Almost a week later, Alireza Zakani, Tehran\u2019s mayor, still refuses to allow his employees to turn on their computers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a futile effort to save face, on June 9, the CEO of Tehran Traffic Control Company went even so far as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isna.ir\/news\/1401031812901\" rel=\"noopener\">to deny any<\/a> theft of information from the city\u2019s surveillance cameras, announcing that all the streets of Tehran will be covered live by CCTV.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Resistance Units\u2019 simultaneous operations happened on the eve of the regime\u2019s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini, death anniversary and as Tehran had ratcheted up security measures and mobilized its forces. Thus, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2096551\/middle-east\" rel=\"noopener\">the ceremonies<\/a> in Tehran and other cities were riddled with warnings, indicating the regime\u2019s utter fear of its organized opposition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some regime officials tried to claim control by undermining last Thursday\u2019s attack.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cApparently, Tehran Municipality&#8217;s IT experts achieved success recently. The most serious reason for these successes is that these cyber-attacks were supposed to affect the pivotal ceremony of Imam Khomeini&#8217;s death anniversary and in addition to causing vast and crippling disruptions in the city&#8217;s service systems. But the enemy did not reach its desired conclusion,\u201d the state-run <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farsnews.ir\/news\/14010317000983\" rel=\"noopener\">Fars News agency<\/a>, on June 7.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But this scheme failed, as the Resistance Units published videos of Tehran\u2019s Municipality IT Center, confirming they controlled the site\u2019s CCTVs for 24 hours.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">South of Tehran, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> <br \/>Security cameras installed at the mausoleum of the regime&#39;s first supreme leader, Ruhollah Khomeini, were taken down.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeIran2022?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeIran2022<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QmvtzipSj8\">pic.twitter.com\/QmvtzipSj8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; People&#39;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) (@Mojahedineng) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mojahedineng\/status\/1532374038613438464?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 2, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Acknowledging the power and popularity of the Iranian opposition, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/about-iranian-opposition-pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener\">Mujahedin-e Khalq<\/a> (MEK), is a costly maneuver for the regime. Thus, asides from the failed tactic of projecting the MEK as a fringe and powerless group, the only way mullahs found was the blame game.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It has been years since the regime\u2019s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, has called on regime officials to restrain social media, which Iranians widely use, and the MEK has a noticeable presence on it, keeping connection with its vast network inside Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus, the regime\u2019s parliament decided to restrict the internet using the so-called \u201cInternet protection Bill.\u201d But this bill has become<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/article\/irans-hot-potato-the-internet-protection-bill\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> a hot potato<\/a>, as the MPs refuse to implement it since they fear a serious public backlash. In Iran, over a million users make a living using social media. This issue has caused a significant rift in Khamenei\u2019s so-called \u201cunited and revolutionary\u201d parliament, some fearing the consequences of adopting the internet protection bill, and some call it the only solution to safeguard the regime\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis attack on Tehran\u2019s Municipality is mainly due to its connection to the international network, allowing hackers to breach the system. When such a breach happens, it damages our infrastructure. We should adequately address this issue,\u201d Jalil Rashidi Kouchi, one of the regime\u2019s MPs, said on June 8, as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.entekhab.ir\/fa\/news\/680136\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted by the Entekhab<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite these complaints, the regime has been squandering billions of dollars on its security apparatus. Resistance Units\u2019 operation comes at the time, when <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/national-security\/chinese-surveillance-giant-arms-iran-with-advanced-spy-tech\/\">according to Washington Free Beacon on June 6<\/a> \u201ca Chinese surveillance company is providing Iran with advanced spy technology,\u201d including highly secured CCTVs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Washington Free Beacon quotes IPVM, a security group that tracks the industry, as saying that Tiandy, a China-based manufacturer that specializes in surveillance technology, \u201cis supplying Iran&#8217;s Revolutionary Guard Corps, police, and military while touting itself as an Iran-friendly alternative to other [People&#8217;s Republic of China] manufacturers who do not have direct operations in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This cooperation is part of the Iran-China <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/27\/world\/middleeast\/china-iran-deal.html\" rel=\"noopener\">25-year strategic agreement<\/a> which is potentially worth $400 billion. In a nutshell, the regime has auctioned Iran\u2019s national wealth to China in a bid to have its backing in ongoing talks with world powers over Tehran\u2019s nuclear program and to enhance the regime\u2019s security apparatus as it faces ongoing protests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nevertheless, even by improving its oppressive machine, Tehran is not going anywhere. Despite the regime\u2019s hollow show of power,\u00a0 Resistance Units\u2019 operations and ongoing protests in Iran show a fragile ruling system with many cracks and security breaches.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Following the last week\u2019s operation, many state officials warned that this could have happened because of \u201cdefection\u201d in the regime\u2019s ranks or that the opposition has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tasnimnews.com%2Ffa%2Fnews%2F1401%2F03%2F17%2F2722877%2F%25D8%25AD%25D9%2585%25D9%2584%25D9%2587-%25D8%25B3%25D8%25A7%25DB%258C%25D8%25A8%25D8%25B1%25DB%258C-%25D8%25A8%25D9%2587-%25D8%25B4%25D9%2587%25D8%25B1%25D8%25AF%25D8%25A7%25D8%25B1%25DB%258C-%25D8%25AA%25D9%2587%25D8%25B1%25D8%25A7%25D9%2586-%25D8%25AA%25D9%2588%25D8%25B3%25D8%25B7-%25D9%2585%25D9%2588%25D8%25B3%25D8%25A7%25D8%25AF-%25D9%2588-%25D8%25A8%25D8%25A7-%25D9%2587%25D9%2585%25DA%25A9%25D8%25A7%25D8%25B1%25DB%258C-%25D9%2585%25D9%2586%25D8%25A7%25D9%2581%25D9%2582%25DB%258C%25D9%2586-%25D8%25B5%25D9%2588%25D8%25B1%25D8%25AA-%25DA%25AF%25D8%25B1%25D9%2581%25D8%25AA%25D9%2587-%25D8%25A7%25D8%25B3%25D8%25AA&amp;data=05%7C01%7C%7C19d9a36f741a4a9d656608da4a2e8b9d%7C5cc33869181541469a53b333002f64c5%7C0%7C0%7C637903861002342096%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=eGR%2BFvxkBcBO0a0bE6Qz7MX%2FFPmwUv09ITlKzHtZDWE%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"noopener\">penetrated<\/a> and made use of \u201cthe human element\u201d inside their systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But, one issue is clear: As much as Khamenei increases oppression and his regime\u2019s security measures, he cannot save his regime from people\u2019s anger and the danger of Iran\u2019s organized opposition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On June 3, the Iranian Resistance Units tackled down over 5000 security cameras of Tehran&rsquo;s Municipality.
