It has been\u00a0almost a month\u00a0since Ebrahim<\/a> Raisi was appointed<\/a> as the next president of the\u00a0Iranian regime. The word \u201cappointed\u201d is a much more appropriate descriptor than \u201celected\u201d\u00a0in light of the fact that\u00a0the overwhelming majority of\u00a0the Iranian people sat out the June 18\u00a0sham\u00a0election in order to\u00a0show their desire for regime change and underline the regime\u2019s illegitimacy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the entire selection process in Iran under the mullahs\u2019 regime is undemocratic,\u00a0Raisi ran a campaign that was effectively uncontested on account of his having the enthusiastic personal support of\u00a0the regime\u2019s\u00a0Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Guardian Council, a 12-member body appointed directly and indirectly by the supreme leader, rewarded that support by excluding all other candidates from the ballot, leaving one official from the outgoing administration to act as a scapegoat in debates with Raisi and four other\u00a0so-called\u00a0\u201chardliners,\u201d half of whom dropped out of the race at the last minute to throw their weight behind him as well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That support was countered by public protests\u00a0from the Iranian opposition,\u00a0the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran\u00a0(PMOI\/MEK)<\/a>, which has long described\u00a0Raisi as the \u201chenchman of 1988\u201d on account of his leading role in that year\u2019s massacre of political prisoners, which primarily targeted the\u00a0MEK\u00a0on the basis of\u00a0a fatwa from\u00a0Ruhollah\u00a0Khomeini which declared them enemies of God. The massacre claimed\u00a0over\u00a030,000<\/a> lives nationwide, and as one of the members of the Tehran \u201cdeath commission\u201d at the time, Raisi arguably bears responsibility for\u00a0a majority of\u00a0them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the lead-up to Raisi\u2019s latest appointment, he was also targeted by protests from those Iranian citizens who lost family members in a much more recent massacre. In November 2019,\u00a0Iran\u00a0was rocked by a nationwide uprising that encompassed nearly 200 cities and towns and featured anti-regime\u00a0slogans like \u201cdeath to the dictator.\u201d Having already faced down those slogans on a similarly large less than two years earlier, the regime was anxious to stamp out the dissident activity much more definitively. Khamenei ordered immediate reprisals and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps soon responded by opening fire on crowds of protesters, killing 1,500 in a matter of days.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The aftermath of those shootings was just as grim, and although it has never been made clear just how much the death toll rose in the ensuing months, there is no doubt that the regime\u2019s judiciary tortured hundreds if not thousands of arrestees during that period. This was confirmed in a detailed report by Amnesty International, and intelligence networks affiliated with the MEK established that upwards of 12,000 people have been directly impacted by the domestic terror campaign after being arrested in connection with the uprising.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All of this reflects upon Raisi\u2019s history of brutality because he was the judiciary chief at the time of the 2019 crackdown, having been appointed earlier that year by Khamenei.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Awareness of\u00a0the undemocratic process of election in\u00a0Iran\u00a0helped\u00a0to fuel participation in last month\u2019s electoral boycott, as well as a similar boycott the prior year\u00a0during the sham parliamentary election. In both instances, even Tehran acknowledged that voter turnout was historically low. But in the more recent instance, the\u00a0MEK\u00a0has credibly accused the regime of inflating the relevant statistics to retain some semblance of political legitimacy.\u00a0The MEK\u00a0pointed to the work of around\u00a01,200 journalists as supporting the conclusion that polling places were largely empty on June 18 and that more than 90 percent of eligible voters either stayed home or deliberately cast invalid ballots.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Such a powerful statement is driven by much more than anger at Raisi\u2019s criminal background or at the exclusion of an alternative faction. In fact, the\u00a0message of both electoral boycotts was previously expressed in the slogans associated with the November 2019 uprising and a previous uprising in January 2018. Those mass protests included the explicit condemnation of both the \u201chardline\u201d and the \u201creformist\u201d factions as participants in a power-sharing \u201cgame\u201d that masked the fundamental lack of political representation and civilian rights in\u00a0Iran.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In both 2020 and 2021,\u00a0MEK-affiliated \u201cResistance Units\u201d posted messages in public spaces and held illicit demonstrations instructing all Iranians to \u201cvote for regime change.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Given the reach of that message and the known connections between the MEK and the prior uprisings, it is fair to conclude that the historically low turnout in last month\u2019s election was an overwhelming endorsement of regime change by the Iranian population as a whole. It is absolutely vital that the entire international community pays attention to that message as Tehran gets ready for its presidential transition and the world tries to get a grip on how Iranian affairs may change in this new era.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As\u00a0Mrs.\u00a0Maryam\u00a0Rajavi, the President-elect of NCRI\u00a0underlined\u00a0during\u00a0the Free Iran World Summit\u00a0<\/a>on July 10-12,\u00a0\u201cAs far as the international community is concerned, we ask it to recognize the struggle of the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian people<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to overthrow this regime and recognize these three concepts.<\/span><\/p>\n

We want to bring to justice the mullahs\u2019 supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, his president, Ebrahim Raisi, his Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni\u00a0Ejeii, and others responsible for the\u00a0<\/span>1988 massacre<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on charges of committing crimes against humanity and genocide.<\/span>
\nWe urge the UN Security Council to arrange for the international prosecution of Mullah Raisi and holding him accountable for crimes against humanity and to refuse to accept his presence at the next session of the UN General Assembly.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
