But can Iranian workers make a decent living from this salary? On April 20, 2020, the secretary of work relations in the Labor Ministry Esmaeil Zarifi Azad said, “In the past 40 years, the salaries of workers have increased by a factor of 900, while the price of gasoline has increased 3,000-fold, bread has become 3,000 times more expensive, the prices of vehicles has increased by a factor of 3,000, the price of housing 6,000, and the prices of coins 10,000.” According to various sources, rampant inflation and skyrocketing prices have pushed the poverty line in Iran above 100 million rials per month, which means workers are at best earning barely a fourth of what they need to make a decent living. But how is the minimum wage declared in Iran? According to article 41 of Iran’s labor law, the minimum salary of workers in different parts of the country and different industries must be adjusted based on the inflation rate declared by the Central Bank and must be enough to provide the needs of a family. But the regime cheats on its own law to put up a façade of conformance with the standards of the International Labor Organization. For instance, the United Nations determines families as having four members, but the regime has reduced the size of families to 2-3 members to reduce minimum wages. The labor law also states that the minimum wage of workers must be determined by the “Supreme Council of Labor.” This council apparently has three sides: the representative of the government, employers, and workers. But in practice, this council serves the government’s needs. What this proves is that the Labor Council is just a show. So who determines the minimum wage? Currently, a large part of Iran’s economy is in the clutches of regime supreme leader Ali Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC). An example is the IRGC’s Khatam al-Anbiya Construction garrison, which according to its former commander “controls 35 percent of gasoline, 20 percent of natural gas, 22 percent of diesel fuel, 32 percent of oil and gas pipelines, and 50 percent of the country’s dams. Khatam employs about 5,000 advisory and construction contractors and has a 200,000-strong workforce. This shows that in reality, Khamenei’s office and the IRGC play the principal role in determining the minimum wage of workers. For instance, in November 2015, about four months before the minimum wage for the 2016 was declared, Javan Online, a news website run by the IRGC, predicted that the minimum wage will be 8.3 million rials. Interestingly, the labor minister declared that exact figure later on. Now let’s compare salaries in Iran with other countries Based on the current exchange rate, the monthly salary of Iranian workers is $106. The minimum monthly salary is $423 in Turkey, $312 in the Republic of Azerbaijan, $749 in Jordan, and $526 in Turkmenistan. This means the salary of Iranian workers is less than a seventh of that of Jordanian workers. This brutal exploitation of the worker class has caused such an economic divide in Iran that on the one hand, employed workers can’t even feed their families while the ruling elite are earning stellar income and don’t know how to spend their money. This is why, according to the Mostaghel newspaper, “In Tehran, there are 14,000 people making their living from collecting garbage, 4,600 of whom are children. There are half-a-million labor children. If they don’t work, their lives will be faced with very deep crises.” On April 12, 2020, Arman Daily reported that 32 million of Iran’s 85-million-strong population are living in city slums. “In Tehran, the population of city slums has increased to 11 million… The density of the impoverished and slum dwellers across the country is a social timebomb that can explode any time and cause social unrest.” What are the prospects for the Iranian society? Given the inflation and skyrocketing prices caused by government corruption, in the next few months, the minimum wage will probably further drop to a fifth of the poverty line. At such a point, the entire society is in crisis mode. The first spark will turn the outrage of the people into an uncontainable explosion, and will turn the coming year into one of uprising, nationwide protests, and the overthrow of the mullahs’ dictatorship. ------------------------------ Music: I Am a Man Who Will Fight for Your Honor by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Source: http://chriszabriskie.com/honor/ Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/">

Jahan-e Sanat explains that for several reasons, Raisi is unable to resolve Iran’s economic crises:  “The inflation continues to rise, and there is no deterrent to stopping prices the growth rate of wages is not commensurate with the growth of rising prices.”

“Getting out of this misery and creating public welfare is only possible through controlling inflation. But we must know that inflation is not the cause itself. Still, the cause of factors such as unemployment, lack of production, negative economic growth and high levels of spending as well as low levels of income,” Jahan-e Sanat explains.

“With zero production rate, we are subconsciously moving towards increasing liquidity, which in turn leads to skyrocketing prices and inflation. Over the past few years, the average annual liquidity growth has been 30%. This means that the country’s financial cycle is not working properly,” Jahan-e Sanat adds.

The regime started rampant banknote printing to compensate for its budget deficit. Thus, Iran’s liquidity rapidly increased, and since it was not per the national production growth, it resulted in inflation and skyrocketing prices.

Yet, the regime’s institutionalized corruption has created and is aggravating the economic crises. While workers and other sectors of Iran’s society suffer from poverty, regime officials receive astronomical salaries.

“The majority of astronomical salaries relate to companies affiliated with insurance and pension funds, which are considered state-owned. For example, three managers of the Secretariat of the Supreme Council of Free and Special Economic Zones receive more than 53 million Tomans. One of these managers, whose (gross) salary was 44 million Tomans in June, has received an extraordinary 7 million and 935 thousand Tomans in one month and another 22 million Tomans bonuses,” ILNA News Agency acknowledged a minor case of corruption in the regime.

So how could anyone expect Raisi and his government could resolve Iran’s economic issues. Raisi was the head of the Astan-e Quds Razavi, a huge financial institution with billions of dollars of assets, and belongs to the regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. This institution is used to fund terrorism.

Besides, many of Raisi’s ministers are known for their corruption cases. For example, Rostam Ghasemi, Raisi’s Roads and Transportation Minister was involved in a major corruption case while serving as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s Oil Minister.

Iran’s economic crises are created and amplified by the regime.
