According to the latest reports from the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK<\/a>), the death toll from coronavirus outbreaks in Iran has now surpassed 400,000.\u00a0<\/span>The MEK maintains an extensive intelligence network inside Iran and has been tracking the effects of Covid-19<\/a>, as well as the regime\u2019s response to the crisis since the pandemic began.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the MEK has revealed the\u00a0regime\u00a0has been\u00a0downplaying the rates of both infection and death, specifically as a means of covering up the impact of its own contributions to those figures \u2013 both intentional and unintentional.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Undoubtedly, the regime officials\u00a0put the population at increased risk soon after the novel coronavirus arrived in Iran from China.\u00a0<\/span>In fact, the regime\u2019s\u00a0Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei deliberately facilitated\u00a0the spread of\u00a0the Covid-19\u00a0in order to\u00a0discourage large-scale gatherings in the wake of two nationwide uprisings.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Khamenei described the coronavirus as a \u201cblessing<\/a>\u201d in remarks to fellow officials. It was the regime\u2019s early embrace of that \u201cblessing\u201d that allowed regime officials to proceed with planned public events in February 2020 commemorating the anniversary of the regime\u2019s founding and mourning the death of Tehran\u2019s top terrorist operative, Qassem Soleimani<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time of those events, no one in Iran\u2019s\u00a0government had acknowledged the risk of coronavirus infection in any Iranian cities or towns. Yet documents that were later obtained by the\u00a0MEK\u00a0indicated that Iran\u2019s National Emergency Organization had already recorded instances of community spread several weeks earlier.\u00a0The regime was concerned about losing out on a valuable source of propaganda in the form of widespread participation in government-managed public events.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
