#039;s time to expel their diplomats. It&#039;s time that we have a new Iran, that we support the NCRI, we support the 10-point plan of Madam Rajavi,\u201d A number of dignitaries from Albania also participated, including Mr. Pandeli Majko, state minister for Albanian diaspora. Giulio Terzi, the former foreign minister of Italy said: \u201cEurope\u2019s lack of proper action has emboldened Iran\u2019s regime in its terrorist activities, giving them the impression that they will not be held accountable.\u201d Former United States National Security Advisor James Jones underlined that \u201cwe should stand with the Iranian people and their desire for regime change by supporting the democratic alternative of the National Council of Resistance of Iran and its president-elect, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi.\u201d Stephen Harper, former Prime Minister of Canada said: \u201cThis is what the Islamic Republic in Tehran, the world&#039;s largest state sponsor of terrorism does.\u201d On the same day\u2019s evening, a virtual conference was also held in the United States by the Washington office of the NCRI. Some of them conveyed that view by signing their names to statements commenting upon the trial both before and after Assadi\u2019s conviction. Two such <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/isjcommittee.com\/2021\/02\/press-release-eu-silence-on-iranian-bomb-plot-slammed\/\" rel=\"noopener\">statements<\/a> were prepared by a Brussels-based NGO called the International Committee in Search of Justice (ISJ), which is chaired by the former vice president of the European Parliament, Alejo Vidal-Quadras.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The more recent of these was primarily addressed to European Council President Charles Michel and it accused the European External Action Service and the EU\u2019s head of foreign policy Josep Borrell of maintaining policies that amount to \u201ccatastrophic capitulation\u201d even in the wake of \u201cthe Iranian regime\u2019s attempt to bomb and kill people on European soil.\u201d The statement urged more assertive Western policies, including downgrades in diplomatic relations, as a means of countering the threat of further attacks on Western territory and personnel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ironically, Borrell announced that he would deliver a keynote address at the Europe-Iran Business Forum, alongside Iranian Foreign Minister <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-world\/26715-a-look-at-the-record-of-iran-regime-foreign-minister-javad-zarif\" rel=\"noopener\">Mohammad Javad Zarif<\/a>. The ISJ statement directly identified Zarif as one of the leading Iranian officials involved in the 2018 terror plot, and so it also called for Western powers to take action against him and to consider closing the embassies from which terrorist entities like Assadi manage their networks.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1)<br \/>After <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AssadollahAssadi?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AssadollahAssadi<\/a>\u2019s conviction, and while <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UN?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UN<\/a> condemned Iran regime for the 67th time for human rights abuses, what message will <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JosepBorrellF?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JosepBorrellF<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eu_eeas?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@eu_eeas<\/a>&#39;s \u201cmaximum diplomacy\u201d strategy send to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Find out more here:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LuMsx5qCG8\">https:\/\/t.co\/LuMsx5qCG8<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vj9XizA3Ij\">pic.twitter.com\/vj9XizA3Ij<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; International Committee in Search of Justice (ISJ) (@isjcommittee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/isjcommittee\/status\/1362042588753055748?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Assadi\u2019s trial revealed not only the details of his role in the plot to bomb the Free Iran rally but also the fact that he had recently been in direct contact with assets spanning at least 11 European countries, many of whom received cash payments from him for unknown services. This is a sure sign of a persistent threat that is being largely ignored in the wake of the February 4 conviction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Now, with the revelation of Iran having arrested two more Western nationals prior to that date, it is clear that the Assadi case reflects additional threats beyond the threat of large-scale terrorist attacks. The recent ISJ statement emphasizes the idea that the EU will be giving high-ranking officials a free pass for their unsuccessful plot if European policymakers decline to pursue broader accountability. Future statements are sure to add that the EU also risks giving Iran a free pass for some of its latest instances of hostage-taking \u2013 a practice that dates back to the immediate aftermath of the 1979 revolution.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The EU certainly should have been spurred to more assertive action immediately after details were released about the regime\u2019s efforts to attack the Iranian Resistance on European soil. Statements from the likes of ISJ should have reinforced that impulse while also providing European leadership with concrete examples of the sorts of policies they could implement to prevent such things from happening again. But having previously failed to heed those recommendations, the EU still has an opportunity to recognize news of the recent arrests as another opportunity to make an assertive shift in its Iran policy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The NCRI has long insisted that the only language Tehran is likely to respond to is the language of strength. That conclusion has been steadily reinforced in recent months and years, as the EU has insisted upon a strategy of \u201cmaximum diplomacy,\u201d only to meet with one example after another of Iran exploiting that goodwill to assert its own impunity in matters related to terrorism, hostage-taking, human rights violations, and so on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The 2018 terror plot is perhaps the worst recent example of this phenomenon, while the newly-reported arrests are only the latest.
