Following a series of calls by university students, protests and strikes spread across Iran on December 6. These calls to protest for three days, from December 5 to 7, were made on the anniversary of Iran\u2019s national University Student Day on December 7, honoring the student movement which began during the Shah\u2019s dictatorship.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reports from Iran, tallied by the Iranian opposition, People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization<\/a> of Iran (PMOI\/MEK), indicate an unprecedented nationwide strike by university students, merchants, and shop owners on Monday, Tuesday, and early hours of Wednesday. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the beginning of Iran\u2019s nationwide uprising in September, following the tragic death of a young Kurdish girl accosted by the police, Iran\u2019s university students have been playing a leading role in organizing protests and protecting the democratic nature of what many consider Iran\u2019s democratic revolution by rejecting any form of dictatorship. This became evident when they first chanted, \u201cDown with the oppressor, be it the Shah or the leader.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
