The President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, has said in an interview with Egypt Today that the government of Egypt made the right decision to freeze diplomatic relations with Iran, adding that it protected the interests of the whole Middle East region.<\/p>\n
The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI \/ MEK) is part of the NCRI coalition and it was accused by the Iranian authorities of organising the recent protests that swept across the country starting at the end of December last year.<\/p>\n
The protests lasted a number of weeks and they started out as people voicing their discontent about the economic situation in the country. However, the situation quickly changed and protests were replaced by anti-government demonstrations and calls for regime change.<\/p>\n
This was a major blow to the regime and it tried to contain the public anger via its usual methods of suppression, arrests, torture and imprisonment.<\/p>\n
Speaking about the accusations made against the opposition, Mrs. Rajavi said that the recent uprisings are a normal reaction \u2013 one that is to be expected \u2013 when the people are forced to live under a regime like the one ruling Iran.<\/p>\n
She said that there are a number of causes of the widespread discontent, including high levels of unemployment and the lack of access, or affordable access, to many basic amenities. She told Egypt today: \u201cThe country was suffering from a high unemployment rate, which is currently up to 40 percent. About 20 million people live in urban slums, one-third of the Iranians are suffering from the lack of food and water.\u201d<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Mrs. Rajavi pointed out that the political suppression is extremely tight in Iran and people are not allowed to publicly express their thoughts or opinions.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Rajavi also pointed out that the Iranian regime had previously denied that the PMOI had any influence in Iran. The regime has repeatedly tried to dismiss the opposition group as insignificant and without following in the country, but after the recent protests it was unable to maintain this lie. The fact it is now admitting that the PMOI was able to play a role in the protests proves that it is seen as a major threat.<\/p>\n
However, the biggest threat in this whole situation is the Iranian regime. Mrs. Rajavi pointed out: \u201cThe dictatorship of Iran\u2019s current mullah regime destroyed several countries and is still trying to topple others, including Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon. If the current regime doesn\u2019t stop, they will destroy the rest of the Arab and African countries.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Iranian regime is attempting to survive by exporting war and terrorism and it is using the country\u2019s income to do so. This should not be allowed to happen because the people of Iran are suffering from poverty. The people are struggling to afford the most basic of amenities while the government is spending billions on backing wars elsewhere.<\/p>\n
The Iranian regime, if it is not stopped, will pull as many governments as it can into war.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
