US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told BBC Persia that the Iranian regime\u2019s leaders must decide whether the Iranian people should eat; just days after the Trump administration imposed the \u201charshest sanctions ever\u201d on Iran.<\/p>\n
He was asked how the US would ensure that medicine and food are exempted from the sanctions, as the US already promised to do, and responded that the US would do two things in relation to the sanctions:<\/p>\n
1) Ensure that \u201cthings that are sanctioned don\u2019t happen\u201d<\/p>\n
2) Ensure the \u201cthings that are permitted to happen are permissible, and can in fact happen\u201d.<\/p>\n
However, he advised that while the US would do everything in its power to help the Iranian people to survive during the sanctions that are aimed at changing the Iranian Regime\u2019s malign behaviour, they could not control the Regime\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cThe leadership has to make a decision that they want their people to eat \u2026 That\u2019s the Iranian government\u2019s choice on how to use Iranian wealth. If they choose to squander, if the Iranian leadership chooses to spoil it, if they choose to use it in a way that doesn\u2019t benefit the Iranian people, I\u2019m very confident the Iranian people will take a response that tries to fix that themselves as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
