Tired of decades of corruption and oppression, Iranians toppled the Pahlavi regime. But the spring of democracy and freedom in Iran was short-lived. Ruhollah Khomeini and his ilk hijacked people\u2019s revolution, and the \u201cIslamic Republic\u201d winter started. Now, 43 years later, Khomeini and his disciples have brought Iran<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/economy\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> to total ruin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In his first address to the Iranian people in 1979 at the Behesht-e Zahra cemetery, Khomeini spoke of freedom and democracy and how Muhammad Reza Pahlavi \u201cruined our nation and filled our cemeteries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But he soon showed his true colors and completed Shah\u2019s task of oppressing freedom by imposing a reign of terror. Since 1979, tens of thousands of freedom-loving Iranians have been sent to the gallows. Khomeini prolonged the Iran-Iraq war, leaving millions of dead and dozens of destroyed cities on both sides. Once forced to accept a ceasefire with Iraq, Khomeini ordered the mass execution of political prisoners, primarily members of the Mujahedin-e Khalq (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\/\">MEK<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On the anniversary of the anti-monarchic revolution of the people of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>, I pay tribute to all the trailblazers and leaders of that great revolution. With the overthrow of the Shah\u2019s dictatorship, his true successors, namely Khomeini and Khamenei, took over the helms. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeIran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeIran<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qBTisFHXWS\">pic.twitter.com\/qBTisFHXWS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Maryam Rajavi (@Maryam_Rajavi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Maryam_Rajavi\/status\/1093870073926832128?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 8, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Khomeini\u2019s successors have perpetuated his evil legacy as Iran under the mullahs\u2019 regime is the world\u2019s leading per capita executioner of its own citizens. In November 2019, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/inside-irans-army-of-terror-and-oppression-revolutionary-guards-irgc\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Revolutionary Guards<\/a> (IRGC) gunned down over 1,500 peaceful protesters. By pursuing a criminal policy centered on deception and inaction, the regime sent Iranians to the Covid-19 minefield, killing over half a million citizens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Despite their role in crimes against humanity, regime officials like the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and his president Ebrahim Raisi, who served as a member of Tehran\u2019s \u201cDeath Commission\u201d during the 1988 genocide, enjoy impunity and continue their atrocities. There have been at least 50 executions in 2022 alone, and independent sources confirm at least 365 prisoners were hanged in Iran in 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Upon his arrival, Khomeini promised \u201cFree electricity, water supplies, and free transportation and bus services\u201d and that Iranians will be paid based on the oil revenue. Yet, the ruling theocracy has been squandering people\u2019s wealth on its malign ambitions, such as funding its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wilsoncenter.org\/article\/irans-islamist-proxies\" rel=\"noopener\">terrorist proxy groups<\/a>, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthis, and continuing its clandestine missile and nuclear programs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">According to the state-run Arman daily on December 4, 2021, \u201cIt is estimated that the cost of the nuclear program should be between 1.5 to 2 trillion dollars. It seems that the initial assessment by the Budget and Planning Organization\u2019s expert was not far from reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Besides, the regime\u2019s institutionalized corruption and ineptitude have increased Iran\u2019s wretched economic crisis. On January 3, 2022, Morteza Afghe, one of the regime\u2019s economists, acknowledged that \u201cAccording to the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor, and Social Welfare, about 60 million people are eligible for government support, which means that 60 million people are below the poverty line.\u201d Meanwhile, regime officials and their relatives enjoy luxurious lives. \u201cWe are not just speaking of some officials and their children lavish lives. While the mullahs\u2019 regime is hell-bent on portraying a strong image with a firm grip on power, the realities on the ground tell a completely different story. A look back at the past 12 months sheds light on the deepening conflict between Iranian people and their organized resistance seeking freedom on the one hand, and a weakening regime desperately trying to stay in power on the other. Mass boycott of presidential elections Iran\u2019s sham presidential election, held on June 19, 2021, turned out to be yet another farce and a strategic defeat for the mullahs\u2019 regime that sought to portray the vote as a popular mandate. According to information obtained by the Iranian opposition People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (P.M.O.I\/M.E.K), less than 10 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots, This was the lowest voter turnout in any elections since the 1979 revolution, a fact to which even the regime\u2019s own officials have admitted. A cabinet geared for repression and terror Following the historic boycott of the regime\u2019s sham presidential election, Ebrahim Raisi\u2019s cabinet lineup, consisting of security and military veterans who have been involved in decades of financial corruption, repression, and terrorism, signals a regime gearing up to face a restive population with an iron fist. Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Raisi\u2019s foreign minister, has made no secret of his ties with the regime\u2019s terror apparatus and intention to pursue a terror-focused foreign policy. He vowed to the regime\u2019s MPs to support the \u201cresistance front,\u201d an umbrella term the regime uses to refer to its proxy terrorist groups in the Middle East. Amir Abdollahian also pledged to \u201ccontinue the path\u201d of Qassem Soleimani, the eliminated commander of the Revolutionary Guards (I.R.G.C) Quds Force and the mastermind of the regime\u2019s terror operations. Desperation among the regime\u2019s loyal base Despite their efforts over the past four decades, the mullahs are acknowledging escalating public anger and dissent over their rule.. Millions of people see their non-existent freedoms contrasting with the unearned privileges that the mullahs and their children enjoy. They can easily connect the dots and see the role of the so-called clergy in destroying the country\u2019s economy and culture. Ongoing protests across Iran The Iranian people have also been voicing their hatred toward the mullahs\u2019 regime through expanding protests by all sectors of the society. Amid these developments, the PMOI\/MEK network inside Iran, known as the \u201cResistance Units,\u201d are both expanding and delivering strategic blows to the mullahs\u2019 apparatus. On January 5, Resistance Units torched a statue of Qassem Soleimani, the eliminated commander of the terrorist Quds Force, unveiled on that very same day in the city of Shahrekord in central Iran. On January 27, the regime\u2019s state TV\/radio network suffered severe disruptions across the board, airing footage of Iranian opposition leaders. This continues to raise grave concerns among regime officials to regarding the PMOI\/MEK\u2019s influence inside Iran, especially through their Resistance Units network. This becomes all the more important as protests evolve into more organized movements, bearing the potential of being guided to specifically target the regime and seek fundamental political objectives and regime change. As the regime is using the revolution anniversary to claim public mandate and support, the increasing number of executions paint a different picture. Terrified of protests and uprisings, the clerical regime has accelerated executions to instill an atmosphere of terror. The regime is also emboldened by the appeasement policy of the West, which includes seemingly ceaseless concessions for Tehran to entice it to return to the highly flawed 2015 nuclear deal. Despite the regime\u2019s crackdown and ongoing appeasement from the West, the past 12 months have made crystal clear for the regime the threats to their core from the Iranian people. Khomeini hijacked people\u2019s revolution with the promise of economic prosperity and social justice. He did not deliver on any of them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Considering the atrocities the clerics ruling in Tehran have committed in the last four decades, some question whether Iran was better off during the Shah\u2019s reign. However well-intentioned, these voices are ignorant of what brought about the Iranian revolution and why it turned out the way it did.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">While the Iranian people want to see the ruling theocracy overthrown, they do not want to return to the past, evident in one of the popular chants in different protests in the past three years, \u201cdown with oppressor, whether the Shah or the Leader (Khamenei).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In truth, Khomeini was the rightful <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-36431160\" rel=\"noopener\">heir to the Shah<\/a>. Half of a century of absolute repression under the Pahlavis destroyed any chance of democracy taking shape in Iran. Democratic movements and organizations were decimated by the Shah\u2019s notorious secret police, SAVAK. Thousands of dissidents languished in prisons under torture. So, when the Shah was overthrown, Khomeini and the mullahs stepped into a power vacuum. The crown was replaced with the turban.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\">Needless to say, except for a handful of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1979\/04\/19\/archives\/an-ayatollah-who-must-be-reckoned-with-mahmoud-taleghani-man-in-the.html\" rel=\"noopener\">progressive clerics<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\">,<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\"> whom the security forces persecuted or imprisoned,<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\"> the clerical establishment<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\"> and pro-Khomeini elements<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\">,<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\">which monopolized<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\"> power <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\">in post-revolution Iran, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\">colluded with the Shah\u2019s regime<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\"> and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange BCX0 SCXW68253055\"><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW68253055\">sought to depoliticize the public, especially the younger generation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Now, 43 years after the anti-monarchical revolution, millions of Iranians grapple with poverty and the<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-human-rights\/iran-covid-19-fatalities-surpass-503800\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> Covid-19 pandemic<\/a>. But has the courageous spirit that led to that glorious revolution diminished? The continuing and expanding protests in every corner of the country make it clear that the opposite is the case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As Thomas Jefferson once said, \u201cWhen injustice becomes law, resistance becomes a duty,\u201d and this is precisely the story of the Iranian nation.
