A former Iranian prison official began speaking in his defense before a Swedish court this past week.\u00a0Hamid Noury\u2019s testimonies<\/a> were a litany of lies. Noury denied undeniable documents about the 1988 massacre,<\/a> called the\u00a0massacre a fabricated story and denied all the facts that even regime\u2019s\u00a0officials\u00a0have\u00a0acknowledged.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0four\u00a0sessions<\/a>, Noury\u00a0blatantly\u00a0denied culpability for the mass execution of political prisoners during the\u00a0summer of 1988 but\u00a0offered no real evidence to contradict the accounts that had been given over approximately 40 previous sessions by former political prisoners who had personal dealings with him at\u00a0Gohardasht\u00a0Prison. Those witnesses recalled seeing Noury leading prisoners to and from the \u201cdeath hall\u201d where they were interrogated over their political affiliations before being sent to gallows in groups of 1<\/a>2 or more. Many also described Noury as enthusiastically participating in the torture and abuse of detainees for years leading up to the massacre.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Formal testimony from these witnesses was given both in Stockholm and in Durres, Albania, to which the proceedings were temporarily relocated in November based on prosecutors\u2019 requests. The change of venue stemmed from the fact that thousands of members of Iran\u2019s leading pro-democracy opposition group, the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization\u00a0(PMOI\/MEK<\/a>), currently reside at a compound that was established in Albania following their relocation from Iraq in 2016. The PMOI\u00a0was\u00a0the prime target of the 1988 massacre after its members were declared guilty of \u201cenmity against God\u201d\u00a0in a fatwa by\u00a0the regime\u2019s founder and first supreme leader, Ruhollah Khomeini.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Khomeini\u2019s\u00a0fatwa in\u00a0his own\u00a0handwriting exists, Noury called<\/a> this fatwa a fabricated story.\u00a0Shortly after Khomeini issued<\/a> his fatwa<\/a>, the so-called \u201cDeath Commissions\u201d were formed across Iran. These commissions identified the MEK supporters and sent them to gallows.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri, then Khomeini\u2019s heir,\u00a0wrote a letter to Khomeini inquiring about the massacre in 1988. In response Khomeini wrote, \u201cUnder Sharia law, the responsibility for issuing the decree in question is mine. So, you do not have to worry. May God rid us all of the evil of the\u00a0Monafeqin\u00a0[PMOI\/MEK].\u201d This letter was published\u00a0in Montazeri\u2019s book. When the prosecutor asked Noury about this letter, Noury called Montazeri a liar and denied the existence of this letter.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the initial decree, Khomeini underlined the necessity to execute\u00a0MEK\u00a0members in his letters to various regime officials. One of those\u00a0officials was Mohammad Yazdi, then the regime\u2019s judiciary chief.\u00a0In his statement\u00a0Yazdi\u00a0emphasized to\u00a0Khomeini that his decree\u00a0\u201chas condemned the entire [MEK] organization, not individuals,\u00a0thus, there is no limit in punishing [the MEK members] for waging war on God.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When one of the defense lawyers asked Noury about Yazdi\u2019s remarks, and whether Noury knows him or considers him a liar too, Noury blatantly said: \u201cNo he is not a liar, you are a liar.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Noury also called\u00a0Khavaran\u00a0gravesite a \u201clie.\u201d\u00a0Khavaran, near Tehran, is one of many\u00a0mass graves\u00a0where the 1988 victims are\u00a0buried.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Noury\u2019s baseless remarks come after a series of shocking testimonies by the MEK\u00a0members during the court sessions in Albania.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from the\u00a0residents of Ashraf 3, supporters of the\u00a0MEK\u00a0span the entire Iranian diaspora. The overwhelming majority\u00a0of the MEK members and supporters\u00a0either survived the 1988 massacre by narrow margins or lost loved ones during it. Many of them have made their voices heard during Noury\u2019s trial by holding gatherings outside of the Stockholm and Durres courts and by speaking directly to the media about the massacre\u2019s legacy and the steps they hope will be taken to bring other perpetrators to justice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At Ashraf 3, around 1,000 former political prisoners took part in a conference that restated the facts of the case and featured intimate personal recollections from some survivors. The event emphasized the importance of\u00a0conviction\u00a0in the Noury case, but also highlighted the need for broader accountability. That same message has been conveyed in\u00a0a number of\u00a0other recent conferences organized by the\u00a0Iranian Resistance, some of them with participation from scholars of human rights and international law.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1988,\u00a0the regime\u2019s president Ebrahim\u00a0Raisi<\/a> served as one of four members of the Tehran death commission. In 2013, one of Raisi\u2019s fellow death commissioners, Mostafa\u00a0Pourmohammadi, was appointed as Minister of Justice. Raisi himself was given leadership of the\u00a0regime\u2019s\u00a0judiciary in 2019 before being promoted to the presidency. These appointments reflect the death commissioners\u2019 lauded status within the regime, and they specifically reflect efforts by the supreme leader to promote the massacre\u2019s legacy through the operation of Iran\u2019s criminal justice system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The praise of human rights abusers is so deeply ingrained in the culture of the Iranian regime that it found clear outlet in Noury\u2019s trial.\u00a0He blatantly\u00a0applauded\u00a0actions taken by Raisi, Khamenei, and other prominent\u00a0criminals. Noury described Raisi as the \u201cpopular president of the Iranian people\u201d\u00a0in spite of the fact that\u00a0regime authorities acknowledged voter turnout in June had been lower than in any previous presidential election.\u00a0That boycott was accompanied by protests that condemned Raisi as \u201cbutcher\u201d and \u201chenchman\u201d of the 1988 massacre.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0popular rejection of Raisi\u2019s presidency represents another reason for the international community to follow up on the Noury trail by pursuing broader accountability for the regime and its officials. However, it remains to be seen whether any relevant authorities will\u00a0actually take\u00a0action toward that end. In any case, Noury\u2019s open praise for\u00a0Raisi\u00a0is a sign that neither he nor the regime will take Western pressure over human rights issues seriously unless it expands to include more than the trial of one low-level participant in Iran\u2019s worst crime against humanity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
