The regime\u2019s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-ebrahim-raisi-a-mass-murderer-for-president\/\" rel=\"noopener\">pulled Ebrahim<\/a> Raisi out of the ballot box. Many human rights organizations and defenders soon condemned Rais\u2019s selection and called for his prosecution.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Amnesty International June 19 published a press release about Raisi\u2019s presidency. Agnes\u00a0Callamard, Amnesty International\u2019s Secretary-General, called Raisi\u2019s presidency part of a\u00a0\u201csystematic impunity in Iran\u201d under the mullahs\u2019 regime, and said:\u00a0\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThat Ebrahim Raisi has risen to the presidency instead of being investigated for the crimes against humanity of murder, enforced disappearance, and torture, is a grim reminder that impunity reigns supreme in Iran. In 2018, our organization documented how Ebrahim Raisi had been a member of the \u2018death commission,\u2019 which forcibly disappeared and extrajudicially executed in secret thousands of political dissidents in Evin and\u00a0Gohardasht\u00a0prisons near Tehran in 1988. The circumstances surrounding the fate of the victims and the whereabouts of their bodies are, to this day, systematically concealed by the Iranian authorities,\u202f<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde13\/9421\/2018\/en\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">amounting to ongoing crimes against humanity<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Raisi is the notorious henchman of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" rel=\"noopener\">1988 massacre<\/a> of over 30,000 political prisoners. He was also the regime\u2019s Judiciary Chief from 2019 until 2021. During Raisi\u2019s time as Iran\u2019s Judiciary Chief, nearly 700 people were executed, including 22 political prisoners. The detained protesters of two nationwide uprisings in 2018 and 2019 in Iran were brutally tortured and received lengthy prison sentences.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cAs Head of the Iranian Judiciary, Ebrahim Raisi has presided over a\u00a0spiralling\u00a0crackdown on human rights which has seen hundreds of peaceful dissidents, human rights defenders, and members of persecuted minority groups arbitrarily detained. Under his watch, the judiciary has also granted blanket impunity to government officials and security forces responsible for\u202f<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iran-shutdown.amnesty.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">unlawfully killing hundreds of men, women, and children<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fand subjecting thousands of protesters to\u202f<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde13\/2891\/2020\/en\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">mass arrests and at least hundreds to enforced disappearance, and torture, and other ill-treatment<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fduring and in the aftermath of the nationwide protests of November 2019,\u201d Ms.\u00a0Callamard\u2019s\u00a0statement read in part.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">In September 2020, seven United Nations Experts, published a letter they had submitted to Tehran earlier that year, calling for investigations into the 1988 massacre. Organizations like Amnesty International called for holding Raisi accountable.
