The proceedings raised significant questions about whether, and how, Brussels intends to pursue accountability from higher up in the Iranian regime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On February 4, a criminal court in Antwerp issued a 20-year sentence for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/iranian-diplomat-and-three-accomplices-on-trial-for-planned-bombing-of-a-massive-rally-in-paris\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Assadollah<\/a> Assadi, and sentences of 15, 17, and 18 years for three co-conspirators in a 2018 plot to set off explosives at a gathering of Iranian expatriates in France. An Iranian-Belgian couple was found in possession of the bomb that was to be used in the attack before they were able to cross the border. Another accomplice was arrested after having separately infiltrated the target venue, and Assadi himself was arrested a day later in Germany, before being extradited to Belgium.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The trial, which began last November after a more than two-year investigation, established that Assadi had personally smuggled the explosives from Iran to Europe, using a diplomatic pouch onboard a commercial flight. The information suggests the mullahs\u2019 network of espionage and terrorism is much wider in Europe than it appears. Assadi was arrested in July 2018 after delivering a bomb to a terrorist couple, Nasimeh Na\u2019ami and Amir Saadouni, in Luxembourg and tasking them to plant the bomb in the \u201cFree Iran\u201d gathering of the Iranian opposition in Villepinte, north of Paris, France. Germany\u2019s police arrested Assadi on July 1 before he could enter Austria, where he served as the third secretary of Iran\u2019s embassy. The German authorities found a green notebook in Assadi\u2019s car with important information about the 2018 bombing plot, Assadi\u2019s acts and travels, and the amounts of money he had given to different Iranians. According to the Deutsche Welle Farsi, the German Federal Criminal Court (BKA) is investigating Assadi\u2019s activities on a mission from the German Attorney General. The question is: Has Assadi commanded a large network of people tasked with different missions? The information in his notebook suggests Assadi had 144 visits to Germany. One of Assadi\u2019s notes refers to the Islamic Center of Hamburg. The BKA recognizes this center as one of the regime\u2019s espionage and export of fundamentalism centers. Another issue that caught the attention of the police is that Assadi had several receipts with him, indicating cash payments he made to some people. Recipients\u2019 identities have not yet been determined, since they have used common Iranian names. One of these individuals received 2500 Euros, another 5000 Euros, and another person confirmed the receipt of a laptop. According to Deutsche Welle, the BKA authorities deduce that these payments could be the salaries of the regime\u2019s agents. According to the Belgian prosecutors\u2019 indictment, during the last meeting between Assadi and the couple on June 28, 2018, in Luxembourg, Na\u2019ami received the bomb, a new SIM card, and 180,000 euros. On June 26, 19,000 euros was wired to the couple\u2019s account. Another Assadi\u2019s agent Mehrdad Arefani who was arrested during the bomb plot made 62 cash deposits in 2017 and 2018, with a total of 28,409Euros, into his accounts. In fact, the regime used the European Union\u2019s inaction to create and lead a large network of spies and terrorists across Europe. The 2018 foiled bomb plot is only the tip of the iceberg of the Iranian regime\u2019s network in Europe. Now the key questions are: Who are those agents mentioned in Assadi\u2019s notebook? Which diplomat has Mohammad Javad Zarif appointed to run the network instead of Asadi? As long as the regime has its embassies and so-called cultural centers remain open, and its officials can travel to Europe, the regime will maintain its network of terrorism and espionage in Europe. EU leaders should expel the regime\u2019s agents, close its embassies and the so-called cultural centers, and ban the entry of all Iranian officials to Europe for their role in terrorism. Read More: https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/IranNCR\/ https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy Subscribe to NCRI weekly newsletter t.ly\/MybJ #Iran #terrorism #AssadollahAssadi #EU\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:853px;margin:5px;\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Documents recovered from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/guilty-verdict-for-iran-regimes-terrorist-isnt-enough-to-eliminate-threats-to-europe\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Assadi\u2019s<\/a> vehicle at the time of his arrest indicated that he had visited and provided cash payments to assets spanning at least 11 European countries. The investigation also established that this network was not a freestanding entity established on Assadi\u2019s own initiative but maintained close connections to the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security, and by extension to the regime\u2019s leadership. Prosecutors in Assadi\u2019s case made it clear that the French terror plot was expressly ordered by high-ranking authorities and undertaken in the name of the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These facts were reaffirmed in Tuesday\u2019s parliamentary committee hearing, with participants seemingly citing them as support for policies that maintain pressure on the Iranian regime in the wake of Assadi\u2019s conviction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/iran-regime-diplomacy-of-terror\/\" rel=\"noopener\">court<\/a> considers the suspects to be a terrorist group within the MOIS,\u201d said committee chairman Els Van Hoof. \u201cThey had been summoned several times to travel to Tehran and were engaged in gathering information, finding targets, and organizing effective attacks on events. In addition, according to the ruling, the Iranian regime has never distanced itself from the attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Insofar as the four persons who were convicted in February were only part of a much larger network, it stands to reason that the specified activities are still ongoing in some fashion, or are at least due to resume in the near future. This conclusion has been expressed by numerous European lawmakers in the month between the Antwerp court\u2019s verdict and the parliament\u2019s hearing on the impact of that case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In an online conference held in the immediate aftermath of Assadi\u2019s conviction, Mich\u00e8le de Vaucouleurs, a member of the French National Assembly, declared that in order to prevent repetition of the sorts of threats that were exposed at the time of the 2018 Free Iran rally, \u201cdiplomatic relations with the Iranian regime should be suspended and only restored after a democratic transition takes place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the same conference, former Norwegian Member of Parliament Lars Rise went even further by declaring, \u201cAfter receiving today\u2019s verdict, all European leaders have to add an arrest warrant for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/irans-chief-apologist-zarif-confirms-his-ties-with-qassem-soleimani-and-his-role-in-terrorism\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Zarif<\/a> to their to-do list.\u201d He was referring to the widely-held belief that the involvement of a high-ranking Iranian diplomat in the 2018 plot is proof that the Foreign Minister and other top officials were directly involved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even before Assadi\u2019s conviction, the call for retaliation against such officials had been expressed in multiple statements bearing the signatures of dozens of European lawmakers. \u201cIranian <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-world\/26715-a-look-at-the-record-of-iran-regime-foreign-minister-javad-zarif\" rel=\"noopener\">Foreign Minister Javad Zarif<\/a> must be held accountable\u2026 the activities of Iran\u2019s embassies, religious and cultural centers need to be scrutinized and the diplomatic relations with Iran need to be downgraded,\u201d said one such statement from the Brussels-based NGO the International Committee in Search of Justice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Belgian government has still taken no official position on these sorts of recommendations in the wake of Tuesday\u2019s hearing. But Foreign Affairs Minister Sophie Wilm\u00e8s did make it clear that Brussels will not be deterred by threats from the Iranian regime. The hearing addressed past and ongoing Iranian efforts to link the Assadi case to cases involving Western nationals who have been imprisoned in Iran and are widely believed to be hostages and prospective bargaining chips in the regime\u2019s negotiations with Western powers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Wilm\u00e8s specifically highlighted the case of Ahmadreza Djalali, an Iranian-born medical researcher who holds Swedish citizenship but was previously employed in Belgium as well. Last November, right around the time that Assadollah Assadi first went on trial, Djalali was moved into solitary confinement, ostensibly as a precursor to his execution. The threat to his life was believed to be part of an effort to pressure Belgian authorities into releasing Assadi or downgrading his charges, but Brussels quickly countered by warning of the possible severance of diplomatic and trade ties if the execution went forward.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tuesday\u2019s hearing seemed to provide for the reiteration of that position, with Wilm\u00e8s saying of Assadi and Djalali, \u201cFor Belgium, these are two completely separate cases.\u201d She went on to say that \u201cthat, of course, does not diminish our concern for Mr. Djalali&#8217;s fate.\u201d But by keeping the two issues separate, Brussels appears to be signaling its intention to use other methods apart from prisoner swaps or related concessions as part of an effort to safeguard Djalali and others like him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It remains to be seen, however, exactly what those other methods are and whether they include the sorts of sanctions and other high-pressure tactics that the International Committee in Search of Justice and other serious critics of the Iranian regime have advocated both before and after Assadi\u2019s terrorism conviction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past Tuesday, the Belgian parliament held a committee hearing on Foreign Affairs, very nearly one month after the conclusion of a terrorism trial involving a high-ranking Iranian diplomat Assadollah [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":235957,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[19],"tags":[129,195,198,273],"class_list":{"0":"post-235955","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-terrorism-a-fundamentalism","8":"tag-iran","9":"tag-free-iran","10":"tag-ncri","11":"tag-assadollah-assadi"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
