For more than four decades, Iran\u2019s theocratic dictatorship has justified its rule in part with a narrative that says it is the only viable option for the governance of an Iranian nation. Tehran has also relied on the claim that there is no significant opposition to its rule. Iran\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence and State media has long sought to dismiss the leading pro-democracy Resistance group, the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK<\/a>), through a widespread demonization<\/a> campaign claiming the MEK lacks support inside Iran.<\/p>\n

But the regime provided ample reason to doubt the sincerity of that claim last year when the regime\u2019s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei selected Ebrahim Raisi<\/a> as the regime\u2019s president.<\/p>\n

Previously, Raisi had been one of the major instruments of the MEK\u2019s<\/a> so-called destruction, serving as one of four officials on the Tehran \u201cdeath commission<\/a>\u201d in 1988, which played the leading role in a massacre<\/a> of 30,000 political prisoners, mostly affiliated to the MEK. Raisi went on to contribute in other ways to the long-term suppression of dissent, and in 2019, as head of the judiciary, he oversaw key aspects of a crackdown on nationwide protests, which killed an additional 1,500 peaceful activists.<\/p>\n
