Following the recent meeting in Vienna of participants in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal,\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>here has been a notable increase in optimism about the prospects for restoring mutual compliance with the agreement. The European participants<\/a> \u2013 Britain, France, Germany, and the EU \u2013 are apparently hoping to convince\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Iran<\/span>ian regime<\/span>\u00a0and the US to restore the status quo all at once. Too little attention has been given to whether that is a desirable goal, especially now that circumstances have changed in the wake of Iranian provocations<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In her confirmation hearing, the nominee for\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman, said of Iran policy<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe facts on the ground have changed, the geopolitics of the region have changed, and the way forward must similarly change.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Unfortunately, though, there\u2019s little sign of the European<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0adopting a similar perspective. Meanwhile, there is plenty of evidence that Tehran is trying to exploit the EU\u2019s commitment to moving backward.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Iran proposes logical path to full JCPOA<\/a> compliance<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Iranian regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Foreign Minister\u00a0<\/span>Javad<\/span>\u00a0Zarif recently said via Twitter, referring to the nuclear deal\u2019s formal name, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. \u201c<\/span>US\u2014which caused this crisis\u2014should return to fu<\/span>ll compliance first; I<\/span>ran will reciproca<\/span>te following rapid verification,\u201d he proposed, then added:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>All Trump sanctions were\u00a0<\/span>anti-JCPOA & must be removed [without]<\/span>\u00a0distinction between arbitrary designations.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Having been posted after the Vienna meeting,<\/a> Zarif\u2019s message underscores the fact that Tehran\u00a0<\/span>is continuing its blackmail policy<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>What Zarif<\/a> is proposing is not just a situation in which Iran reclaims the financial benefits it feels it was promised during JCPOA negotiations; it is a situation in which Western powers capitulate to an Iranian ultimatum and guarantee that the country\u2019s leaders will face no consequences for their violations of the agreement, either before or after the US withdrawal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the two years that Iran has been formally out of compliance with the JCPOA\u2019s terms,\u00a0<\/span>some of the<\/span>\u00a0weaknesses and deficiencies\u00a0<\/span>of JCPOA\u00a0<\/span>have become more apparent, often through direct acknowledgment of wrongdoing by the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian regime<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
