Last week, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presented a report to the UN General Assembly regarding Iran\u2019s ongoing violations of human rights and unresolved issues relating to past violations. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Saturday,\u00a0Mrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, the president-elect of the\u00a0National Council of Resistance of\u00a0Iran, issued\u00a0a statement which welcomed Guterres\u2019 remarks and reiterated a longstanding call for the international community to hold the regime and its leading officials accountable.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Iranian people and Resistance demand the referral of the dossier on the Iranian regime\u2019s human rights abuses to the UN Security Council,\u201d said\u00a0Mrs.\u00a0Rajavi before adding that the\u00a0Iranian people and their Resistance call for\u00a0\u201cthe prosecution of Ali Khamenei, Ebrahim Raisi,\u00a0Mohseni\u00a0Ejei<\/a>, and other officials responsible for four decades of atrocities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The three named officials are, respectively, the regime\u2019s supreme leader, president, and judiciary chief. Ejei inherited\u00a0his position from Raisi, whom Khamenei appointed to head the judiciary in 2019 and then promoted\u00a0as\u00a0president after Raisi.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Raisi\u2019s promotion to the presidency in the wake of oppressing the major Iran protest in November 2019 was the boldest assertion of impunity, given that Raisi\u2019s participation in this crackdown had only highlighted his prior legacy as one of the lead authors of a massacre of political prisoners in the summer of 1988.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs. Rajavi\u2019s statement highlighted that massacre as a particularly notable grounds for international prosecution, noting that it \u201camounts to a crime against humanity and genocide.\u201d This point had previously been made by scholars of international law and human rights during a conference hosted by the NCRI<\/a> in August, which also featured hundreds of former Iranian political prisoners and survivors of the 1988 massacre.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eric David, a professor at the University of Brussels,\u00a0declared that\u00a0the massacre, \u201cfulfills all the criteria found in article 6C of the statute of the Nuremberg tribunal, up to article 7 of the current statute of the international criminal court,\u201d justifying its label as a crime against humanity. He went on to note that the documents underlying the massacre demonstrate that its victims were primarily targeted for belonging to \u201ca current of Islam that the mullahs’ regime contested.\u201d This religious motive, together with the sheer scale of the killing, is arguably sufficient to have the 1988 massacre<\/a> labeled as an instance of genocide and prosecuted accordingly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over\u00a030,000 people were killed during the massacre, and some eyewitnesses believe that even this is a conservative figure. In one of 16 video testimonials that were published on the NCRI\u2019s website in advance of the conference, the former political prisoner Mahmoud\u00a0Royaei<\/a>\u00a0stated that \u201cin some prisons, there were absolutely no survivors to give their testimonies about the events,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
