{"id":23611,"date":"2017-09-29T01:11:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-29T00:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/statements\/nuclear\/23611-defence-expert-trump-should-decertify-iran-regime-s-nuclear-deal-compliance"},"modified":"2023-01-17T21:55:26","modified_gmt":"2023-01-17T20:55:26","slug":"defence-expert-trump-should-decertify-iran-regime-s-nuclear-deal-compliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/nuclear\/defence-expert-trump-should-decertify-iran-regime-s-nuclear-deal-compliance\/","title":{"rendered":"Defence Expert: Trump Should Decertify Iran Regime&#8217;s Nuclear Deal Compliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"1000x563_389566\" class=\" size-full wp-image-49876\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/09\/1000x563_389566.jpg\" alt=\"1000x563_389566\" width=\"480\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/1000x563_389566.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/1000x563_389566-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>NCRI Staff<\/p>\n<p>NCRI &#8211;\u00a0Donald Trump is reportedly gathering any reason he can to decertify Iran\u2019s compliance with the nuclear deal come October and one defence expert has voiced his support for Trump\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Brookes, a Heritage Foundation senior fellow and a former deputy assistant secretary of defense, wrote an op-ed for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/opinion\/op_ed\/2017\/09\/brookes_trump_stockpiles_reasons_to_blow_up_iran_nuke_pact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Herald<\/a> in which he assessed that the 2015 nuclear deal (formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) was a \u201cticking time bomb\u201d that \u201ccould explode [at] any time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On October 15, the White House will have to verify to Congress that the Iranian Regime is in compliance with the nuclear deal.<\/p>\n<p>This will be hard to do given the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetower.org\/5481-iaea-chief-we-are-now-unable-to-verify-iran-is-implementing-nuclear-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">admission<\/a> from the International Atomic Energy Agency that they can\u2019t verify Iran\u2019s full compliance and Trump\u2019s extremely vocal opposition to the deal, having called it an \u201cembarrassment\u201d and the \u201cworst deal ever\u201d at the United Nations General Assembly last week.<\/p>\n<p>Brookes wrote: \u201cTrump also said he\u2019d made up his mind about what to do about it \u2014 though he didn\u2019t tip his hand as to what exactly that was. If I had to bet, it isn\u2019t a continuation of the status quo. Considering the deal\u2019s shortcomings, that\u2019s understandable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some defenders of the deal have argued that the deal should be kept in place because it slows down Iran\u2019s development of nuclear weapons for another decade, but Brooke argues that its end date is one of the key problems with the pact.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote: \u201cThe deal has a \u201csunset provision,\u201d which is when key restrictions on Iran\u2019s uranium enrichment program are phased out, leaving Tehran footloose and fissile free to build a bomb. Indeed, President Obama acknowledged in a 2015 NPR interview that after vital restrictions in the deal expire at the 15-year mark, Tehran could produce enough fissile material for a bomb in no time. Isn\u2019t that comforting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian Regime has previously claimed that the nuclear programme is peaceful, which begs the question, \u201chow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also for a peaceful programme, the mullahs certainly went through an awful lot of trouble to keep it a secret by keeping factories underground and in other countries. Even after discovery and the agreement to stop, the Regime has prevented the IAEA from accessing certain sites that are believed to have been used for nuclear purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Brookes wrote: \u201cTell me: How can you feel confident in verifying compliance with the agreement based on limited inspection rights \u2014 on top of two decades of Iranian denials and deception on its atomic activities? Uh, you can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, Iran is still allowed to conduct centrifuge research, support terrorists, destabilise the Middle East, continue its ballistic missile programme, and work with North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Brookes wrote: \u201cEven if Tehran is currently in technical compliance, the pact leaves Iran as a \u201cthreshold\u201d nuclear state and won\u2019t stop it from becoming a de facto nuclear power in the not-too-distant future.
