{"id":26411,"date":"2019-07-04T20:55:07","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T19:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/blog\/26411-the-truth-about-political-prisoners-in-iran"},"modified":"2023-01-20T11:01:29","modified_gmt":"2023-01-20T10:01:29","slug":"the-truth-about-political-prisoners-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/blog\/the-truth-about-political-prisoners-in-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"The Truth About Political Prisoners in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"The_Truth_About_Political_Prisoners_in_Iran\" class=\" size-full wp-image-53381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/07\/The_Truth_About_Political_Prisoners_in_Iran.jpg\" alt=\"The Truth About Political Prisoners in Iran\" width=\"800\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/The_Truth_About_Political_Prisoners_in_Iran.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/The_Truth_About_Political_Prisoners_in_Iran-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/The_Truth_About_Political_Prisoners_in_Iran-768x411.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/The_Truth_About_Political_Prisoners_in_Iran-696x372.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On July 1, 2019, Gholam-Hossain Esmaili, spokesperson for the Iranian regime judiciary said in a television interview, \u201cWe don\u2019t have political prisoners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Esmaili called current political prisoners \u201cterrorists who are against the Iranian regime in its entirety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who oppose the Islamic Republic are either terrorists or spies of foreign intelligence services so they are not considered as political prisoners,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ali Motahari, a member of the regime\u2019s Majlis (Parliament) said on Tuesday, July 2, in an interview with the state-run Etemad newspaper, \u201cIn Iran, we have both political opponents and political prisoners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Motahari said the judiciary and security and intelligence institutions use the term of &#8220;security criminal&#8221; for opponents and critics of the regime to classify them as security risks and avoid subjecting them to the rules of political crimes.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time that the Iranian regime&#8217;s judiciary denies the presence of political prisoners in Iran. Previously, in January 2019, the former head of the regime\u2019s judiciary, Sadeq Larijani said, \u201cWhen someone takes an action against [national] security, the action is a crime and should have a different due process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the 1979 revolution, Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the mullahs&#8217; regime, said, &#8220;We won\u2019t have political prisoners.&#8221; Perhaps what he actually meant was that he would purge the country of political prisoners, as he tried to do in the summer of 1988, when he ordered the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, mostly supporters of the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran ( regime because they exercised their human rights. This regime will do anything to survive, therefore it is the duty of the international community to hold this regime to account for its human rights violations.
