Go, it\u2019s the repeating\u202f<\/span>Ashura<\/span><\/i>\u202fof the MEK,\u201d Hossain Farsi testified at Hamid\u00a0Noury\u2019s\u00a0trial on Wednesday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wednesday\u00a0marked the\u00a0fortieth\u00a0session\u00a0<\/span>of\u202fHamid\u00a0Noury\u2019s\u00a0trial<\/span><\/a>, and an Iranian prison official was charged with participation in the\u00a0<\/span>1988 massacre<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of political prisoners. Noury was in\u00a0Gohardasht\u00a0prison at the time of the massacre. In 2019, he was incarcerated in Sweden.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The last\u00a0six\u00a0sessions of\u00a0Noury\u2019s\u00a0trial have been held in Albania. The location of the trial was transferred after 34 sessions in Sweden to Albania per prosecutors\u2019 requests, where there are thousands of members of\u00a0<\/span>the\u202fMujahedin-e Khalq\u202f(MEK).<\/span><\/a>\u00a0The MEK members were the main target of the 1988 massacre of over 30,000 political prisoners across Iran.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On\u00a0Wednesday\u2019s\u00a0session at the District Court of Durres,\u00a0<\/span>Hossain Farsi<\/span><\/a>, a former political prisoner and a MEK member,\u00a0<\/span>shared<\/span><\/a>\u00a0a harrowing account of the regime\u2019s atrocities in prisons.\u00a0Farsi\u00a0spent\u00a0twelve\u00a0years in prison. He is one of the survivors of the 1988 massacre.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

On July 29, 1988,\u00a0<\/span>Farsi<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and other prisoners in\u00a0the section\u00a07 of\u00a0Gohardasht\u00a0were taken to a corridor on the third floor. \u201c<\/span>\u201cThere was a\u202ftable in the hall and the guards were sitting around it. I saw\u202fNasserian\u202f[Mohammad\u202fMoghiseh], Hamid Abbasi [Noury], and three other guards,\u201d Farsi said. \u201cNasserian\u00a0was asking questions and others were just looking. When I approached him, he asked my name and said, \u2018do you demand pardon?\u2019\u00a0I said no. There I saw Abbasi [Noury] and other guards laughing.\u00a0Nasserian\u00a0told me to leave.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe next day, they took us to the first floor through the kitchens staircase. When I got there, several\u202fprisoners were sitting\u202fon the floor blindfolded,\u201d Farsi said.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u201cI couldn\u2019t see anything but the wall. About two hours later, a guard tapped on my shoulder\u202fand said, \u2018Come.\u2019\u202fWhen I got\u202fup,\u202fI saw a door. It was the\u202fdoor to the court assistant\u2019s office. Two guards were standing in front of it with Uzi\u202fguns,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAround noon,\u202fa prisoner\u202fasked me, \u2018Did you go to court?\u2019 and another suddenly told him, \u2018Don\u2019t say court!\u2019 I don\u2019t know who they were,\u201d Farsi said.\u202f\u00a0\u201cI was kept in the hallway until 3 pm when\u00a0Nasserian\u00a0tapped me on the shoulder and said, \u2018<\/span>Get up and come.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was taken to a room. \u201c<\/span>In front of me were two clerics and a plainclothes agent,\u201d Farsi said. \u201cOne of the clerics was [Hossein Ali]\u202fNayyeri. I knew him. On his right was another cleric that I didn\u2019t know. On his left was\u202fMorteza\u202fEshraghi, the prosecutor. I knew him too.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Farsi was taken to what later became known as the \u201cDeath Commissions.\u201d These commissions were tasked to identify the MEK supporters and sentence those who refuse to disavow from the organization\u00a0to death. The \u201cDeath Commissions\u201d implemented a fatwa by the regime\u2019s then-Supreme Leader, Ruhollah Khomeini, who had condemned all MEK members to death.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a paper in front of\u00a0Nayyeri. He asked me to tell my name and\u00a0charge,\u201d Farsi said. \u201cUnfortunately,\u202fI didn\u2019t have the courage of my friends to\u202fdefend my ideals,\u201d he said while running into tears.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey gave me a piece of paper and told me to write some things down. I went out of the room\u202fand wrote it down and\u202fgave the paper to\u202fNasserian.\u201d\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was then taken back to the corridor, which later became known as the \u201cDeath Corridor.\u201d This corridor was where prisoners were held in\u00a0Gohardasht\u00a0before going to the Death Commission or be sent to the gallows.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere I met some other prisoners.\u201d One of the prisoners told\u00a0Farsi that he had witnessed \u201cthis\u00a0morning, they executed 20 prisoners, including the inmates that had been transferred from Mashhad.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEverything fell into place at that moment,\u201d Farsi said. \u201cI told Mojtaba [the other prisoner] they will execute everyone. He asked why? I said the people in the room, one of them was the prosecutor and the other one was\u202fa\u202freligious judge.\u201d\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While in corridor Farsi sees his inmates who had bravely defended the MEK ideals. \u201cI saw one of my friends, Mahmoud\u00a0Meymanat. I asked him, \u2018What did you say in the room?\u2019 he said, \u2018I told them I am the MEK supporter, and\u00a0Nayerri\u00a0told me you should\u2019ve joined your [executed] brother\u00a0years ago, get out of the court.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt around 10 pm, they told the rest of the prisoners to get up\u2014we weren\u2019t more than 20\u2014and took us to the second floor of the building,\u201d Farsi said.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn July 31, Abbasi [Noury] and\u00a0Nasserian\u00a0came to my cell.\u00a0Nasserian\u202fstepped forward and\u202fkicked me and said,\u202f\u2018I\u2019ve recorded everything you\u2019ve said to your mother, including telling her to go to Iraq [where MEK\u202fhad bases], and I\u2019ve put it in your file. You will be executed,\u2019\u201d\u00a0Farsi said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn\u00a0August\u00a0 1, I heard a lot of noises. After a while I realized a prisoner has been brought to my adjacent cell,\u201d Farsi says.\u00a0That prisoner\u00a0told\u00a0Farsi through morse code about the execution of Amir-Mehran Bigham and\u00a0Mosa\u00a0Karim-Khah.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On August 9, Farsi was taken out of his cell and transferred to the Death Corridor. There he sees\u00a0Nasserian\u00a0and Noury take prisoners to the Death Commission and from there to the Death Hall.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat day, I witnessed\u202fNasserian\u202fread names out loud three times,\u201d Farsi said.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe guard took me to the third floor and told me to enter one of the rooms. When I went inside, I saw a guard\u202fwhom we called Tabrizi,\u201d Farsi said. \u201cHe came and started beating me. Two other guards were also beating me from behind.\u202fI was holding my hand in front of my face to avoid the blows. I was on the ground, and they continued to beat me.\u202fThey wanted\u202fme to insult Massoud and Maryam Rajavi. I didn\u2019t comply and they continued to beat me. I don\u2019t know how long the beating continued.\u202fFinally, one of them pulled and threw me into one of the cells.\u201d\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On August 10,\u00a0Nasserian\u00a0comes to Farsi\u2019s cell holding the paper he had written on the first day.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe threatened to execute me and\u202fsaid, \u2018Tell\u202fme\u202fhow you communicated with the MEK in\u202fWard 7 and how did you listen to the\u202f<\/span>Radio\u00a0Mojahed<\/span><\/i>\u202fprogram. We will execute you. We executed your brother in\u00a0Evin\u00a0a few days ago\u202fand left your mother grieving.\u202fShe will grieve over your death too, and your leader Massoud Rajavi will grieve\u202fover all your deaths,\u2019\u201d\u202fFarsi said.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn August 13, I was blindfolded and taken to the Death Corridor. There were many prisoners in that corridor, and many others in the corridor of the courtroom,\u201d Farsi said.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Farsi, around noon\u00a0Noury and two other guards came\u202fand read the names of around 20 people.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he finished\u202freading the names, he laughed and said,\u202f\u2018This\u202fis the\u202f<\/span>Ashura<\/span><\/i>\u202fof the MEK. Go, it\u2019s the repeating\u202f<\/span>Ashura<\/span><\/i>\u202fof the MEK.\u2019 And then he\u202ftook them to the [Death Hall]. The rest of us returned to our cells,\u201d Farsi said.\u00a0<\/span>Ashura\u00a0marks the day on which\u00a0Husayn\u00a0ibn Ali, the grandson of the prophet Muhammad and a member of the Household of Muhammad\u00a0were killed.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Farsi was taken to the Death Commission on August 13.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn that day, they were five people.\u202fThree of them were\u202fNayyeri, [Mostafa]\u202fPourmohammadi,\u202fand\u202fEshraghi. One of them was\u00a0Fatehi, a prosecutor of Karaj, and the other was\u00a0Naderi, another prosecutor from Karaj,\u201d Farsi said.\u202f\u201cThey\u202ftold me you were supposed to write something. I said I already did. They said that there was no paper.\u202fNayyeri\u202ftold me to go and\u202fwrite whatever it was that you were supposed to write\u202fand told\u202fNasserian\u202fto take me away. I went and sat and wrote\u202fit down.\u201d\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was again taken back to the Death Corridor.\u00a0According to Farsi, all prisoners in the corridor \u201ckn<\/span>ew what was going on and what was happening.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Around 10 pm,\u202fNasserian\u202fand Noury came and read out\u202fa list of names\u00a0and took them for execution,\u201d Farsi said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter that, they took me back to the\u202fcell. I stayed there until\u202fearly September,\u201d Farsi said. \u201cThe Marxist prisoners who were in the\u202fadjacent cells were then taken to the Death Commission.\u201d\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
