NCRI –\u00a0Almost a week ago, an earthquake measuring 7.3 struck the mountainous area in the Iran-Iraq border region. It was felt from as far away as Turkey and there are reports that the death toll is 530.<\/p>\n
It was a highly destructive earthquake and tens of thousands of people have been left homeless and left to brave the cold weather conditions.<\/p>\n
It was more powerful that the devastating earthquake that hit Mexico a few months ago.<\/p>\n
As happens after almost all natural disasters across the world, numerous appeals are made to the international community for help. However, this has not happened in Iran. The Iranian government is giving the impression that it has everything under control and several officials have declared publicly, via Twitter and the likes, that everything is \u201cback to normal\u201d in the country. But this is not true.<\/p>\n
The Iranian regime is putting its own people last. Again.<\/p>\n
The country has been subject to numerous huge earthquakes in the past. Over 26,000 people were killed in an earthquake in 2003 in Bam in the south-east of the country. In 1990, more than 50,000 people died in Rudbar when a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the north-western part of the country.<\/p>\n
These are just two examples of many devastating earthquakes that have hit the country. So, it begs the question \u2013 why is the Iranian government so incompetent when it comes to protecting its people against such disasters?<\/p>\n
In Japan, another country prone to powerful earthquakes, policies have been put into place to protect its citizens. The people of Iran do not benefit from such protection.
The Iranian regime puts itself first, and the people of Iran are seen as a disruption. Authorities spend much of their time intimidating the people and the leadership of the country is rife with corruption.<\/p>\n
The country\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) controls most of the country\u2019s economy and a huge portion of the country\u2019s budget is spent on its military and terrorist groups abroad. This leaves the people of the country destitute. The Iranian regime plunders the nation\u2019s wealth to line its own pockets.
The careless construction across the country is not only a liability when it comes to earthquakes. There was a fire recently that caused a building to collapse, killing many firefighters who went inside to rescue occupants. Many buildings in the country are known to not meet safety regulations, but nothing is done about it.<\/p>\n
After the recent earthquake, many people have been left homeless. The country\u2019s Red Crescent was sent to provide relief. It handed out tents to some of those affected, but there are still countless people that have to brave the elements with nothing. They no longer have any belongings and have no food or shelter. The people are scared and they have no one to help them but the other helpless citizens that surround them.<\/p>\n
It is time that the Iranian regime took accountability for its actions, or lack of them, and it must start putting the people first.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
