{"id":257650,"date":"2022-04-09T12:10:45","date_gmt":"2022-04-09T11:10:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/?p=257650"},"modified":"2023-02-04T15:35:04","modified_gmt":"2023-02-04T14:35:04","slug":"could-raisi-fix-irans-battered-economy-with-promises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/ebrahim-raisi\/could-raisi-fix-irans-battered-economy-with-promises\/","title":{"rendered":"Could Raisi Fix Iran\u2019s Battered Economy With Promises?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Since assuming office in a farce in June, Ebrahim Raisi has merely made <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/article\/has-raisi-delivered-on-any-of-his-promises\/\"><em>empty promise<\/em><\/a><em>s instead of revitalizing the tanking economy. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"iran-ebrahim-raisi-promises\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-257651\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/iran-ebrahim-raisi-promises.jpg\" alt=\"iran-ebrahim-raisi-promises\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/iran-ebrahim-raisi-promises.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/iran-ebrahim-raisi-promises-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/iran-ebrahim-raisi-promises-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The last day of the Nowruz celebrations marked the advent of the holy month of Ramadan in Iran.\u00a0 Yet, the Iranian people\u2019s tables remain empty as the country experiences its worst economic crunch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The inflation and prices are skyrocketing, putting more pressure on Iranians, as the regime\u2019s policies cause deepening economic woes through corruption, ineptitude, and recalcitrance, with the latter increasing the country\u2019s international isolation, therefore adding to its deep financial crises.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Some facts, acknowledged by the country\u2019s tightly controlled state media and ministries, albeit engineered and downplayed, shed light on the situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cAccording to the Minister of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare, 14 million people in the country do not have decent jobs; there are about six to seven million informal jobs and two million underemployed, and there are also people who do not have enough income,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mardomsalari.ir\/newsletter\/213340\">the state-run Mardom Salarie daily<\/a> wrote on April 7.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This is in addition to millions of unemployed but educated youths.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The growth of the workforce, parallel to the increase in productivity, are two primary sources of economic growth. Iran, however, is far from economic prosperity as the country is ravaged by poverty rather than an economic boom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In August 2021, for the first time, the regime\u2019s Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor, and Social Welfare officially published a report on the poverty line and the impoverishment in Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cA review of the data shows that the poverty line in 2020 compared to 2019 grew by 38%. The soaring food and housing prices were the most important factors in lowering the poverty line in 2020,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharghdaily.com\/fa\/tiny\/news-842981\">the state-run Sharq daily wrote<\/a> on April 2, quoting the report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Known for his role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/a-political-analysis-of-irans-1988-massacre\/\">1988 massacre<\/a> of 30,000 political prisoners, Ebrahim Raisi tried to pose as the \u201csavior\u201d of Iran\u2019s crippled economy. Hoping that an unscrupulous mass murderer like him, whose main task is preserving a regime that is facing a volatile society, is like asking an arsonist to put out the arson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Bereft of any meaningful plans, Raisi has been only mounting a campaign of making hollow promises, abruptly visiting factories, making irrelevant comments, and issuing ridiculous orders, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/economy\/raisi-to-eradicate-poverty-in-two-weeks-in-iran-but-how\/\">eradicating poverty<\/a> in two weeks!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">His gestures, if nothing, have been a subject of cartoons and disdain, sometimes by state media. The state-run Hamdeli daily mocked Raisi and the regime\u2019s handpicked parliament in an article titled <a href=\"http:\/\/ttps:\/hamdelidaily.ir\/index.php?post=31760\">\u201cpromises did not become food on people\u2019s tables in Ramadan\u201d<\/a> on April 5.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cPoor people are fed up with these empty promises. While each minute of parliament, according to MPs, costs one billion rials, the outcome of these pointless meetings is sharp increases in basic goods prices. In other words, you make people\u2019s memories of being poor bitter,\u201d Hamdeli acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Raisi is unlikely to go down in history as an economic wizard. Other titles, such as the \u201changing judge,\u201d suit him better.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cAlthough the government made many promises to rapidly revitalize and improve the country&#8217;s economic indicators, after seven months, inflation hovers around 40%, the liquidity increased by more than 46%, the unemployment rate is more than 12%, and we have the ever-widening gap between social classes,\u201d the summed up the outcome of Raisi\u2019s government, in an article on April 2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cDespite [officials\u2019] promises about reducing the inflation and liquidity, and increasing economic growth, the facts on the ground, that people see, belie these promises.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime\u2019s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini, was famously quoted as saying, \u201cEconomics is for donkeys.\u201d It is a maxim Raisi has mirrored assiduously, as evidenced by his \u201cto-do\u201d and \u201cspeech therapy\u201d and giving financial problems a lick and a promise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This is what happens when an illiterate murderer becomes president.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">No matter what hat they wear, moderate or hardliner, governments in Iran have never tried to alleviate the country\u2019s financial woes. Their fundamental objective has been to preserve the regime, as their founder, Khomeini, prescribed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Iranian people have heard many promises, from putting the proceeds of Iran\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/article\/if-irans-oil-revenue-increasing-why-is-the-economy-tanking\/\">vast oil wealth<\/a> \u201con people\u2019s tables\u201d or making a great deal of fanfare of \u201csigning a deal with world powers to end economic woes,\u201d or \u201ccombatting corruption.\u201d But they know their suffering has its roots in the regime and its disastrous policies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cMany economic problems are domestic. These problems include corruption, lack of productivity, proper management, and prioritizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/inside-source-reports\/irans-kleptocracy-and-systematic-nepotism\/\">nepotism<\/a> instead of meritocracy,\u201d the state-run Mardom Salarie acknowledged on April 2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Protests by people from all walks of life expand across Iran, representing the broadest display of discontent since the major uprisings in Iran in recent years. These protests, along with the country\u2019s economic crises, have caused a lot of concern among state media and officials, reviving the bitter nightmare of the November 2019 uprising that shook the regime\u2019s foundation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cUnfortunately, society&#8217;s tolerance decreases daily due to the many problems.
