Today, the United States Department of the Treasury\u2019s Office<\/a> of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated the Iranian regime\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) and its Minister of Intelligence for engaging in cyber-enabled activities against the United States and its allies.<\/p>\n

OFAC’s statement<\/a> reads: “The\u00a0MOIS<\/strong>, under the leadership of\u00a0Esmail Khatib<\/strong>, directs several networks of cyber threat actors involved in cyber espionage and ransomware attacks in support of Iran\u2019s political goals. In addition to conducting malicious cyber activity that affected Albanian government websites, MOIS cyber actors were also responsible for the leaking of documents purported to be from the Albanian government and personal information associated with Albanian residents.”<\/p>\n

Azar Karvandi Musazadeh had been charged with \u201ccollusion and assembly against national security\u201d through collaboration with the opposition\u00a0People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran\u00a0<\/a>(PMOI\/MEK).<\/p>\n

The Revolutionary Court of Tehran\u00a0sentenced<\/a>\u00a0Azar Karvandi Musazadeh, Roghieh Soltani Mirzaei, and Makhsous Bukharaei to 12 years in jail in January 2022.<\/p>\n
