\"Iran-attack-on-wessele\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A week\u00a0ago,\u00a0a tanker was attacked<\/a> off\u00a0the coast of Oman. Meanwhile, the\u00a0Iranian\u00a0regime\u00a0officials continue to deny their involvement, even as more and more international voices weigh in to affirm that all available evidence points to Tehran.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Friday, foreign ministers from the G7 issued a joint statement that underlined the regime in Iran is threatening international peace and security and noted that the July 29 attack constituted a \u201cclear violation of international law.\u201d The statement coincided with the release of an analysis by US Central Command which determined that the tanker in question had been damaged by an explosives-laden drone with defining features of Iranian manufacture.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The UN Security Council discussed the incident behind closed doors in the wake of that report,\u00a0and the British ambassador to that body, Barbara Woodward, specifically identified the drone as a Shahed-136. It was reportedly\u00a0similar to\u00a0those unmanned aerial vehicles that were used in a series of strikes on Saudi oil infrastructure in 2019, which briefly halved the nation\u2019s output. The Iran-backed Yemeni militant group known as the Houthi took responsibility for those attacks, but many experts concluded that the group was incapable of reaching so deep into Saudi territory on its own.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran has been credited with extending the range and power of military capabilities for a variety of regional proxies, particularly in recent years. The G7 statement specifically referenced these proxies and \u201cnon-state armed actors\u201d alongside the regime\u2019s own behavior as the source of major international threats.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe call on Iran to stop all activities inconsistent with relevant U.N. Security Council\u00a0resolutions, and\u00a0call on all parties to play a constructive role in fostering regional stability and peace,\u201d the statement added, albeit without specifying consequences for\u00a0the Iranian regime\u2019s\u00a0failure to comply or clarifying precisely what type of role is expected from which relevant parties.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Sunday, the\u00a0European Union\u2019s\u00a0head of foreign policy,\u00a0Josep\u00a0Borrell,\u00a0effected similar vagueness, writing\u00a0on Twitter that the \u201cEU condemns in the strongest terms the unlawful attack committed on the merchant vessel Mercer Street.\u201d He went on to promise the continuation of intensive diplomacy, but this was met with familiar criticism\u00a0in light of\u00a0the clear escalation that the Mercer Street attack signifies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Two of the\u00a0vessel\u2019s\u00a0crew members \u2013 one British and one Romanian \u2013 were\u00a0killed in the blast, which left a six-foot diameter hole in its pilothouse. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime\u2019s increasing terrorist activities require\u00a0more assertive gestures from the likes of the EU\u00a0and the United States.\u00a0These threats would continue since\u00a0Ebrahim Raisi<\/a>\u00a0became\u00a0the new president of\u00a0the regime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tehran\u2019s malign activities, such as the recent attack on tankers would increase with Raisi as its president, both at home and abroad, and the Mercer Street attack was a precursor to that escalation. However, Saeed Khatibzadeh, the spokesperson for the regime\u2019s Foreign Ministry, specifically pointed to the proximity of the attack to Raisi\u2019s August 5 inauguration in an effort to further the regime\u2019s denials and to claim that the incident was \u201cstage-set\u201d by Iran\u2019s enemies to serve as a false flag.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime used the same excuse once its diplomat-terrorist, Assadollah Assadi,<\/a> and his three accomplices were arrested just before planting a bomb at the Iranian opposition\u2019s rally in France in 2018. Assadi recently was convicted to 20 years in prison on terrorism charges. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, any suggestion that\u00a0western countries, mainly the EU countries\u00a0to foster conflict with Iran is undermined by the fact that the EU and its member states remain outwardly committed to\u00a0the appeasement policy even in the wake of the fatal July 29 incident. Borrell even went so far as to send Enrique Mora, the deputy political director of the European External Action Service, to attend Raisi\u2019s inauguration<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mora traveled to Iran while the\u00a0entire regime\u2019s behavior is worsening and that Raisi\u2019s appointment to the presidency is a blatant expression of the regime\u2019s impunity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the\u00a0massacre of political prisoners in 1988 Raisi played a leading role. The\u00a01988 massacre\u00a0has been described\u00a0by many experts\u00a0as one of the late 20<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0century\u2019s worst crimes against humanity, but Raisi\u2019s presidential inauguration is part of a long history of Iranian officials being rewarded for this and other human rights violations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0European presence at that inauguration provides legitimacy to\u00a0the regime\u2019s\u00a0president who was rejected by\u00a0the vast majority of\u00a0the Iranian people when they sat out the\u00a0tightly-controlled\u00a0June 18\u00a0sham\u00a0election in protests. By legitimizing the criminal president of the mullahs\u2019 regime, Western politicians tacitly that Tehran can continue to wreak havoc inside Iran and across the globe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many\u00a0current and former lawmakers and government officials from a variety of Western nations and a variety of political parties have joined the\u00a0Iranian Resistance\u00a0in\u00a0condemning the\u00a0\u201cappeasement\u201d\u00a0policy\u00a0and being directed toward the illusory goal of promoting \u201cmoderate\u201d Iranian officials who might oversee the internal reform of the clerical regime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ebrahim Raisi represents the direct opposite of this goal, which raises further questions about the value of a Western presence at his inauguration. Raisi has been and most likely will remain the focus of critical statements from Western officials, but these statements, like the statements on Mercer Street, are apparently not backed up by concrete action. Despite the talk by politicians to take a harder stance against the regime\u2019s belligerence, Western states continue to give the regime a free pass for its crimes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
