The incoming commander of US Central Command in the Middle East has said that Iran\u2019s malign behaviour has only increased this year.<\/p>\n

Nominee Marine Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie Jr., director of the Joint Staff since August 2017, told lawmakers at his Senate Armed Services Committee\u2019s confirmation hearing on Tuesday that Iran is the Middle East\u2019s \u201cmost significant long- and short-term threat\u201d.<\/p>\n

McKenzie, who is likely to be confirmed before the end of the year, said: \u201cIran\u2019s malign behaviour hasn\u2019t abated since before during or after the nuclear deal in the domains in which I see \u2014 which is their development of ballistic missiles, their activities in Syria and Yemen, and in other [Middle Eastern] nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

When speaking to Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, McKenzie advised<\/a> that US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, otherwise known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and subsequent reimposition of sanctions was putting much-needed pressure on the Iranian Regime, but feared this could be undone by other nations looking to circumvent sanctions.<\/p>\n

One of McKenzie\u2019s key concerns is Tehran\u2019s attempts to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile with \u201csignificant range\u201d potentially utilising research from their space programme, which could be used to carry nuclear warheads. He said that if Iran were allowed to become a nuclear power, it would threaten the US, destabilise the region and \u201clead the worst of all possible outcomes for us, which would be proliferation across the theatre\u201d.<\/p>\n

McKenzie also said that he was confident ballistic missiles fired from Houthi rebels in Yemen at Saudi Arabia were procured with Iranian assistance.<\/p>\n

He advises Iran\u2019s threat would \u201crequire the command to adopt innovative techniques to deter Iran\u201d and, as such, he would advocate against the reduction of CentCom. If the US presence in the region decreased, it would take longer to respond to a threat from Iran, i.e. if the Regime challenged a U.S. naval vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, as they have done many times in the past three years.<\/p>\n

Of course, the truth of the matter is that the Iranian Regime is behind the majority of the problems in the Middle East, from proxy wars to terrorism to a potential nuclear arms race. In order to create peace in the Middle East, the most effective course for the West is to increase pressure on the Iranian Regime and support the Iranian Resistance.
