The main target of that edict and the resulting systematic executions was the People\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mojahedin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Organization of Iran<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(PMOI\/MEK)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which was and remains the leading voice for a democratic alternative to the country\u2019s theocratic dictatorship.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recently,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a number of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0current\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MEK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> members and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20932-the-1988-massacre-in-iran\" rel=\"noopener\">relatives of the 1988<\/a> massacre\u2019s victims joined in<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/iran-1112-families-of-mek-martyrs-urge-the-un-to-prevent-the-destruction-of-their-loved-ones-graves\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> signing a letter<\/a> to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, which calls renewed attention to alleged crime against humanity. Previously, on August 5, Mostafa Salehy, who was detained in the 2018 major Iran protests was executed. The mullahs\u2019 incessant executions and human rights violations will continue as long as they enjoy impunity over 1988 massacre of political prisoners. Executions in Iran are a political tool for the mullahs to maintain their grasp on power. The regime\u2019s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini, ordered the massacre of all political prisoners, mostly members and supporters of PMOI\/ MEK, who refused to succumb to the regime\u2019s demands. 30,000 innocent prisoners were executed only for preserving their ideas. Since the 1988 massacre, the regime has never stopped its human rights violations. killing over 1500 protesters during the major Iran protests in November 2019, indicate how the mullahs use execution and repression to prolong their rule. These events also confirm how the mullahs enjoy and use their impunity over the 1988 massacre as a license to kill and further brutalize the Iranian society. many of the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre \u2013 such as Ebrahim Raisi, current head of the regime\u2019s Judiciary \u2013 hold top positions in the regime. Now, to end the regime\u2019s ongoing human rights violations, the world community should hold the mullahs to account for the 1988 massacre and end their impunity. This will also help the Iranian people in their quest for freedom and democracy. The world community has an opportunity to stand with the people of Iran. The United Nations and its members should take action regarding the 1988 massacre during the upcoming UN General Assembly in September. In fact, the letter itself used these terms to describe regime behaviors that had been enabled by the UN\u2019s initial failure to follow up on reports of an accelerating pace of executions in 1988. More than 30,000 political prisoners were massacred. The vast majority of the victims were activists of the opposition People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI-MEK). The letter by the Special Rapporteurs, dated September 3, 2020, has only just been made public by the UN. It calls on the Iranian regime to prosecute the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre. It adds that if Tehran continues to refuse to uphold its obligations under international human rights law, the UN experts call on the international community to launch its own investigation into the massacre \u201cincluding through the establishment of an international investigation.\u201d The UN experts wrote: \u201cIn 1988, the Iranian authorities forcibly disappeared and extrajudicially executed thousands of imprisoned political dissidents affiliated with political opposition groups\u201d President-elect of the NCRI called the report \u201ca major and qualitative step in the advancement of the movement for justice for the victims of that massacre.\u201c Mrs. Rajavi noted that the report, which emphasizes the regime\u2019s non-compliance with its \u201cobligations under international human rights law,\u201d including the non-disclosure of the fate and burial place of those executed, heightens the need to refer this dossier on the ongoing crime against humanity to the UN Security Council, and to bring to account the officials and perpetrators of this great crime of the century. Presently, both the head of the judiciary and Iran\u2019s Minister of Justice are individuals who previously served on the \u201cdeath commissions\u201d that determined which dissidents would be hanged on the charge of \u201cenmity against God.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Perhaps in recognition of this situation, the UN human rights experts clarified to Iranian authorities that if they did not take action on their own, the responsibility would fall to the international community. When their letter was published in December, it confirmed that no response had been received from Tehran and that a response would now be expected from the UN and its leading member states.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amnesty International responded to that statement by calling it a \u201cmomentous breakthrough\u201d and a prospective \u201cturning point\u201d in the campaign for accountability from the perpetrators of the massacre. That language was later cited in a resolution introduced to the US House of Resolution\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which expresses support for the democratic Resistance against the Iranian government, in the face of ongoing human rights violations and acts of terrorism.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Res. 118 also highlighted statements from Amnesty and the UN human rights experts which recognized that victims of the 1988 massacre were buried in mass graves in at least 32 Iranian cities. However, the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MEK <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">places that number at 36, including cities in which mass graves have already been concealed through a process of systematic destruction by regime authorities. Now, the letter from victims\u2019 families calls renewed attention to that ongoing cover-up and urges the international community to take action to stop a development project targeting the mass grave at Iran\u2019s Khavaran Cemetery.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Previously,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[the regime]<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0destroyed or damaged the mass graves of the 1988 victims in Ahvaz,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Tabriz, Mashhad, and elsewhere,\u201d that letter says, underscoring the threat that such actions pose to the accuracy and completeness of any future investigation into the details of the massacre.<\/span><span the letter also seeks to convey to Secretary General Guterres a sense of urgency regarding the need for such an investigation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After briefly recapping the circumstances of the 1988 massacre and the regime\u2019s more than three-decade cover-up, the letter declared that \u201cthe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Iranian public and all human rights defenders expect the United Nations, particularly the UN Security Council, to launch an investigation into the massacre of political prisoners and summon the perpetrators of this heinous crime before the International Court of Justice.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span urging Guterres himself, along with \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the relevant bodies at the United Nations and international human rights organizations\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prevent the regime from destroying the mass graves, eliminatin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">g the evidence of their crime,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and inflicting psychological torture upon thousands of families of the victims throughout Iran.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span
