That summer, panels of judiciary and intelligence officials, known as &#8220;death commissions&#8221; interrogated political prisoners throughout Iran and ordered the summary execution of all those who failed to demonstrate fealty to the theocratic system. Many were sent to the gallows after &#8220;trials&#8221; lasting just a few minutes, during which they refused to disavow their support to the leading pro-democracy opposition group, the People&#8217;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran\u00a0\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/about-iranian-opposition-pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener\">(PMOI\/MEK).<\/a><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reuters\u00a0report states that\u00a0in a statement, the Justice for Victims of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" rel=\"noopener\">1988 Massacre<\/a> in Iran welcomed Rehman&#8217;s call, saying that a U.N. investigation into the extrajudicial executions was &#8220;long overdue. &#8220;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is highly significant that the\u00a0MEK\u00a0was the prime target of the 1988 massacre, especially given that the architects of that massacre definitively failed in their goal of stamping out organized opposition against the clerical regime. While it was ongoing, the massacre was a clear sign of the extent to which Iranian authorities felt threatened by that opposition. Since then, it has served as a perennial reminder of the depths those authorities are willing to sink to when trying to suppress dissent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The massacre was prompted by a fatwa from the regime&#8217;s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini, which declared that the\u00a0MEK\u00a0and affiliated groups were guilty of\u00a0&#8220;enmity against God&#8221;\u00a0and should consequently be\u00a0killed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The threat of similar reprisals has only intensified in recent years, as Tehran has struggled to restore order in the wake of multiple,\u00a0widespread uprisings that demonstrated the\u00a0MEK&#8217;s breadth of social influence.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In his interview on Monday, Javaid Rehman highlighted the role that Ebrahim Raisi is believed to have played in the 1988 massacre and also in the 2019 crackdown, which took place after he had been appointed as head of the judiciary by the regime&#8217;s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. That appointment seemed to clear the way for Raisi to run effectively unopposed in Iran&#8217;s June presidential campaign. His victory was confirmed on June 18, and critics promptly began warning of the potential for Iran&#8217;s human rights record to grow even worse in the Raisi era.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rehman correctly indicated that\u00a0Raisi&#8217;s\u00a0status as president-elect greatly increases the urgency of an international investigation into his role in crimes against humanity, both historical and recent. The NCRI went further by emphasizing the need for multilateral sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and other assertive measures as a means of deterring Iranian authorities from stepping up its crackdowns on dissent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That message will no doubt be reiterated before an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/free-iran-world-summit\/\" rel=\"noopener\">international audience<\/a> between July 10 and 12, when the annual\u00a0live-streamed gathering of Iranian expatriates, the\u00a0&#8220;Free Iran World Summit.&#8221;\u00a0takes place.\u00a0The event is expected to connect tens of thousands of expatriate activists through\u00a0a number of\u00a0simultaneous gatherings and will also feature speeches from\u00a0hundreds\u00a0of\u00a0European and American\u00a0dignitaries and lawmakers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.sender.net\/forms\/dGYVLa\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The event will certainly feature testimony from survivors of the 1988 massacre and from the families of its victims, as well as presenting clear evidence of\u00a0Raisi&#8217;s\u00a0high-level involvement\u00a0in\u00a0the farcical trials and resulting death sentences in the nation&#8217;s capital.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Proper investigations will certainly help to confront the Iranian regime&#8217;s culture of impunity regarding this and other crimes against humanity.
