{"id":258347,"date":"2022-04-29T15:50:41","date_gmt":"2022-04-29T14:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/?p=258347"},"modified":"2023-02-04T21:37:11","modified_gmt":"2023-02-04T20:37:11","slug":"iran-mohsen-rezaeis-dismissal-first-cracks-in-khameneis-strategy-to-consolidate-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/economy\/iran-mohsen-rezaeis-dismissal-first-cracks-in-khameneis-strategy-to-consolidate-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Mohsen Rezaei\u2019s Dismissal: First Cracks in Khamenei\u2019s Strategy To Consolidate Power?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"mohsen-rezaei-mohammad-mokhber-e1651241702713\" class=\"wp-image-258348 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mohsen-rezaei-mohammad-mokhber-e1651241702713.jpg\" alt=\"mohsen-rezaei-mohammad-mokhber-e1651241702713\" width=\"1000\" height=\"607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mohsen-rezaei-mohammad-mokhber-e1651241702713.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mohsen-rezaei-mohammad-mokhber-e1651241702713-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mohsen-rezaei-mohammad-mokhber-e1651241702713-768x467.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mohsen-rezaei-mohammad-mokhber-e1651241702713-150x91.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mohsen-rezaei-mohammad-mokhber-e1651241702713-696x423.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">After years of increasing infightings within his regime, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei believed that by appointing Ebrahim Raisi as president and handpicking his government, he could consolidate power and overcome fissures while facing a volatile society. \u00a0But it seems he has found no port in the storm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The recent removal of Mohsen Rezaei, Raisi\u2019s vice president for economic affairs, from the so-called \u201ceconomic and financial commission\u201d has caused a lot of stir in the regime, laying bare Khamenei\u2019s failure in installing a so-called united \u201crevolutionary government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/donya-e-eqtesad.com\/%D8%A8%D8%AE%D8%B4-%D8%B3%D8%A7%DB%8C%D8%AA-%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%86-62\/3860067-%D9%85%D8%AE%D8%A8%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D8%A8%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%BA-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D8%AF-%D8%AD%D8%B0%D9%81-%D9%85%D8%AD%D8%B3%D9%86-%D8%B1%D8%B6%D8%A7%DB%8C%DB%8C-%D8%B5%D9%88%D9%84%D8%AA-%D9%85%D8%B1%D8%AA%D8%B6%D9%88%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%B2-%DA%A9%D9%85%DB%8C%D8%B3%DB%8C%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%AA%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF-%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D8%AA\">The state-run Eghtesad-online reported<\/a> on April 25 that Mohammad Mokhber, Raisi\u2019s first vice president, officially announced the removal of Mohsen Rezaei and Solat Mortazavi from the government\u2019s economic commission. \u201cPer Article 138 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the removal of the Executive and Economic Vice Presidents from the Government&#8217;s Economic Commission,\u201d read Mokhber\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Mokhber\u2019s statement and Rezaei\u2019s removal were widely covered by Iran\u2019s state media and forced regime officials to acknowledge their infightings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cMohsen Rezaei failed again. It seems that the government does not welcome his endeavors to impose his point of view and economic plans,\u201d the state-run Hamdeli daily wrote on April 25. \u201cThe situation has become difficult as more economic problems appear and sanctions continue. Therefore, the Raisi government\u2019s economic team was stacked with conflicting voices and plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThe root of this problem goes back to the beginning of Raisi\u2019s government. When the names of the economic team members were announced, many economists confirmed that this team would not last long,\u201d the state-run Entekhab website wrote on April 24. \u201cThe news leaked that [Mokhber] disagrees with [Rezaei] on how to manage the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Iran has gone through its worst economic meltdown in the past century. The regime\u2019s institutionalized corruption, ineptitude, and mismanagement have indeed destroyed the country\u2019s economic foundations. Tehran\u2019s support of terrorism has also resulted in more international isolation, thus increasing the financial calamity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">While the Iranian regime\u2019s officials are indeed bereft of any solution, they blame each other for the current economic crunch and claim they have the key to open all locks. But this is much ado about nothing. They have a dangerous appetite for devouring more resources and further plundering the people. Their shedding of crocodile tears for the plight of ordinary Iranians is part of a desperate attempt to prevent public anger.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This fact was confirmed by Gholamali Jafarzadeh-Imanabadi, a former Iranian MP, who acknowledged in his interview with the state-run Namehnews on April 28 that Raisi \u201chas very little economic knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cSix candidates of the [sham] presidential election are in Raisi\u2019s government. In other words, this government has six presidents!\u201d Imanabadi added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Imanabadi admitted that \u201cfacts indicate fundamental differences in the government\u2019s economic team.\u201d \u201cThis is a childish excuse that Rezaei himself asked not to participate in the economic commission. Why would the vice president for economic affairs not participate in this commission?\u201d\u00a0 Imanabadi added, rebuking the regime\u2019s claims that Rezaei had voluntarily decided not to attend those meetings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Rezaei and Mokhber, conflicting interests?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It seems that the conflict between Rezaei and Mokhber is more profound than mere economic matters. To understand better, one needs to know about their backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/special-reports\/iran-who-is-mohsen-rezaei-ebrahim-raisis-vice-president-for-economic-affairs\/\">Rezaei was the regime\u2019s<\/a> first IRGC commander and maintained his position as a senior IRGC commander and his liaison with the IRGC\u2019s financial empire. It is worth noting that Rezaei is a war criminal who orchestrated sending hundreds of thousands of children to the Iran-Iraq war front using them as cannon fodders to clear the minefields.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Rezaei was the commander of the regime\u2019s Khatam-ol-Anbiya Construction Headquarters, which dominates Iran\u2019s construction projects. In its charter, the most important goal of the complex is to \u201cefficiently utilize the available construction and economic resources, capacities and talents of the IRGC to continue the Islamic Revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In May 2012, the regime made quite a show of \u201ccombatting corruption\u201d by holding public court sessions of Mahafarid Khosravi. Khosravi was accused of embezzling 30,000 billion rials. But everything went wrong when the defendant revealed that he was in close relation with the regime\u2019s top officials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In part of his defense, Khosravi revealed that Mohsen Rezaei, then Secretary for the Expediency Discernment Council, had met Khosravi in his home in Lavizan, north of Tehran, and his office in Zafar Street. According to Khosravi, Rezaei had asked him to open a firm outside Iran to circumvent the sanctions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Fearing his revelations could endanger the regime\u2019s \u201csecurity,\u201d Khosravi was abruptly executed while the court sessions had not ended.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/iran-raisi-appoints-head-of-the-plundering-cartel-eiko-as-1st-vice-president-and-a-henchman-as-his-chief-of-staff\/\">Mokhber was the head<\/a> of the \u00a0Headquarters for the \u201cExecution of Khomeini\u2019s Order (EIKO),\u201d Khamenei\u2019s major plundering conglomerate, since July 2007. Prior to that, he was the Deputy Director of Commerce and Transportation for the Mostazafan Foundation, another gigantic conglomerate that has plundered the Iranian people\u2019s wealth. He was also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sina Bank and the Deputy Governor of Khuzestan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Rezaei and Mokhber\u2019s recent dispute could only be explained in the context of a conflict of interest. Each wants more share of people\u2019s plundered wealth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cRaisi appoints Mokhber as his Vice President and Rezaei as the Economic Vice President. Rezaei considers himself more competent than Mokhber. Therefore, he should have the final word. But Mokhber has more power and supervises Rezaei. The outcome of their disagreement is the current skyrocketing inflation, prices, and people\u2019s poor livelihood,\u201d Mehdi Ayati, an ex-MP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khabaronline.ir\/news\/1624942\/%D8%AF%D9%88-%D9%81%D8%B1%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AF%D9%87-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%DB%8C%DA%A9-%DA%A9%D8%A7%D8%A8%DB%8C%D9%86%D9%87-%D9%86%D9%85%DB%8C-%DA%AF%D9%86%D8%AC%D9%86%D8%AF-%D9%BE%DB%8C%D8%A7%D9%85-%D8%AD%D8%B0%D9%81-%D9%85%D8%AD%D8%B3%D9%86-%D8%B1%D8%B6%D8%A7%DB%8C%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%B2\">told the state-run Khabaronline on April 24.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Another fact that increases the regime\u2019s infighting is Iran\u2019s restive society. People from all walks of life hold protests across Iran daily. These protests are the broadest display of a society on the verge of explosion. People call out Raisi\u2019s hollow promises, mock his illiteracy, and point out that the root of their problems lies in the regime and its officials. Thus, officials blame each other and try to present their methods as a way out. But the question is: Will they succeed?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThe country\u2019s economic situation is critical, and people\u2019s lives face many challenges. Thus, we should find an immediate solution or see its tough consequences,\u201d\u00a0 Hossain Naghavi Hossaini, former MP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khabaronline.ir\/news\/1620996\/%D9%81%D8%B9%D8%A7%D9%84-%D8%B3%DB%8C%D8%A7%D8%B3%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%B5%D9%88%D9%84%DA%AF%D8%B1%D8%A7-%D9%85%D8%AD%D8%B3%D9%86-%D8%B1%D8%B6%D8%A7%DB%8C%DB%8C-%D9%88-%D9%85%D8%AE%D8%A8%D8%B1-%D9%86%D8%AA%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%B3%D8%AA%D9%86%D8%AF-%D8%AA%DB%8C%D9%85-%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%AA%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF%DB%8C\">told the state-run Khabaronline<\/a> on April 25.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It is safe to say that Khamenei has failed in uniting his regime and implementing his strategy of consolidating power in his moribund regime.
