Nationwide protests in November 2019 rocked Iran. People poured on the streets following the sudden increase in gas prices. In a few hours, their demands became political, with people calling for regime change.\u00a0The\u00a0Iranian regime\u00a0narrowly escaped being toppled\u00a0by brutally killing over 1500 protesters<\/a> and detaining thousands more. Yet,\u00a0the \u201cbitter nightmare\u201d of another uprising by \u201can unknown generation\u201d haunts the regime.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>In a matter of days and<\/strong> sparking a broader crackdown that would see countless activists tortured over a period of several months.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The state-run Sharq daily published an interview with an Iranian sociologist, Dr. Asef Bayat, on November 16, titled \u201cThe protest by an unknown generation,\u201d explaining how the November 2019 uprising differed from previous protests in Iran. An incident that indeed became a turning point in the social conflict between Iranians and the mullahs\u2019 regime. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNovember 2019<\/a> protests sparked with the sudden increase in fuel prices and rapidly spread across the country,\u201d the article\u2019s opening reads. \u201cThe economic indicators had sounded the alarm for months, but the dimensions of these protests were unprecedented since the [1979] revolution.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to\u00a0Asef\u00a0Bayat, the middle-class poor and urban poor class collided. [The middle-poor class] is\u00a0a different social class that we do not know well. It consists\u00a0of educated but poor people, aware of their poverty,\u201d\u00a0Sharq\u00a0wrote.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Asef\u00a0Bayat, \u201cThe November 2019 protests began due to the increase in fuel prices, but in\u00a0fact,\u00a0it\u00a0resulted from\u00a0a series of different economic, social and political dissatisfactions in the country that manifested themselves in this way.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He then compared the November 2019 uprising with protests in 2019 in Lebanon<\/a> that began when the Lebanese government-imposed taxes on WhatsApp, but soon these protests turned political. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
